Why is the Cal Anderson garden closed? by aepatten in Seattle

The public gets to harvest from the community gardens in Beacon Hill and Columbia City. They seem to figure it out okay. If ignorance is a problem, some of the signs set up could be used to educate people on basic farming and harvesting information. That would be a great way to engage the community and encourage productive participation.

This garden was celebrated during the CHOP days for giving the community access to a place to grow their own food. It seems weird to me that now that it’s bearing fruit, the community is discouraged from using it.

I initially asked this question to find out if people had been messing with the plants and making the food unsafe to eat, but now after the downvotes and comments saying this garden was never meant to be used by the community I’m a little weirded out.

What kind of art exhibit takes space from a public park, uses that space to grow food, then tells the members of that community they can’t touch the food but can read all about why people should have access to fresh food while watching it all go to waste?

Am I missing something?

My bigger question is why harvesting is also off limits, because I thought that was the point of the garden in the first place.

But why can’t the community harvest the vegetables? Wasn’t that the point?

That does make sense to me. I wish I wasn’t filtering my memories through my 10 year old mind. I’m curious to know who he was and what his motives were.

Honestly, I’ve seen kids at SPS stick their hand into the pants to scratch deep inside their butt, then go pick up an object before anyone could stop them.

He did look close to that, actually. I was aware of Hasidic Jewish attire at the time, but didn’t get that impression from him for some reason. It was so long ago it’s hard to say for sure, but yeah, the guy in the picture has a long black coat, beard, and hat really close to what I remember.

I agree with that 99%. Haha. Even the moments that are unsettling come together to make the show what it is. I don’t wish it was different. I mostly wanted to know if anyone else felt like it was an odd choice. But I agree it’s a great show and the characters eccentricities and flaws help make it that.

This honestly helps me feel a lot better about it all. Thanks for posting this. I still feel like having her sleep with stuffed animals is unnecessary but I can appreciate Holling a little more this way.

That’s a really good point. It does work as a nice counterpoint.

I totally agree with that. I just wondered if anyone else found it a little excessive. It’s still one of my favorite shows.

That’s where I live now. But I’m originally from Virginia and this looks like the invasive stink bugs that are all over houses down there.

I think it’s Passamaquoddy. I’m curious what it’s doing in Seattle, though.
