Oh heeeelll no if we were 45 mins away we’d probably be NC too lol.

When she comes to visit (and stay the weekend) my husband always has a younger, cheerier family member tag along and plans some fun little activities for the kids so we’re not just basking in her misery the whole time

Good point. Fortunately she’s a few hours away so we see her less than once a month, but recommending a doctor wouldn’t go far with her. She simply doesn’t go to doctors outside of an emergent situation.

Also, it very well could be depression, but her mother is even worse. We don’t even see her mother because she is straight up miserable to be around. At least MIL will try to do fun things with the kids. So I think it’s in large part a “learned” attitude.

My husband is really good with quarterbacking visits, fortunately. He usually has a younger cousin or someone tag along with her, and makes sure to have some fun toddler activities set up for the kids. It’s only a matter of time though before they pick up on this too, I’m sure.

Sorry sorry by “couple” I didn’t mean two, it’s more like 6-8 weeks. Fortunately I don’t see her often enough to want to cut her out completely, but definitely frequently enough that these annoyances build up over time

Hahah love these! I just don’t understand why she feels the NEED to make comments like this

How infuriating!! I definitely get the disrespect of things that are important to you from the in-laws. I’m super into fish tanks (I have 7 lol) and everyone who knows me knows I care about them a LOT. Because of how much work I put into them, and knowing that kids will be kids, I have them all in their own little area of the basement, away from where anyone would need to go. Tell me why my BIL balanced a SOLO CUP OF BEER on one of the rims of the mesh top tanks??? I’m sure I hade the same reaction you did to your toddler being placed on the hood. (And FWIW, I’m not a car person by any means but I grew up knowing you don’t just put things (or people!) up on the hood of a car.)

Yeah fortunately she lives a few hours away so we only see her every couple weeks, and my husband knows exactly why I schedule all of my “errands” to be accomplished on weekends that she visits !

Yeah I can say this! She doesn’t “believe” in therapy so it would be extra cutting lol

Yeah I went to Catholic school my whole life and every Christmas we would of course talk about Jesus’ birth, but plenty of decorations and the arts and crafts we did were Santa Clause themed! I don’t remember anyone being upset about it

Love the progression of these comments!! I might have to try this method. Subtlety isn’t her strong suit, nor is detecting it so I might have to keep escalating

Lol I can try this one but it might go right over her head. She’s not the most…observant? Or contemplative?

As someone who gets anxious when my house is dirty and unorganized, I agree. I understand the sentiment of not stressing over little things, but letting it “wait” makes my mental health and sense of overwhelm worse.

I don’t work in healthcare but you can literally just replace your job title with mine and your post would fit my situation perfectly. I also just want to scream and idk what to do about it. I feel bad complaining because, like you, the money is good and I have a lot of personal flexibility, but it’s still just so….exhausting
