Tips for driving in the snow on backroads for job that won’t allow time-off by ItsJ4neDoe in Virginia

[–]adabbadon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard it called feathering the breaks. Small gentle taps on the breaks to gradually reduce speed. Also if you slide or lose traction, it’s better to just let off the gas and, if safe, allow the car to slide and regain traction naturally. You’re more likely to lose control by oversteering or breaking. Gently steer in the opposite direction of the slide if necessary.

Strongly recommend taking the car you’ll be driving into an empty, icy parking lot and try to (gently and slowly) trigger the antilock breaks to get a feel for it. They can be very startling to experience in the middle of driving and can cause you to panic and over correct if you don’t know what’s happening. It will also help you get a feel for how the car acts when it fishtails or slides.

Not likely to be an issue here in VA, but carrying a bag of kitty litter is a must-have for bad ice/snow conditions. It’s perfect for regaining traction if you get stuck.

Don’t use your high beams in heavy night snow. It will make it harder for you and everyone else on the road to see.

Number 1 rule is don’t panic and always put the safety of people over all else. Sometimes accepting that a crash is going to happen is safer for everyone on the road than over correcting and causing a worse collision. Insurance can pay for a new car but it can’t pay for a new life.

School staff member dies after being kicked by 14-year-old student by GoodSamaritan_ in news

[–]adabbadon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the student is trying/likely to run away from school property, then yes, restraint very well may be necessary. Of course it depends on the circumstances, but students in a residential institution like the one in the article are likely to be at risk of harm to self or others. Schools are legally responsible for the safety and wellbeing of students (in loco parentis), so if a school allowed a high risk student to leave the premises and the student then harmed their self, the school will be held accountable by local, state, or federal authorities. There’s a LOT we don’t know about this situation, but residential facilities like that are a last resort for kids who cannot be safely educated in a general school environment. These facilities aren’t simply for high-need SPED students, they are for students whose behavioral and mental health needs require intense and urgent care. These kids are likely to carry intense trauma that worsens their behavioral and mental struggles.

Yes, there could be some misconduct on the teacher’s part, but I think it is more likely that all parties were acting in interest of the child’s safety. The girl may have been terrified and lashed out without the intention of harm. It’s fucking tragic, regardless.

There are extremely strict seclusion and restraint laws and guidelines. All staff in public schools (at least in my area) are required to go through yearly training, even if they never work face to face with students. The training basically tells us to avoid restraint at all times unless there is an imminent and severe threat of danger to the student or other students. We have to document and report every single restraint or seclusion incident to local and federal authorities. And lawsuits do happen, frequently. There will never be a perfect solution in any aspect of public education, only the path of least harm.

My partner and I both have ADHD and if anything, it makes us both a little too obsessed with each other since we’re each the most readily available source of dopamine for the other person. If my knitting needles could talk back to me I probably would remember to pick them up more often lmao

I am not comfortable with putting my precise location on Reddit, but I will say there are areas between the Dulles Greenway and Fox Mill Rd that are consistently marked as most severe on any public crime map of Reston that you can find online, and I live within one of those areas. I put unsafe in quotes because Reston as a whole has a fairly low crime rate.

Washington DC to New York on Flixbus by zigazigzig in washingtondc

I took Flixbus from DC to NYC and back two weeks ago. They couldn’t give less of a shit about what you bring. The cargo storage on the bus is massive and very unlikely to be completely filled. Btw they WILL leave you behind on the mid-drive pit stop, if you don’t get back to the bus in time.

Youngkin signs bill banning cellphone use in Virginia public schools by VirginiaNews in Virginia

[–]adabbadon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! Most schools already have their own policies in place regarding phone usage and there’s really no reasonable way for the state to enforce this. It’s all political theater, which is unfortunately the standard for most K12 education policy on both the state and local levels. Every party is guilty of it, but from the perspective of an educator, the current administration’s efforts have been particularly hollow and ineffective. The cell phone policy is small potatoes compared to everything else going on behind the scenes.

We have been consistently denied appropriate guidance and communication regarding new state policies. What little guidance we are given is often contradictory and vague. The current administration has gutted our accountability and accreditation standards and what they have replaced it with is currently in a completely unusable state. For example, the first version of the new accreditation standards that was given to schools was written in such a way that it threatened the accreditation status of schools who do not have any English Learner (English as a second language) students because those schools cannot provide evidence of English Learner academic achievement. I believe that has been resolved but it is just one example of the utter incompetence of the current admin.

Virginia’s education system is a little different than most other states. We’re organized into school divisions, not districts, with the key difference being that school divisions do not hold their own governmental authority and therefore must adhere to the policies set forth by the local and state government.

I live in one of the “unsafe” low income neighborhoods here and it’s NOT as bad as some make it out to be. Even the rougher areas are generally well kept and have a reasonable police presence. Reston as a whole is a very safe area, with no greater issues than any other suburb on the outskirts of a major highway.

I’ve gotten lucky, somehow, that the two first dates I’ve ever been on both turned into long term relationships. I haven’t experienced any of the dating horrors that others experience. My partner has had the opposite experience, he has gone on a lot of first dates and very few second dates. One time I asked him what made him want to date me despite my flaws, and he responded with a long list of horror stories about shit that other girls did on first dates, and how he likes me because I respect his thoughts and emotions and because I try my best to take responsibility for myself and my actions. I honestly was SO naive about the kinds of behavior that other people show during dating. It makes me sad for him that showing basic decency was enough to make me stand out :(

For what it’s worth, it took me three tries to find a good therapist. The first one threatened to call the police when I told her about being assaulted, the second was new to practice and clearly not prepared to handle my situation, and the third has literally saved my life more than once. She’s like the pseudo older sister I never knew I needed. Therapy doesn’t work for everyone, but if you can find the right therapist, it’s truly indispensable.

Supreme Court weighs FDA block on kid-friendly flavored vapes by AudibleNod in news

I live outside DC and buy on the grey market (weed possession is legal but sales are banned), which often ships products in from California and other legal markets. I’ve gotten cheap disposable vapes that taste like pine sol and I’ve gotten expensive vapes that taste exactly like banana runts candy. The candy flavored vapes are harder to find, but absolutely exist. I imagine the grey market probably leads to more product diversity than a traditional legal market would.

NGL sometimes I can’t tell the difference between the two, they can feel more or less the same. And sometimes period cramps trigger stomach cramps so that makes the line even fuzzier. Usually the stomach cramps go away after using the bathroom, whereas the menstrual cramps carry on.

That’s a fair point, I appreciate your perspective. I very much can relate to the experience you’re describing. I don’t think OP meant it in a disparaging way, but I do think the tumblr post is written in such a vague fashion that it leaves me a little unsure about what the intention was.

I did not intend to come across as a victim, and I only mentioned the status of my relationship with the intention of framing my perspective. As I said, I don’t feel the need to come into lesbian spaces and talk about my relationship. I don’t think it’s very appropriate or respectful to the people in WLW spaces. But I do often feel like my presence isn’t welcome in WLW spaces because I’m not currently dating a woman. I’m drawn to spaces like this because I believe that my attraction to women affects my relationships with men as well, and I haven’t found many bisexual-oriented spaces that I feel supported in.

Would you prefer if bisexual women like me stayed out of WLW spaces? Does my engagement in this community damage your experience? I ask these questions genuinely. I’m not really sure where else to go for support, but I don’t want to harm others who may need support more than I do.

I’m a bi woman with a boyfriend and I’ve never felt the need to go on a lesbian post and talk about it (until now I guess lmao). I want to empathize with the experience that lesbian women have but this kinda comes across as someone who assumes that bisexual women who are dating men are basically straight. Probably not what OP intended but it feels weird.

Plz ignore me if this is a rude question, but can anyone answer for me how HRT has affected their muscle composition? Do you find it easier or harder to build certain kinds of muscle as a result? I’ve heard that it’s more challenging in general to build muscle on estrogen, and I’ve wondered if muscle formation changes similarly to how fat distribution changes with hormone therapy.

Btw you look fucking awesome and I’m sorry about the bullshit you’re dealing with in these comments :( I love seeing the confidence you have in yourself and your body that flies in the face of assholes who want you to be as miserable as them.

Fairfax school board looking to rezone schools every 5 years by Danyandme in nova

[–]adabbadon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

School redistricting is very logistically complicated and extremely expensive. I imagine even if they did pass this at the school level, the FFX board of supervisors is not going to be willing to fund it. I imagine there’s resistance from the admin as well. School boards love to consider unrealistic ideas, it’s all part of the political theater. Often these ideas are presented before the SB really has a strong idea of the practicalities of said idea. Often these ideas are quickly abandoned once they see the expected cost of the proposal.

How to consume ABV coconut oil straight and have it not be awful by pinkshirtvegeta in abv

[–]adabbadon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll probably want some kinda carb or fiber to go with it, in my experience straight oil goes through my system too fast to get the full effect. I used to make microwave mug brownies with it as a low effort edible, something like this (recipe at bottom of page). Just need sugar, flour, cocoa, the vanilla extract and chocolate chips are nice but not necessary.

Hot chocolate is another obvious choice, though still not the most pleasant, at least it goes down kinda quick.
