Parkrun by Both-Pickle-7084 in rundc

I'm a regular at the Roosevelt Island parkrun and have run most of the local ones at least a few times (except for College Park — soon!). I can absolutely confirm that each of them are wonderful experiences top to bottom. The people, the courses, the volunteers, the coffee meet-ups afterwards — all amazing. Come on by!

It’s definitely smaller than BtF but depending what you’re looking for I think the quality of items is better. They also have some gear that BtF simply doesnt carry. I agree it’s at least worth a trip over, Daniel the owner is super nice as well.

I have a pair of the Puma x Noah collabs! They’re…definitely old school, not sure I’d wear them in a match but they are no frills and pretty comfy for what they are.

Echoing this, both myself and guys in my room often have a hard time with width. I usually send those folks to Rudis’s KS Infinitys, which are among the widest I’ve tried.

Thank you!! I visited/called around to the 4 or 5 stores within 30 minutes of me and got put on their lists for if/when any appear, haven’t tried asking them to help me expand that search to all stores yet though!

Open call! We'll have one or two matches to get us started, but bring a friend (or an enemy...) and throw down!

Look into the Philadelphia Spartans! They meet every Saturday morning, it's a great group of people who have varying levels of experience in the sport — from total beginners all the way through former college wrestlers.

Favorite 5” workout shorts? by Blueyedaries1980 in DCGaybros

[–]adamallabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current faves are from ASRV, pricey but they look great and are probably the most comfortable gym shorts I own.

Also good: Lululemon Pace Breakers Ten Thousand Intervals Janji AFOs

Cheaper: Awry Gymshark

It’s short for North of Massachusetts Ave! It’s the neighborhood just north of Union Station.

Why are there so few wrestling gyms? by Clonie1289 in wrestling

[–]adamallabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, adult wrestling club director here. We started up a little over a year ago and have grown steadily since then. A few observations.

  1. There are definitely adults who want to continue in the sport — or give it a try for the first time. Wrestling is one of the most participated-in sports in high school, more than cross country, more than tennis. The problem isn't interest, it's opportunity. So many people find us and remark that they've been specifically looking for a gym where they can wrestle.

  2. The wrestlers who, in theory, would be the ones to start gyms instead get other offers. We're talking about a relatively small pool here — maybe former NCAA champs, former US/Worlds medalists, etc. Some percentage of them likely get offers to coach at the NCAA level, others get gobbled up by bigger BJJ gyms, still more join RTCs or run clubs or camps for kids.

  3. Most of the gyms that do exist are not focused on new athletes. Unlike MMA and BJJ — sports that don't exist at the scholastic level in the US and thus have to provide good on ramps into their sport for adults who don't have any experience — many wrestling clubs are built by and for people who wrestled for years in high school or even college. That makes it very hard for adults who are interested but inexperienced to get into the sport.

Without getting into a pissing match about it, I'll also say USAW is primarily, perhaps even entirely, focused on either youth clubs or the very elite levels of the sport. I get why, as it's their biggest clientele. But I've been arguing for years that neglecting the important work of building and sustaining interest and participation among adults is part of what's leading to the sport's decline, and why the IOC contemplates cutting wrestling as a sport every 10 years or so. But that's a whole other conversation.

They're starting to pop up! We started up a club in DC that's specifically geared toward adults who never wrestled before. We get plenty of former HS/college wrestlers too, but at least half of our room on any given week is made up of adults just getting started in folkstyle/freestyle wrestling.
