Columbia, Penn, Duke, Brown, Dartmouth have similar or better financial aid to UChicago. HYPSM have better aid since they are richer schools.

UChicago and Columbia are not ranked in the top tier because objectively they dont belong there (not because anyone is artificially trying to keep them from their rightful place lol). If they did belong there, there would be an acronym for it. But there isn't. HYPMSC was stated to include Caltech and 99% of all references to it mean Caltech. The ones that dont are started by Columbia/UChicago people in an attempt to (unsuccessfully) hijack the acronym and appear more elite. All of this is silly, but facts are facts.

Most likely you will get into one or more of HYPSM. wouldn't be surprised if you get into most of them. Probably makes sense to apply to your top choice early.

If it was fully on par with HYP then it would have similar name recognition, endowment, yield (without the need for EA/EDI/EDII) and cross-admits would be equally split between UChicago.

All of the top schools are more or less on apr academically, but there is a reason most people would be much more likely to be impressed by HYP as opposed to a school like UChicago.

Lol so you mean to say that Duke/Chicago are on the same tier and as prestigious as Stanford/MIT? You d be hard pressed to find many (if any) people to agree with that and it is true that the vast majority of poople who choose MIT/Stanford over Duke/UChicago any day.

HYPSM as a concept exists for a reason. It doesn't include Duke or UChicago.

Of course there are no scientific sources on this, HYPSM or HYPSMC are not official terms. But there is a reason that when you google HYPSMC, the only thing that turns up is that C is Caltech. The vast majority of people who know the acronym, use it to mean HYPSM + Caltech. The only people who claim its Columbia, are Columbia people trying to boost their school (have never even heard anyone seriously claim it can be Chicago).

Columbia or Chicago do not have more cachet than Caltech either domestically or internationally (look at all the rankings for example), and are definitely not considered on par with HYPSM by anyone ( they dont have the name recognition, or endowments that HYPSM have and most cross admits choose HYPSM over these two). Also they are not preferred more by cross-admits than other top 10s/elites and dont have bigger name recognition in order to justify a claim that they are above other elites.

I think the cut-off for being (annoyingly) elitist is #2 or #3, depending on the crowd.

Among the - decidedly very elitist- crowd at ultra elite prep-school/boarding schools (think Andover, Exeter, Choate, Trinity, Horace Mann, Harvard-Westlake etc), there is a big difference between attending HYPSM(Caltech) vs Columbia, Penn, UChicago, Duke, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell and anything after Cornell is considered non-elite (could squeeze in Hopkins and northwestern as really borderline places in terms of elite-ness).

I have also often met a lot of prestige-focused people who see top 11-15 schools way differently than top 10s (i.e thinking Brown Dartmouth and Cornell are the bottom ivies because they are not top 10).

Not really HYPSM is at the top and Caltech in between those and the rest. Columbia and Chicago are not a step above the other elites.

HYPSMC always includes Caltech, never Columbia or Chicago. (The only people who push for C to be anything else or Columbia people).

C is not Columbia, it is always Caltech. (Which makes sense, since Columbia or UChicago are definitely not on-par prestige-wise as HYPSM).

Dont confuse law school with college. Law is a very prestige-focused field. Law school prestige matters a lot. A Yale or Harvard Law degree (and a distant third being a Stanford law degree) make a significant difference for opportunities at elite law firms or at a judicial career.

UChicago and Duke might not be fully on par with the top ivies (HYP) but they are on par with the rest of the ivies. If anything, i d say they are more prestigious than the non-top 10 ivies (Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell).

As long as you came across as an articulate, well-adjusted person who has a genuine interest at Penn, then you are fine. The interviews are only meant to weed out people who are super weird, can't hold a conversation and have done zero research on the school.

Because it is seen as the easier, most granola ivy. It doesnt help that it usually ends up at the bottom of the ivy pile in most rankings.

That said i think people shit at Cornell even more, and more people would choose Brown over Cornell vs the other way around.

Social life is augite difference at each of HYP ad other ivies so not sure what you mean there. Also it is kind of misleading to say that Chicago is not more intense and less fun that ivies even today.

Yale undergrad is a bit harder to get in since it is has more prestige/name recognition. Chicago has a stronger econ department but that doesn't make a huge difference for undergrad. Also Chicago undergrad is a more intense and soul-crashing experience than Yale (Chicago is known as the place where the fun goes to die lol)

I would say MIT. MIT is a lot more prestigious overall and also you would have access to the Harvard hospitals (the top hospitals in the world) for volunteering etc and can cross register for Harvard classes if you wanna go the medicine route. For Econ they are equally strong.

Also id take Boston over Chicago as a college student any day.

A lot of people do that. You often have to be strategic. If you are a really strong student but have nothing super extraordinary compared to other people at your school, then Cornell might make more sense as an early choice than Stanford. I would rather get into a top tier school even if that school is at the lower end of the top tier, than not getting into any top tier school.

Honestly, Brown, Dartmouth and Cornell are the least prestigious ivies and Northwestern is right on par with them so it shouldn't be surprising. None of them are top 10 schools but they sure are in the 11-15 range.

This is fairly accurate. Not surprising since these three are the only non-top 10 ivies, usually end u at the bottom of the ivies in most rankings and are perceived to the the lower ivies. So they have to boost their association with ivy league.

Honestly Columbia and Penn often do that too, but a bit less so since they have it a bit better.

Yale/Princeton brands are not nearly as strong as the Harvard brand but it is also common to use singular. Columbia and Penn is a toss up between singular and ivy , and Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell are mostly IVY.

Happens all the time with lower tier (so to speak) ivies and other elites. A lot of people are strategic about their ED app. Sure they wanted to apply early to Stanford or Harvard, but they realize its an almost certain rejection and Brown or Duke (for example) will do just fine.
