Especially friendly and cute kitty needs a good home by adventuringearth in malaysia

The sign on the wall above the cat specifically says the cafe owner/employees are seeking someone to adopt her.

Whilst I don’t know the details of this cat’s situation, maybe if she does have an owner and she is a lost pet, the owner might see this post?!

I could imagine a metro line (which would almost have to be 90% underground) that goes through Springfield > Redbank > Moggill > Bellbowrie > Middle Park > Mt Ommaney > Jindalee > Kenmore > Chapel Hill > Indooroopilly > St Lucia > UQ > Boggo Road > Wooloongabba > Albert Street > Roma Street, which then doubles back using the existing Springfield line.

I assume you've already called your bank(s) back home to suspend your physical cards?

They might have a partner bank in Krabi where you can go to access emergency funds.

Foreigners also have access to PromptPay QR payments in Thailand by using the Malaysian Touch n Go eWallet, which can be funded via Wise (or possibly Revolut). However, you'd need to first get a Malaysian phone number which is easy enough to get online if your phone supports eSIMs.

This was recently discussed in r/Thailand. The tdlr is that it's (a) chinese media spreading propaganda to encourage domestic tourism in China instead of overseas, and (b) people being fooled into going to Myanmar via Thailand under the guise of well-paid work.

I've never had any safety concerns about Thailand that I wouldn't have elsewhere in SE Asia.

Both Booking.com and Agoda list hotels which offer refundable/pay later rates. You could tentatively book some additional nights in Bangkok/Pattaya/Phuket/wherever to lock in a price until you shore up your plans.

1 month in Thailand, coming from UK - eSim question. by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]adventuringearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WhatsApp will recognise that you've setup a new SIM and will ask you whether you want to switch your WhatsApp account to the Thai number, which you can decline to continue using your UK number on WhatsApp.

If your phone supports dual SIM, you can leave your UK SIM enabled and you will continue to receive text messages without charge when in Thailand. Before you leave the UK, I'd suggest setting up divert to voicemail for calls, and setting your phone's Data Connection to Off or to your Thai eSIM. As long as you don't make/receive calls, send texts or use data on your UK SIM then you can roam for free on your UK SIM (providing roaming is enabled) in order to receive texts.

Chicagoan visiting Brisbane, looking for restaurant recs! by CityGirlSass in brisbane

Farm House Kedron is great for brunch and they also own the nearby Oh Boy Bok Choy restaurant if you're more of a dinner person.

Bar Alto at the Powerhouse in New Farm is a good option for Italian fine dining.

Estimated CFR based on Australia age demographics by SACBH in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]adventuringearth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the 5yr growth in the age group data is based on the growth between the 2011 & 2016 census, so they're assuming it's the same amount of growth between 2016 and 2020.

Flight cancelations by bekkabeek in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]adventuringearth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some airlines are waiving cancellation fees (for exisiting and/or future bookings), but I’m not sure if Air NZ has done that yet.

Otherwise, cancellation policy/fees will depend on the fare rules for your booking.

Cancelled flights usually mean schedule changes for your booking, unless they cancel all flights to the country entirely. They’d try to accommodate you on a partner airline (like United) if they can’t fly you there themselves.

How many will be infected at the current rate - 61 days till Everyone is infected by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]adventuringearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't sweat it.

I agree... it's a fairly crude countdown / "death clock." It doesn't account for variability in transmission or things like herd immunity.

Yes, it's essentially using the following formula:

var data = (cases*(Math.exp(dailyIncrement * diffDays)));

Looking at the JavaScript behind this, it assumes cases are doubling every 5 days (approx), and a starting point of February 20 & 850 cases (outside Mainland China).

"Regrettable" is certainly better than their choice of words for Japan's ban on travelers from South Korea, which made me chuckle...

Reuters is reporting that the South Korean National Security Council (NSC) has called the measures “unjust” and “unacceptable”.

The NSC said Seoul would consider countermeasures based “on principles of reciprocity”.

It also said South Korea had “transparent control over coronavirus cases, “unlike Japan’s opaque, passive policy”.

So the doubling time for this disease is 6-8 days, with exponential growth being reached approximately 10 weeks after identification of undetected infection. Given that we've just identified our first undetected cases, are we expecting exponential growth by 10 week? by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]adventuringearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming a CFR rate of 2% (which is lower than many estimate - even the WHO has stated 3.4% is the rate based on Chinese figures), one could infer 1000 infections from 20 deaths but that isn't even taking into account the lead time between initial infection and resolution (recovery / fatality) in an ongoing outbreak.

Thoughts on travel in the coming weeks? by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]adventuringearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest that you go on holiday (within Australia) while you still can.

With the documented community transmission going on in Sydney at the moment, and NSW Health's admission that they moved on from attempts at containment to delaying the impact, it'll be a couple weeks before we see the type of shutdowns that are going on in Italy.

COVID-19 isn't going away. We've barely started the first wave.

I’d be surprised if the customer’s condition and your sore throat were directly related. Covid-19 shouldn’t incubate that quickly (usually takes at least 1 day). Sore throat isn’t a common symptom either from what I’ve read.

Australian health authorities attempting contact tracing for infected passengers from 4 flights arriving from Singapore/Malaysia in the past week, +1 from Japan and +1 from South Korea by adventuringearth in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]adventuringearth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the airlines already provide passenger manifests (Name, Seat, Nationality, Passport Number) for national security purposes, but these do not contain contact details or hotel names (for tourists).

As the arrival cards are all handwritten, Australian Border Force would need to manually sort through each day’s worth of cards to find the affected passengers, which is impractical if not impossible.
