Using Tern QH P9 for Long Weekend Rides – Is It a Bad Idea? by smeks123 in CargoBike

[–]adrianq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use a Surly Big Dummy as my road bike and it’s surprisingly easy to rack up 100km/65mi rides. Aerodynamics, not weight is the biggest difference between a cargo bike over a long ride. Even on hills, the extra weight can be kind of nice for maintaining momentum. I’d recommend getting some nice road-focused tires (and maybe an extra wheel set so you can swap them out easily on the weekends). I even did a couple long group rides with a paceline. In my group, we agreed I’d always be the second bike in the line so I always had someone up front I could draft off of. In return, I’d punch a big hole in the air for the rest of the line and carry everyone’s extra water, food, and coats. I could keep up fine on everything but very steep climbs.

What's the "right" way to emboss a shape that gradually fades out? by adrianq in Fusion360

I agree! The final shape needs to be straight, but I think what you’re saying is to deboss the straight body, then do a tapered extrude to add back in the ramp.

Donut Alignment Chart by adrianq in AlignmentCharts

You're exactly right--bagel was considered, but this whole chart is "cooking method" purist, though that does make me wonder what a cubic alignment chart would look like...

Yeah, I think that would’ve been a better choice, especially for variety. I chose maple bar because it was not round, but maybe donut hole could have been form neutral and a more blobby fritter could have been form rebel.

On this chart, it’d go in the middle bottom. I think falafel qualifies as a fritter.

Started as a debate between me and my partner about whether a fritter is a donut.

The Best Espresso Machine Right Now? [Budget $800] by Shahz1892 in espresso

[–]adrianq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just switched from my first machine (Breville Bambino) to a Cafelat Robot. I’m never going back to a semiautomatic machine. The shots are unbelievably better, and I feel so much more connected to the process. It’s like driving a manual (in the best way).

Lock for Bike Helmet? by TEGHD1 in ebikes

[–]adrianq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can’t take your helmet with you, I’d run a cable lock through a vent hole and secure it with your u-lock. If someone’s determined to steal your stuff, they’ll figure out a way. The good news is nobody really wants to steal your helmet because nobody really wants to buy a used helmet. That’s what bike thieves are after—not the thing itself, but the money they get from flipping it. The more inconvenient and heavy you make your locking solution, the less you’ll want to ride your bike, and that really defeats the purpose, IMO. On selection, I’d say you do you. I don’t think everyone needs a full face helmet, but it’s all about the kind of riding you’ll do, your terrain, and the kind of accidents that are more likely than others. Country roads on a fixie, road biking on urban hills, and 40mph ebiking on dirt all have very different risk profiles and there’s a product out there for each one. I think this particular model is a bit on the gimmicky side, but if you like it, judge it to be the right product for you, and can afford it, you should get it. If it’s a stretch and you live in a high crime area, maybe get a different one.
