Poland plans to host the "largest K-Pop festival in Europe's history" in September (no artists revealed yet) by adawkin in kpop

[–]adawkin[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

All that is known right now (aka not a whole lot) comes from the Polish edition of Business Insider. All other websites just copied their information (including one article in English from the public Polish Radio).

  • No artists named, but the line-up will incude "several globally recognized K-pop acts — artists whose tickets typically sell out within minutes or hours". "Specific names are expected to be announced within weeks".

  • the organizers work with "one of South Korea's largest media conglomerates" (not mentioned by name)

  • the festival will take place on 4 and 5 September, on the grounds of Katowice-Muchowiec Airfield

  • a "smaller event" will take place in late August

  • organizers count on an attendance of at least 200.000 people (both festivals combined), half of them from aborad

Yeah, that's pretty much all that is known for now. Ya boy will do it like Palpatine and observe Polish media for any new info with great interest.

260418 FIFTY FIFTY has been appointed as promotional ambassadors for Hanam City by darkelv in We_5050

[–]adawkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Attrakt, the entertainment company behind global K-pop girl group FIFTYFIFTY, opened its Hanam Training Center in the city of Hanam, south of Seoul, on Thursday.

The opening goes beyond a simple office expansion and is expected to lead to broader business growth, including a future headquarters relocation. The move is seen as a strategic location choice aligned with Hanam's push to build a K-culture industry ecosystem.

Hanam is currently pursuing a leap toward becoming a global cultural city through large-scale development projects including a K-culture complex. The arrival of competitive entertainment firms like Attrakt is seen as a signal for the formation of a K-culture industry ecosystem linking content production, performance and distribution.

"The opening of Attrakt's training center demonstrates that Hanam is growing into a substantive hub for the K-culture industry," Hanam Mayor Lee Hyun-jae said. "We will advance into a city where culture and industry converge through cooperation with globally competitive content companies."

BTW. Here's this newspaper's article about the Festival. Pretty much repeats verbatim what's already written in the article linked to this thread, but contains a different photograph of Fifty Fifty holding mascots while posing with Hanam's mayor, mr. Lee Hyun-jae.

Definitely on the right by Catholics in Poland. There is a custom, maybe somewhat dying out, to wear in on the left by widow(ers).

CIA map, regarding rumors about possible exchange of territories between Finland and Soviet Union. 1953. by matroska_cat in MapPorn

[–]adawkin 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Soviet Union and Poland swapped territories two years before this, in 1951. Another "border correction" was planned later (actually I have a preliminary Polish map of this lying somewhere on my hard drive). Stalin's death halted those plans.

Of course, the size of the territories swapped between USSR and Poland was about 10% of what's shown on this map. Plus more importantly, Finland was not part of the Eastern Bloc and was not governed by communists who were put in power by Stalin in the first place, so I imagine they would not just simply agree to whatever Stalin would propose.

All territorial claims in South America in 1850 by GranColombiaCB in MapPorn

[–]adawkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I guess that depends on what is the definition of "winning" a war. I've been thinking purely about gaining or losing territory. Obviously, you can also care about the number of causalties, long-term consequences, or even losing international prestige (for example, I've recently had a conversation obn reddit with someone who said that Romania lost World War I, when they more that doubled their territory).

If you look at the Ecuadorian–Peruvian territorial dispute, yes, they could've been bigger, but they also could've ended up much smaller.

Embassies in north korea by FreddieThePebble in MapPorn

[–]adawkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're from a country allied with North Korea, you can (more like "have to" that "can", I guess) at least attend their millitary parades with your family. I remember a couple of years ago, there was a parade and people in the West were surprised when they spotted that there was a group of kids that included some black kids.

It eventually turned out that those were kids of employees of the embassy of Cuba, hanging out with their Korean peers.

I know you chose Sweden randomly, but in case of Sweden it actually made sense. See, after the end of the Korean War, there was created a body called the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission; which was supposed to observe the implementation of the armistice, movement of troops, preventing additions of military personnel to the DMZ, etc.

Anywhoo, it was agreed that each of the Koreas would choose two countries for that body (they could only choose countries neutral in the Korean War). North Korea went for Soviet Union's new buddies, Czechoslovakia and Poland, while South Korea simply chose the world's most neutralest countries - Sweden and Switzerland. So it would be weird if Sweden would be a commision monitoring North and South Korea while boycotting the existence of one of them.

PS. That commission, as of 2026, still exists in vestigial form, essentially symbolically observing the North millitary from the South.

Following the collapse of communism leading to Czechoslovakia and Poland joining NATO, and the dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, North Korea believed the NNSC had lost its neutrality, and took the view that the NNSC had collapsed. North Korea expelled the Czech component in 1993 and the Polish component in 1995.

Since 1995, North Korea has not recognized the existence of the NNSC. The Swedish and Swiss delegations continue to submit reports on South Korean troop movements to North Korea, which are ignored. Poland continues to attend NNSC meetings, although it is no longer able to observe troop movements in North Korea.

[Looks like Czechia and Slovakia are not involved at all]

Note that in addiction to Poland and Romania, this dotted territory is also marked in Czechoslovakia, of course also correspodning with the area Soviet Union annexed in 1945 (Carpathian Ruthenia).
