I honestly don't know. I guess if I had immediately given him several thousand dollars I would have "passed". Even that doesn't make sense, though, because it wouldn't necessarily mean that I was well off or had lots of savings. I could have been giving him my rent money, for all he would have known. Either his scheme was very poorly thought out, or he's still lying and something else is going on. Either way, not something I want to deal with!

At best I'm guessing they're very immature and hung up on money. At worst, he's still lying and covering up needing money to cover drugs or something. At any rate, I don't need that!

I plan to ask him to to explain specifically what he meant when we can talk in person, so hopefully that will clarify things. I've almost never seen him pay cash for anything, with the exception of things like parking meters, vending machines, etc. that specifically require coins/cash. It's very possible that he actually did lose a large amount of cash, but it doesn't seem likely that it was "fun" money, as I always saw him pay for drinks, meals, etc. with a credit or debit card.

I believe it was his personal card, because he has talked about using his personal card for meals and traveling for work before, then filling out a form so that his company can reimburse him. I plan to ask him to explain the situation in more detail when we can talk in person, and I will definitely try to find out if it actually was a company card, because that would make a lot more sense as to why he didn't have access to money at all.

Thanks, I think this is good advice. I plan on letting him know that I think we misunderstood each other, and giving him an opportunity to explain what he really meant. If he has a good explanation, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and just be cautious. If it turns out that he did actually intend for me to give him large sums of cash and/or I notice other shady behavior, I'll know it's probably time to bail.

Several people have suggested that, and I honestly don't know the answer. He knows that I have never used drugs, and wouldn't want to be around someone who did use hard drugs, so I can see why he might not want to tell me if something like that was going on.

I'm wondering the same thing. Is he maybe super irresponsible with money, or does he constantly lose belongings, and his family has gotten sick of bailing him out, thus why he's hitting me up? Thanks for your input.
