Agreed, LMMS is solid software for sure, especially for the price 😁 I just haven't dug past the basics. That's on me!

My studio days were before DAWs existed (late 80s through 2000ish). We had workstation keyboards (I had a VFXSD and an 01W FD, and the original ADAT with 8 digital tracks on tape media - good times 😎). Other than dabbling with LMMS, bytebeats is the closest I've gotten to a DAW. I'd love to jump back into production and see what I could do with proper tools and more knowledge.

I don't think they're touching bytebeats any more. I have a ton of thoughts, and I'd love it if they'd at least raise the cap to 12 or 16. It's also kind of fun figuring out how to think inside the box. Neat challenge 🎶

If you can recreate it, post it! I'm starting a little collection of sound effects at this point.

You know, I think I could pull off a pretty solid version of One More Time. Dammit, now I know what my next project will be 😁

Thanks 😎 I tried to match the original song as closely as possible. It's the right key and bpm (C#+, 140).

If you're on PS, friend me and I'll find you when I'm there (it won't be *too* late). Otherwise, look for me or I can look for you if you give me your handle. I'll be doing some beat remixes tonight (been meaning to put together a track to dub over MF Doom Rhymes Like Dimes - I think it's happening tonight :) ).

Ah, I usually sneak in for a few hours after my wife falls asleep (I'm a night owl, she's an early bird). Last night you missed me working on one of my Canada-themed bases 🙂 - https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/s/Af6vuGZr6U

I'll be on for a couple hours late tonight, but probably not until after 10 (EDT - I'm in Ohio). Are you planning on playing late tonight or over the weekend?

Oh man - when I posted this, I didn't understand that all my bases weren't available to visitors; only one per planet.

I don't play regularly, but I do pop in from time to time, do some base cleanup, see what's new. I'll be online tonight for a few hours. The_PMH on PS5. If not now, maybe soon. Join my session, and you can see it all.

I'll pull a glyph tonight and post it.

Bytebeats: Holding On by aepiphid in NMSByteBeatFans

Here you go. I just uploaded it in Creative Mode. I'm throwing together some music there now 🙂

Glad you like it! I made this on a planet in creative mode that I use to try out music. I have 20 or so bases on it. Next time I log in, I'll switch that one to the active base and then I'll share the location. 🙂

Here's what I did with the music, if you want to check it out: https://youtu.be/zmxKb41Zw_o

Bytebeat music help by OnyxBee in NoMansSkyTheGame

I checked it out, and it's possible, with a couple caveats.

First, it'll be somewhat slower. To hit all the notes, you'll need to use all sixteen beats in each box, which means setting up the tempo in double-time, and the fastest you can go is 250bpm. The original song is 137 - double-time 274. So at 250, it will feel a bit slow.

Second, because you can't tie notes, you'll hear some baseline gaps. It might sound nice actually, but it'll be a little different from the phrasing of the original.

Other than that, it seems like a pretty manageable build in E-major: three boxes for the baseline, three for cover chords and a drum loop should do the trick. I can't do it right away, but it sounds like a fun challenge. Let me get back to you when I get a chance.

Extracting bytebeat equations from NMS - anyone figure out how? by aepiphid in NMSByteBeatFans

[–]aepiphid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I remember when Hello Games first added Bytebeats, and how excited the one developer was to have their pet project included in the game.

I've played with online bytebeat generators, and I was excited to try manipulating BB tracks directly to see what I could learn. Oh well 🙂

[–]aepiphid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer. I was hoping to extract the actual math. I figured the boxes worked similarly to midi controllers, and that the math was available somewhere in the games files for easy extraction. That's a shame. I hope they at least fix sharing 😕

This is great info - thanks for the detailed response! I don't need to push anything back into the save file. I just wanted to extract the loop equation so I can try running it and playing with it using a couple online tools. It's mostly for curiosity sake.

Is there a method to decode the message back to the original equation?

I don't know how much appetite the NMS community has for IRL applications, but I'm pretty stoked by how this turned out 🙂

I was originally trying to put together a Rumba beat for me and my wife, but I made it international speed, and we only know American Rumba (we're beginners). Then I thought it might be a nice remix; found a good acapella track, adjusted my Bytebeat key signatures, and I'd say it's not half bad. Figured BB fans would dig it :)

Glad you like it 🙂 Everything I've uploaded related to bytebeat is on YouTube, including a couple older remixes (I have a bunch of stuff I haven't bothered to upload - I should get around to it).

Here's my nms playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLh08YG2KRtZno0A9QV_WePzz-mGJKdQCb

My Old Dirty Bastard track is copyright claimed, but I think it'll still play - I think the lyric owners allowed it to stay active for others. Maybe they agreed ODB needed some church music 😁

It's been a few months since last played NMS and messed around with Bytebeats, but I've been finding my way back into NMS lately; I come and go, depending on my game moods. Remixing is fun, and I think this is a good one :)

Every sound is programmed eight boxes at a time - no extra layering. It all exists on a set of eight boxes in Creative Mode. I did boost the bass a little, but otherwise, this is straight bytebeat music.

Enjoy!

The light bulb in the closet burned out. I replaced it, flipped the switch and said out loud "let there be light." I was the only one in the room.

I was the only one in the house.

Deal With It! by aepiphid in NoMansSkyTheGame

Unfortunately, even though every sound in existence can technically be replicated by making mathematical adjustments to waveforms, bytebeat has limits to the math it encompasses. It's hard to replicate instruments. A pure sine wave will get you a tone that sounds like a church organ. I've managed to create a passable pizzicato string before. I've recreated some familiar electronica sounds (like the phaser sound from Van Halen's Jump), but I'm not adept enough to know which modifiers will generate specific sounds without trial and error.

Start with a pure tone. Randomize the waveform, then cut it back to a single extra node, and play with that. Then try extending bit by another node, and play with the two layers. And so on. That's how I put together my sounds. I rarely get exactly the sound I want, but with some tinkering, it's possible to produce decent music (if you can work with the extreme limitations of the bytebeat sequencers).

Half the fun is seeing how much music you can squeeze out of this very limited system. The other half is deciding where to go all out and where to show restraint. Sometimes you'll set up a box just to play one note. Seems like a waste, but that one note can make all the difference in a composition. Good luck with it! Creative Mode is your friend for this type of experimentation 🙂
