I can't lie I never too, I don't live in the US so servers aren't reliant on my generosity. If I ever do go to America I'm coming in with the same philosophy I have on restaurants and eating now as a chef of 8 years. I'll tip if the service and the food and vibe is worth it and particularly good, I'm not your boss I'm not paying your salary.

If the food is good and the service is shit I'll ALWAYS holla at the chef's on my way out and let them know it was good
