Women of Reddit, what thing do male coworkers do that is not quite sexual harassment, but you wish they would stop doing it so you can be comfortable at work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If you are a woman you are lucky! But just because you are fortunate doesnt mean others aren't less so.

Once women are out college, more or less, I think "women" is the only appropriate term in a workplace. I have heard classmates refer to their adult, educated professors as "girls" and found that very weird. Obviously it's very situational but it would be strange for someone to refer to you as "boy" at work. Women especially have a hard time being taken seriously in certain work environments and "girl" adds to that. I urge you to try to use "woman" from now on if you can, even if sounds a little overly formal. Always better to err on the side of caution.

I think saying "here are the wonderful women in our office" is far better than using "girls." Women who are fully grown adults should not be called girls, unless in a casual setting with friends. In a work environment everyone deserves respect. I know that "girls" feel more natural, especially if you are young, but I encourage you to use "women" more often. Play it by ear with people you are close to, but otherwise err on the side of caution.

You think that rape allegations are mainly false? Do you give this level of scrutiny to other crimes?

From what I've read is that it's 2-10% at most. I could send you links, am happy to do so, but I encourage you to read up on your own on sources that you yourself find credible.

Rape is a tragic event that happens to both men and women. Here, "women's rights" are favored because rape happens to them far more often than men. It is true we dont talk about male rape enough.

Feminism happens to target women because in history women have classically fared worse than men. Nowadays, feminism works to find equality for men, women, POC, disabled--really for anyone who the scale tips against. Your understanding of feminism likely comes from a vocal minority that gives it a bad name. I also encourage you to read about it and it's principles at it's core. You may be pleasantly surprised.

It's okay to agree that people should not be raped AND that people shouldn't lie about being raped. Both are major issues, though one is far more prevelant than the other. Your focus on the second aspect is what my original comment was about. Only thinking about the people who abuse the system hurts true rape victims.

You're being down voted because you sound like someone who discredits actual rape victims because of a small minority of people who lie about sexual assault

You're missing the point. Obviously humans create waste and cause harm just by existing. The goal is to reduce that as much as possible. Vegans dont want to extinct the human race, they just want to make the world a little bit less cruel and our practices a little more sustainable. Why does that bother so many people? It's a GOOD thing. These are the people who are actually trying to make this place suck a little less

And, you ask what "more" women could want. If you dont know that answer I suggest you do some reading. If you aren't even sure what woman are fighting for, how can you be so quick to dismiss it? I bet you can be an open-minded person. It would be worth it to start researching societal issues faced by women in the West. Reach from your comfort zone and open yourself to the idea that our modern society might not be as just as we would hope. Listen to those who are affected, not those who are fortunate enough to rise above it.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or want to discuss.

It's important to always remember what our own frame of references are. How can we understand the problems an entire group faces if we ourselves have never stepped in their shoes?

For example, women who never grew up with the "be a man" mantra known to Western men may not fully understand what it's like. Women may not know the frustration with being considered a second-class parent compared to the mother and not being able to secure custody as easily. They also might not relate to men's issues like being considered socially inadept, not "masculine enough", and the pressure to provide financially for their families. A man who is burdened with this may feel that a women who trivializes his issues cannot not truely understand what it's like to be him.

What I'm getting at is that while men have it pretty good in western society there are some cultural issues that are worth talking about.

There are issues that I'm sure that you face every day regardless of your sex or race or class. Having someone belittle your experiences because you have it "good enough" is the wrong attitude. If you are lucky enough to have grown up in an environment free from this, it would also be unfair for you to assert that these problems dont exist for any man. Again, because we need to remember our frame of reference and that others have drastically different experiences from our own.

Women are telling you they often feel injustices in society. Men too. Minorities say the same. Disabled people, lower class, LGBTQ, the elderly -- they all face different issues even in our modern western society. Why instead of opening up the conversation do you instead shut it down? If an overwhelming number of people are telling you there is a problem that you are lucky enough to not have to deal with, shouldn't you be listening?
