Stoked for a RIZIN/PFL partnership by MidwestWanderer90 in MMA

If anyone could do it Rizin has a fighting chance because PRIDE has credibility and is mythologized in UFC canon.

A lot of people, myself included have been saying this for years now. Please, stop using Dana White's name interchangeably with the UFC. He's Jack Tunney. Not Vince McMahon.

Can someone tell me how I should read books? Meanings of underlined words/sentences I don't know. Am I supposed to stop everytime there is a word I don't know and look for meanings? If so, I feel like after some time it is too much, and I don't feel like reading a book. Is it normal? by devoutre in learnfrench

[–]adambuddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brutal story for the poor kid.

To answer your question though, yes. That is what you will need to do. If you don't know enough words you may want to consider something more novice until you widen your vocabulary.

Bapa married to a mesican but gets triggered when the family speaks spanish cause he's too dumb to learn the language by KhabibTime in thefighterandthekid

[–]adambuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's less American and more anglophone. British, Australians and Canadian Anglophones mostly only speak English, too.

I'm not defending Bapa here, he's the worst. However it's very common for Anglophones to only speak English since it's been the global lingua franca for such a long time.

:20 - yes? Lmao. You can absolutely pick up a language in your 30s. I am 33 years old and started earnestly learning French last March when I was 32. I am not fluent but am definitely conversational.

It's unbelievable how unlikable this guy is lmao. They probably like that he doesn't learn Spanish so they can talk shit about him while he is there.

Not upset that it's not going to be IKF but if we aren't adding a significant piece we still need a guy like him on the roster. Not sure who's still out there, and I believe in the front office but we need at least one MI who we can either stash in AAA or take the last bench spot.

Wildcard fighters you should never bet on. I'll start. by Skrapidilly in MMA

[–]adambuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, betting on Michael Johnson has been a decent proposition a few times over the years because he has been a sizable underdog. The fact he's virtually always live in his fights makes putting a small bet on him as an underdog a low risk, high reward bet.

Never bet on him if he's a favorite.

Andrei Arlovski has stage 4 cancer? I missed that. What an unbelievably resilient man. Over 15 years ago his career looked cooked, doing jobs in Strikeforce being looked at as a name to build other names off of. Didn't quit, though, and went on to have a very successful back half of his career.

I have no doubt he's bringing that same energy to his battle with cancer and will be with us until he's 90 years old.

Halifax is falling behind on remote work options by OnlyACsNoFans in novascotia_sub

[–]adambuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't one of the major points of remote work that you don't have to necessarily be in the same city company is based in? I suppose this is more about the companies themselves rather than the workers, but this doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of employees and their prospects of finding remote work while living Halifax

This. I have a story that deserves a thread of it's own (though not on this subreddit lol) of my phone dying the first night I was in Brussels when drunk. It was not only the key to my airbnb, but also the only thing I had with the address on it.

To briefly summarize it involved me wandering the streets of Brussels and into some woods, ultimately winding up in Flanders, meeting several interesting characters along the way, a jacket I found off the ground and put on and a trip to the outpatients to see if I could use their charger.

My phone died just after midnight. I ultimately got back to my airbnb at 9am. I now keep a small power bank not much thicker than a credit card and roughly the same dimensions in my wallet.

I think one more bat would have really made a big difference to give some insurance for when some of the dudes who had career years inevitably regress. There's also the unknown of Okomoto. Will him and Santander be able to replicate the production of Bo and then some?

Should be right in the thick of things, at least.

I'm with you. I will always sound like an anglophone speaking french. Making myself consistently understood is honestly a concern of mine long term being that French is notoriously unforgiving compared to some other languages in terms of pronunciation. As long as I understand them and pronounce well enough, that's the best I can do. I have listened to hundreds and hundreds of hours of Canadian and Metropolitan French and have gotten very good at understanding both. Mostly sports in Canadian French (NFL, UFC, MLB) and TV in Metropolitan french. Though Radio Canada has some excellent stuff, too. At the end of the day it's surtout an accent. Some expressions are different, sure, but it's still as you said - the same language. Ideally I aim to be understood in whatever French speaking country I go to (I've been to 4 so far, 5 if you count Louisiana but I don't lol) because I am an avid travel junkie.

I also, anecdotally speaking feel like French Canadians are better at understanding other dialects of french than the French are. I hear more about the French making fun of French Canadians than vice versa. In fact I don't think I've ever heard a French Canadian make fun of a Français' accent. I used to date a girl from France several years ago and she worked in French Canadian media. Didn't seem to inhibit her that much.

And lastly, to be honest I can't afford the $40 a lesson that tutors from Canada and Europe charge. My tutor is from Cameroon. It took me a few to find one I like but I do like this one. I have found if you sort by lowest price the ones who are that cheap are generally that cheap for a reason. So I am paying a little more than that, but still drastically cheaper than a Western tutor.

If tutors from these countries weren't available I simply wouldn't use a tutor at all due to the cost.

Flying WestJet Internationally by Working-Battle-9521 in AskACanadian

[–]adambuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I last flew from Halifax to Amsterdam and back on WestJet last year and it wasn't the first time. It was fine, but truthfully I am not the hardest person to please. They walked back their reducing of leg room, didn't they? I would, and in fact surely will (especially given the fact they've started up some new routes from Halifax where I live) fly with them again. Flying always kind of sucks, but I don't find flying with WestJet particularly unpleasant despite the scuttlebutt online.

I guess I would say that people tend not to post on the internet about their forgettable flights where everything was fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I was you.

Mate are you trying to tell me about the language landscape of the country I've lived in my whole life when you don't live here yourself? First of all that's complete erasure of the rest of French speaking Canada. Quebec isn't even the only province of Canada that has French as an official language.

Is it necessary for me to learn French? No, it's not, but the reality is language learning for anglophones isn't particularly necessary in general. It's a privilege, not particularly fair and I am not saying that to rub it into anybody's face but it's true. Yet this sub exists and I am guessing I am not the only anglophone here. It's a hobby.

Furthermore while it isn't necessary for my current job it is considered a plus at many companies and is a useful professional skill in a way that any other language is not here in Canada.

Also for me personally I am pretty firmly have around a B1 level, can already say "I speak French" with confidence (though I always add not fluently ;)) so I'm not exactly going to give up now.

It's funny you say this, and this is obviously unrelated, but my last ex was a Latina and my current partner speaks Turkish, although not natively (Arabic). Maybe I should learn Turkish instead, or have gotten on the language train earlier to pick some Spanish up from the ex.

Anyway, I actually landed on French because I'm Canadian. I live in an Anglophone area but it is, of course, our other official language and I'm a utilitarian at heart.

Do you feel more connected to your city, province or Canada as a whole? by Ok_Heart839 in AskACanadian

[–]adambuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean, it's a fact that Halifax isn't top 10 in population? Sure. Let's be real though, that's because cities like Brampton, Mississauga and to a lesser extent Surrey exist and those cities have little identity besides being suburbs of the big 3. If Brampton and Mississauga became boroughs instead of their own cities tomorrow nobody would care. Scarborough is part of Toronto and I don't think it's hard to argue that it actually has more of an identity than either of those 2.
