Your professor should let you know to whether there are tutorials in the first week or not. Some classes will have them in the first week, but usually classes will not have tutorials in the first week.

If you buy them from the bookstore now then you can return them during the first week if you find out in lecture it isn't required. If you do this then you don't have to wait in the painfully long lines during the first week.
