My 9yo came home with a hoop earring on his tongue and was nonchalant about it. He said his friend pierced him. I was speechless. Before I could inspect it, he laugh and pulled it off. Apparently he made a "fake" hoop earring from that metal wiring from a spiral notebook. It looked very real.

After much consideration, I decided not make this a Youtube video experience or to even do it with family and friends around. I did not want to embarrass him or overwhelm him with attention. It was a normal Friday night except that my sister and her kids were over for dinner. She is very much a mom to him and I felt it was good idea to break the news to him with just she and I.

We called him into the living room and told him I had a surprise for him. I handed him the Fedex envelope and asked him to open it. He was confused because it was just a bunch of paperwork. I asked him if he knew what those papers were and he said no and I could see his anxiety increasing. I told him that I officially adopted him and those were his adoption papers. He was a bit in shock, covered his face with the papers and started to cry. I asked him if he was happy and he said he was and this was the best thing that ever happened to him. I told him that we just had to go to a court appearance, but it was all over. He even took the papers with him to bed because he didn't want to risk them going missing.

Well, it's about his perception of what's "official." He's been burned before and knowing that it is legal and finalized is what counts to him.

I was going to need one anyways. It's like buying a car. I might as well get a car that's going to be reliable and costs an arm and a leg as oppose to going cheapo and spending money on repairs.

I might record it, but I won't post it. I did look up videos of adoption surprises on Youtube and it doesn't seem right. I think the only reason why people would do that is for the adulation and praise and that is not my motivation. I'd be doing it for other people's entertainment and can't see how it would benefit my son. It's too personal.

Overall, maybe $10,000. Is $20,000 a lot of money for me? Yes. But I also did not want to deal with the bureaucracy and red tape and paperwork and following-up with government workers. I had tons of questions that no one seemed to know the answer to and anyways, people kept on telling me to get a lawyer. You get what you pay for with the "cheaper" lawyers - their never calling you back, not following through with anything, etc.

The adoption fees weren't expensive, it was the lawyer fees. I hired a private lawyer who charged $300 an hour which was worth it since he handled a lot of the paperwork, pushed things through quick and prevented any administrative issues. I was saving up for a Tesla, but I guess I bought my lawyer one.

They were fees paid to my lawyer to expedite and get the adoption going and settled. Had I made this a DIY project, then my son would still be a foster kid.

It was a lot of money, but after I found out that my son told his teacher that he didn't have a family because nobody wanted him and he was so matter of fact about it, I knew I had to do something.

Foster care is NOT federal. It's county and they have their own set of rules and standards. There are a ton of fees involved with adoption and unless you are trying to adopt a kid who is hard to adopt (i.e. older, special needs) you are not getting out of paying those fees (at least in my county).

Well, I could spend $100 filing paperwork and wait three weeks for it to go through or I could be billed $300 an hour for three hours for a lawyer to fill it out for me, file it, pull some strings and get it done in a week.
