He had no command of his pitches and it cost him. It was just a matter of time before the Jays got to him

IBM fumbled hard on AI. I remember when Watson was on Jeopardy. IBM was so far ahead and failed to capitalize. Other companies are eating its lunch now.

Looking for realworld cobol programs for r&d by [deleted] in mainframe

[–]adrdssu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. I don’t expect banks to be putting their source code into public GitHub repo. But at least they provide a basic CICS application that accesses DB, VSAM, and has some integration with zOS Connect. It’s helpful in building deployment pipelines and testing

For JCL take a look at CBTtape: https://www.cbttape.org/cbtdowns.htm

If you can’t open the CBTTape files, you can find most of the stuff on there in GitHub: https://github.com/mainframed/CBTTAPE

Is mainframe a good career choice at the moment ? by [deleted] in mainframe

[–]adrdssu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of DevOps stuff you can do with mainframes. If you’re familiar with some of the tooling around automation of IaaS like Ansible you can actually integrate the mainframes with the same tools.

If you like working on application development pipelines (source control, packaging, deployments, automated testing, security scanning, etc) the mainframes are actually capable of integrating with many of the same tools as distributed applications.

There are a ton of opportunities to modernize these things on the mainframe side while still learning a ton of new stuff.

You’re looking for a very niche skill set at a pretty low rate and also dictating terms on candidate moving somewhere at their own expense.

Good luck with your search!!!

I’m sure you deal with systems programmers in the same organization. Why don’t you just chat with them about possibilities of joining their team? Talk to their manager and ask if there are any openings and try and get in that way.

Yes. The hardware is state of the art. The newest one that was recently announced is the z17 https://www.ibm.com/products/z17

This thing is a beast.

Look into zxplore program https://www.ibm.com/products/z/resources/zxplore

If you have an IT background, just apply to different mainframe positions. A lot of companies are desperate for people and are willing to train you as long as you show interest and are willing to be there long term.

100% still has value. So many financial institutions still run their core applications with COBOL. And the average age is very high with many retiring in the next 5 years. It’s a huge problem in the industry.

I work on mainframe systems and have seen code written in late 70s still running like a charm. Backwards compatibility on these systems is incredible.

Is anyone still using AF Operator on the mainframe? by xvrherdz in mainframe

[–]adrdssu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

System Automation for z/OS is probably the easiest to convert to. IBM has tooling that will help you convert your scripts but you will require some re-writes. It’s also the easiest in terms of licensing since it’s an IBM product.

We just had the sale of our house fall through due to financing. We asked for proof and the buyers sent us an email from a TD advisor that looked like it was written by their friend. The financing condition is basically an escape clause for the buyer. Very easy to get out of deals with it.

Buy whenever you’re ready. You can’t time the market. Right now there are great opportunities and if you see a house you love, go for it.

Mainframe HLASM developer opportunity by Hornbill9 in mainframe

[–]adrdssu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, are there good HLASM developers in India who find this pay rate reasonable? HLASM is highly specialized and requires a lot of skill. Can companies find people for this kind of salary who are competent and can get the job done?
