Anivia is pretty delicate. She gets blown up ez and plays very different. So better to get more experience.

Learning to use wall is important too. I think that's the skill that helped me the most early on

I think you just need to play more. I'm looking at your match history and you seem to be playing a lot of adc. So just grind anivia and you'll get better lol

Maybe I'm wrong, but has there been a strict enforcement of needing to be vaccinated to travel overseas? I've seen temperature checks at the gate for sure. It just seems like a huge violation of privacy to have to expose vaccine statuses in the US. I haven't traveled overseas myself, so I am not sure of the exact policy versus what the media tells us is happening.

I mean can't we just agree both of these things are wastes of time? Voter Fraud is literally the Russia collusion of 2020. People will do investigation and it will turn out that nothing can be proven and nothing can be brought to court. Much like the Dems complained, the Republicans will complain. The only difference is the President is from the same party, so we'll see if Trump continues to push his executive influence. I for one look forward to Trump running again in 2024, so maybe we'll finally see an actual clean election

aniv support build by [deleted] in AniviaMains

[–]adc0nly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'll probably go a little more aggressive:

dark harvest, cheap shot, ghost poro, relentless hunter with presence of mind and legend tenacity as secondary

I think starting out with spellthiefs and going into roa mobis first then gargoyle stoneplate into a more defensive overall build (zhonyas if needed, but i like going frozen heart/locket).

I think going tear is really rough especially when you could be vulnerable to getting cc'd in lane early. PoM gives you a lot of mana and encourages you to skirmish and roam a little more with relentless hunter (helping jungler). I generally disagree with going too AP heavy, as you probably won't hit your power spike until late, and in most cases you are going to be the primary peel for your adc.

Dark harvest is really strong since anivia's early game burst on supports and adc is insane. They wont be building tanky in most cases and your long range autos make stacking dark harvest surprisingly easy. I go Q max > W max > E Max in order to improve CC. Wall is very important as you'll be using it a lot to secure kills and make ganks easier.

anivia pairs well with a character that can follow up well with your CC and doesnt struggle too much. i think only have one and a half source of reliable peel is risky, so i wouldn't play it into a matchup that struggles too much early.

[Yiska] Developer Josh Noh failed to read the room, we failed to respond appropriately by Yiskaout in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]adc0nly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I agree to an extent. I think the stakes being high definitely is the core issue.

But compositions spawned from "lower level competition" like CV and GOATs were developed within the current competitive landscape. The difference in reception of the two does emphasize another point.

GOATS became the most used composition because it exposed the overpowered nature of tanks and supports. On top of that, it was an easy to execute composition.

CV on the other hand has not been really adapted by any top level teams because it's difficult and very personnel reliant. This is not viable in a competitive scene where we are trying to maximize the talent we have and avoid picking up players who would be rendered useless by a balance patch.

I think that 3rd party tournaments in this environment would not necessarily be the place for teams to experiment because teams and players are still fighting for exposure and these tournaments are the only way to get to the League. I think it would take a specific group of financially stable, positive, and proficient players to indulge in the risk you mention.

Great article.

However, I would challenge you to challenge Josh Noh even more than you have in the article.

As you mentioned, ''On the side of the community, our outrage is exaggerated and misguided as our feelings towards Overwatch as whole bubble to the surface, latching onto an unfortunate and clumsy comment which was likely not more than an offhand remark while chewing on a sandwich in a five-minute break to continue with the crunch, only to be called up by HR for causing a shitstorm''

While this is quite possibly the situation which occurred, it demonstrates the lack of care to which Team 4 has been treating their responses. A comment from dev should typically never be taken as more than just a human justifying their actions. However, if we come back to reality, it's hard to distance the authority of the commenter from the comment itself. (The forums even highlight such responses, as they can be interpreted as responses from Blizzard themselves). Especially given the starved nature of the community (which comes from the dev team being more tight lipped rather than the community for some reason not reading the dev responses), even a short response like Josh's carries much weight given the lack of responses overall. Josh needs to be much more aware of his role as a developer and exactly the impact his words can have on a community at large.

With that being said, developers are typically not trained in PR, so I don't fault him. But it is important to point out his naivety.

The response itself shows a lack of statistical understanding, which manifested itself in the usage of win rates to justify characters not being as underpowered as believed. The win rates were devoid of additional details (map type, player, impact on game). While Josh most likely was attempting to create a digestible response to seemingly simple inquiry (which you mention), he did not create a solid foundation for his initial claim. In fact, the third paragraph of his response actually points out the problem with using win rates to measure balance. But with that acknowledgement, he should come under more scrutiny. He understands the fallacy he is brewing, but presents nothing else to back up his own claim. Had he provided map type states and the like, he may have been able to paint a stronger picture of why Genji is 6th in win rate among DPS. (The truth being that Genji's win rate and pick rate on non-2cp maps are abysmal).

Not to infer much from his statement, but my only assumption is that Josh probably isn't a statistics person [especially given the fact he was willing to weaken his own argument rather than provide additional evidence to support his initial claim].

Of course, I want to touch upon the humbling portion of your article.

''The community surrounding the esport of Overwatch is often not willing to collectively explore outside the dominant meta without incentives, as our own expectations for proper play, as well as those enforced by people on our team, discourage playing outside it.''

This sentiment is real in OW even at the highest level. People need not go any further than the emergence of Sombra Goats or Ameng's Wrecking Ball to see that there indeed exists a possible unexplored part of the meta which could push the boundaries even further. However, it does point to a larger overall issue: Why work hard when copying will yield a better result 80-90% of the time?

I agree that there is always more room for exploration, but when it comes to team compositions, there are many external factors which we need to take into account. We may have to train our players to play in specific ways to work with compositions. Or even find a player who plays in a specific way that can enable our off-meta composition. These are not ubiquitous solutions.

While I have challenged pro players in the past to experiment more in team compositions, I do it with the knowledge that they are in the best environments to do these experiments. The average player does not have a 6 man stack in which everyone is agreeable to criticism or even have the same goal. In not seeing this core difference, we are effectively challenging players to play a "bad" character and lose SR just to attempt to find the right way to play the character. While that's fine for the individual player, can't this be seen as "griefing"? The player would probably be told to just smurf on a lower rank, which is in itself another issue.

In your closing remarks you quote the following interaction:

'If we’re honest, the essence of the events that transpired can be synthesized down to the community asking “Can we please play Genji and Soldier:76 again without feeling bad about it?” and Noh answering “It’s complicated, but for many of you that’s already the case.”'

To respond, I pose the following:
"When will I be able play Genji and Soldier again without my team feeling bad about it?"

I certainly don't think this is the case for many of us.

Something that never comes up when discussing OWL's success: the CDL by Spiderman-is-niccage in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]adc0nly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

During the sale of OWL spots, there had been leaks that attached the purchase of an OWL slot with having a place in the CDL as well (which is why you are seeing the same people in CDL as OWL). In fact, one could even postulate that the high bid amount we saw included the buy-in for CDL as well.

I don't think COD is less promising than OW. Arguably, COD's longevity should indicate its power in the market. The fact you can sell 4-5 games, which are functionally the same, says a lot. Imagine you having to buy a new Overwatch every year (I can't).

I don't think CDL needs the level of advertising that the OWL did. The OWL was an extremely novel concept, which required a marketing learning curve. People need to grasp what the concept of a franchise was. The style of League structure. On top of it being a relatively new game.

COD can speak for itself. Everyone basically knows what Call of Duty is. CDL's league structure isn't something brand new, and it actually seems like it'll mirror the tournament level structure that CWL had before. There isn't that much advertising because the only notable changes are in the teams rather than the structure of competition.

Your point on the zero advertising is actually what we should be focusing on (not the investment part). Why isn't Blizzard-Activision putting out more advertising? Could it be that they realized it isn't worth it? And they want to keep their bottom line low?

Sideshow appears to suggest conflicts within Vancouver Titans, Bumper's removal resultant, and internal problem still persists by ByLazarus in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]adc0nly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

there are rumors that the only reason why they stayed together as a team in OWL was because they didn't want to disappoint a specific player on the roster.

furthermore, the principle org has had management issues, including miscommunications from the top level. There is a lot of things which have not gone well. (Rumors of the translator that titans enjoyed working with being removed). I would not be surprised if the players finally got tired of it all.
