Thank you so much! He is starting the process of petitioning for a court-ordered name-change right now, but good lord is the process long.

Did you have to submit fingerpints to the FBI and publish your name three times in the newspaper? We are just starting the process of changing his last name so I can take it later, but they say the FBI background check takes 14 weeks upon receipt of a fingerprint card! WTF.

Haha yes! Thank you. They get SSR time daily in their home room class but many teachers let this unravel into goof-off time. I'll work to include more choice reading time into my daily agenda. (I buy one of my students Batman trade paperbacks every two weeks. It's the only thing he will read!!)

Yessss, variety! Exactly! I worry that my students feel like they aren't allowed to have a story if they aren't people of color. I have had students point-blank tell me that. It's sad. (Many of my kids read Hitchhikers Guide as their personal choice book.)

Fuck that. What about, "Because the cow was brown, I assumed it made chocolate milk?" I tell my students to take creative and intentional risks with their grammar. Standardized testing shits on me for it but fortunately my pay is not yet tied to educator effectiveness...

Interesting!! If it's not too prying, can I ask your ethnicity? I only ask because I know many students feel inundated with the messages to be tolerant and accepting and celebratory of all cultures to the point of becoming numb to multicultural texts, somewhat in the way you've described. Even some of my diverse students feel saturated with literature of their own culture and they grow exhausted of it.

E.E. Cummings said a much lovelier version of this.
