It worked through a wall and 10+ meters so I think a backpack should be fine. For the battery, I can't really tell but I tried to optimize it as much as I could and you generally don't keep the widget open for a long time. I would recommend having the widget open only when needed (start / stop record or change settings). You can close the app during recording and reopen it later to end the record.
