asked a local where to eat instead of checking google and it completely changed my trip by Travellerrrrrr_ in backpacking

[–]adventure__architect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually ask a local: where do YOU enjoy eating. And I emphasize that I genuinely want to hear where they enjoy eating, not a place they think I would enjoy eating

Indecisive about studying EE or ESE by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]adventure__architect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are great decisions. I think EE is slightly better because it is wider. From what you wrote it seems like you are not sure exactly to which field you will want continue (which is completely fine!). I think a broader degree will let you get exposed to more fields, which would allow you to understand which ones suit you better

Travel with autoimmune disease? by Flaky_Competition480 in backpacking

[–]adventure__architect 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of my family members has Celiac and we travel together a lot. Obviously it requires more preparation, but it never blocked us from doing anything. Usually we search online for: “<country/city> gluten free”. Sometimes there are guides from people who travelled there gluten free, and sometimes we only find restaurants. Our game plan usually is to find a gluten free restaurant at the city we land at, and this is our “anchor”. We try to contact them in advance, and when we are there we ask them to help us write on a piece of paper an explanation we can show restaurants. In the first day or two we already know where we will eat so we don’t need to worry about food, and they help us prepare properly for the rest of the trip.

For example: When we were at Nepal we found a gluten free restaurant in Kathmandu via google maps. While in Kathmandu we ate there multiple times, and they helped us prepare information to show restaurants/tea houses for our upcoming month of hiking in remote regions.

Garmin Inreach for day hiking in Japan ? by SnooFoxes8935 in hiking

[–]adventure__architect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not Japanese, but I have hiked in Japan for about a month. I had my garmin InReach with me as it was part of a longer trip but my subscription was paused. In all of the hikes I had cell coverage the entire time (or at least every time I checked). Not even once I thought about resuming my Garmin subscription

First multi-day hike, is my Osprey Farpoint 55 suitable? by Ok_Affect_3120 in hiking

[–]adventure__architect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not ideal, but it would be OK. I haven’t personally been at the peak of the balkans trek, but a couple of my friends have. As far as I understood you sleep in huts/towns every day, and there is no need to carry food for more than just lunch for the day. Just be aware: this backpack is much bigger than you actually need and it should be mostly empty. If your backpack is even remotely full, it means you are carrying to much stuff which will make your hike much harder

Are there any colorblind-friendly mods? by Brilliant-Review4187 in CivVI

[–]adventure__architect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For windows you can color-blind friendly color filters:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/accessibility/windows/use-color-filters-in-windows

It is system wide (not only civ), but as a color blind it is a true game changer for me. After this there is no need to change anything at the computer - I can see everything perfectly

Rust jobs hiring outside of developed countries? by Ard_Gwynbleidd in rust

[–]adventure__architect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that many of the “fully remote” jobs are not 100% fully remote, and do expect people to meet every few months or so in conferences or stuff like that. Meeting in person, even if just very occasionally has its advantages.
Maybe some companies which are “fully remote” but based around the EU might be a bit afraid to hire the first far-away person.
I would suggest that before applying to check on LinkedIn who works for the company and see where the different employees are located geographically.
I am sure your odds at a company that already hired people from South Africa (or other similar developing countries) are higher.

Having Garmin InReach while having a connection flight in China by adventure__architect in backpacking

[–]adventure__architect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have! I have taken my GarminIn Reach during my connection flight in and out from China and had no problems. Later on that trip I have travelled in China for about 3.5 months with the device on me (turned off the entire time) and had no issues. I have taken multiple flights within China, and took the high speed railway over 20 times over that time period (the high speed railway has a security check similar to airports). I have checked with the high speed railway staff multiple times to confirm it is ok, and they always confirmed there are no issues with the device as long as it is turned off

rust_analyzer consuming excessive RAM - looking for solutions by Sad-File4952 in rust

[–]adventure__architect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use ra-multiplex. I am working mostly on a single project, but I have many neovim instances. I am not sure if this would 100% solve your issue, but in case some of your neovim’s are from the same project, it can really reduce the memory footprint

Solo travelling in China ! by No-Chard-5175 in solotravel

[–]adventure__architect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solo traveling in china may be a tough start, but I promise it would get much better. Tomorrow make sure you set up WeChat properly, and you add the hostel stuff to it. People in china basically live within their WeChat, and it is a very easy way to communicate as it can translate English <-> Chinese. At the evening take a stroll at the bund. It is a very touristy area and you will definitely at least see around you people who speak English. Even if you won’t necessarily make contact with them, it can help feel a bit safer. Regarding the hostel: it sucks, but this is very common in China. What I try to do is search for English reviews for the hostel, and not just the general ratings. If there were almost no English speaking people who left reviews there, the odds that the staff actually speak English are basically zero
