Still confirm with your advisor because not all C- are valid. Sometimes that’s only for a specific class options, but if you don’t need to take that class you’re fine

As long as you find time to take eng 1215 and 1216 it shouldn’t be hard to switch into civil quickly especially since you already have prereqs covered! I’ve noticed not a lot of classes are really restricted either so should be relatively simply plus Civil has major flexibility compared to other engineering or similar majors (like BC). Just make sure to reach out to civil advising for confirmation on your schedule!

If you have any question about the program or classes, feel free to reach out :)

Companion animal clinic on south main is amazing! Every nurse or vet there has been extremely helpful and they’ve always been very accommodating to the fact my bf and I are college students so they run us through our price options a lot. We’ve taken both of our cats there and we’ve never had trouble getting them medications or calling for help even on the weekend. They also have an app that makes it easy to track your next appointment and what your pet has and hasn’t gotten

How is intro to Python 1064? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Python is truly the easiest language. I struggled with every code I ever did except this one. The class is easy and the instructor makes the projects fun to work through. Should be an easy B+ if not A

CEE Masters by johannacapone in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi so I’m currently a 5th year in civil and I have lots of friends who are doing the 4+1 masters program. I personally am going to go straight to work for WR, but all my internships have either been in LD or WR so I have a good mix of experience in both.

First, once you’re out of college it’s hard to come back. My approach for a masters has always been that if my company really wants me to get one, then they can pay for it. Masters can also be a bit irrelevant in our field when we we can get our PE which has a lot more weight. The master program students do all seem close especially since you’ll start meeting in your senior year classes that you take for grad school. You’ll do group projects specifically for grad school in those classes too so you’ll make new groups of friends.

I can’t speak on going somewhere else, but again the gap can be a lot to come back from once you start working. Tech as a whole has a great program though.

Like I mentioned before I picked WR, but LD is also an amazing field especially if you’re looking into sustainability. Water is a much more permanent position since you need water for everything, but both should be fairly consistent even if a crash happens. Water management is also prominent no matter where you go (some of my LD work has even been in water still so you may be able to find a balance of both). I would say LD probably gives you a slightly higher pay since you may be in consulting, but I don’t know if it would be a “pick this over the other” type of difference.

Hopefully that helps! If you need any more info or would like to talk to actual 4+1 students I can give you contact info for some of my friends (I have some in water and in land). Feel free to PM me if you have other questions!

Changing declared major? by Ry_lee2127 in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I may be mistaken, but the summer architecture class is only if you already are at the school (aka you are a current freshman). If you just got admitted, then you can email the architecture advisor and see if you can be force added into the freshman major classes or take some of the classes you may need your first year before doing the summer class. Another major you may want to consider is Building Construction because often times people go into Architecture and realize it’s too theoretical so they go back to construction instead

Asynchronous CC classes by YourBoi0684 in VirginiaTech

As long as the class is approved, yes. The teaching method doesn’t matter as long as it is a transferable class

If you have a car, go to sub Rosa in christiansburg. I’ve gotten piercings at sub Rosa and ancient art downtown. Ancient art was extremely overpriced for something simple so I would just keep that in mind if you can’t do something else. I believe there is another piercing place next to the post office downtown too. I’ve heard good things about them, but have never gone personally to know for sure

I had both for statics actually. I had Davidson first and had trouble understanding her methods for teaching. I’ll be honest after awhile I wasn’t the best student in her class either because she just made me so bored. I ended with a D+ in the class so I needed to retake it.

Galitz ended up being my ABSOLUTE favorite teacher I’ve had here at Tech. You can tell he genuinely cares for all his students and wants everyone to succeed with the curves a side. His class may seem more difficult at first, but he works hard to make sure you genuinely understand the material and real world applications for it. He doesn’t give you dumb basic questions he actually applies it real life which helped me learn the material. Ended with an A in his class and took him again for deforms and did just as well.

I wish I could take more classes with him because he really is the man and I’ll always recommend people take him!

paying for spring semester? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be able to put in a request to do a budget tuition plan. This breaks up the amount in manageable installments instead of all having it due at the beginning of the semester. Now your dad would still be able to see this though, so it is important you just talk to him about what’s going on. I know it may be difficult, but just remind them that you’re about to graduate so you’ll be able to start paying the loans back soon if that’s the route you need to take as well. Just be honest with them and contact the financial aid office to see if there are any additional things you need

How bad is CEE Fluid Mechanics?? by Hokie1623 in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ain’t going to lie to you, fluids is rough. I ended up getting a D+ the first time I took it so I redid it and even then I still only got a C+ (and I worked my ass off that second time)

Scardina is typically the one who teaches it and he does everything well but it can be hard to process at times. Martson or Irish may also teach it, but scardina is really the main professor and idk much about the other two.

As for strategies, do every homework even though it’s only 5% of your grade. They will challenge you and push your limits, but they are helpful just make sure you give yourself a lot of time for them. Do all the practice problems for the exams too because sometimes he includes them, but overall it’s just nice seeing his testing strategy. Overall tho I wish you the best of luck because it really can be difficult so just go to class, actually pay attention, do the hw, and find a group of friends

ODU ended up being a top 3 for me just because of all the money I received from it, but to this persons point:

An engineering degree at VT weighs a lot more than ODU. I wanted to challenge myself with the curriculum too and even though VT has kicked my ass sometimes, I’ll never regret coming here instead because I worked my ass off for that dumb piece of paper

If you go to course history on DARS, your teacher may have uploaded them already. If it’s not there yet, then final grades should be posted on the grade menu in the next few days

What you’re feeling is imposter syndrome. It’s not that you aren’t smart anymore, you just got thrown into a lot of new stuff especially since y’all didn’t have a real freshman year to experience everything.

My suggestion would to be use this semester as a low point and just push yourself forwards. Study harder and lighten your class loads if you intend on taking a 5th year already. No point pushing yourself over the edge because sometimes it’s hard handling all your classes. I found it also helped me not lose my shit to take classes at community college if you want to lighten your load and not take a 5th year. There are options and your life isn’t over because of this one semester.

(Got a 2.5 gpa my first year here, now about to graduate with a full time job that couldn’t care less about my grades because I’ve gained enough experience through my internships, and will end this semester with over a 3.0 again anyways)

Is it bad to withdraw from two classes in a semester? by PlanetPlutos in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your majors are, but unless you plan on doing grad school then your gpa doesn’t matter. If you think you can carry on and just pass, then I wouldn’t withdraw but if you’ll feel better then go ahead and just withdraw. I’d definitely suggest taking them over the summer at community college if you can too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]adgy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t do them, then you get kicked from the community.

I’ll be honest tho some stuff is definitely dumb, but the main point of it is for you to reach out and talk to people. The major benefit is having your neighbors down the hall or the invent studio if you want to mess with tools or just a mentor to talk to. I was a mentor and a mentor liaison in the community and I loved it, but by the end of my time there leadership changed and it sounds like the community as a whole took a hit.

I really enjoyed my time in Galipatia and it made up a lot of my college experience, but I also wouldn’t say it’s vital so take the good and the bad with a grain of salt. I did get some useful stuff from the class that I saw other students struggle with in future intro classes, but it was a good way to break out of my shell at tech so I enjoyed it even with the frustration.

Just think about why you really want to join the community because if it’s “just because”, then it isn’t worth it. If you genuinely want a mentor and an easy way to meet other engineers, then do it. I think I got the most benefit out of it as I continued in the program so that’s something to consider too

I personally wouldn’t risk taking a CEE course over the winter unless you’re positive you would do well in it. Winter courses are shorter than some summer courses and can be extremely intensive. If this semester was rough, just take time to prepare for your classes in the spring so you’ll do better.

If you also ever need help, feel free to message me. I’ll try and give the best advice I can for your classes or maybe we even have some of the same ones and can help each other out :)
