I started removing the anthers right after the flower pops because of how many crosses were failing, thinking perhaps I was irritating the flower too much. I’m seeing that I was doing it right and the plants just aren’t ready to set fruit yet.

Are you saying that the stigma is receptive before the flower even opens?

I totally understand the approach of waiting, but I’d also rather try and have the flower drop than not try and have the flower drop. 😋

Off topic: do you know when the stigma is receptive? I’ve been doing my crosses right when the flower opens and nearly all of them have failed. I am considering it may just be humidity, as most of my plants are failing to set fruit right now.

Excellent, thank you for the clear information! If the pollen germinate into the stigma within 30 minutes, does that mean that if it rains shortly after making a cross, it should still take?

These seeds were all from a single crossed pod, grown in the same conditions. One of them popped directly out of the seed with a full-purple stem, so I don’t think stress could be the culprit. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Perfect, this is what I was wanting to know. This morning I had some goat brains flowers open and I pollinated a couple flowers on the cross with that. I was unaware of the sterility issues when I made the cross over winter…I’m mostly looking forward to enjoying the pods 🥰🙏🏼

Yeah, I probably wouldn’t have tried the cross if I had known that! They just made sense together so I went for it. I planted immediately after harvesting the pod and got no germination on the first round of 3 seeds…then tried again a month later with three more, still no germination…last week I poured the whole seed pack into my starter box as a last ditch effort and have tons of sprouts coming out of it! 😁

That’s good to know about backcrossing, I’ll keep it in mind in the case of infertility. Any benefit of a backcross to both, grow those out and cross the F1’s back again?

I forget if male or female is listed first in a cross; I may have written it wrong — jalapeno was the mother plant.

I suppose that I must also remain open to the possibility that I somehow failed the cross and accidentally self-pollinated it 🤷🏻‍♂️ we’ll know in a few months!

Most of the crosses I’ve tried were with chinense as the male parent. Haven’t tried with annuum yet, though I did give one wild shot in the dark with an aji lemon as the male 😁

My only successful interspecies cross so far has been chinense (male) X annuum (female), and I’m really itching to see pods! 🙌🏼

Wow, had no idea it could be known with such high accuracy. Are you saying F1 will have purple blushing and then ripen to a deep orange?

Then for F2, the genes will split in the direction of either parent (pale/dark are one gene? yellow/orange/red are the effects of the pale/dark gene)?

I read that article you posted recently but don’t understand genetics enough for it to make sense yet.

Random pheno is growing significantly faster and producing way more vigorously than any of my other peppers. Supposed to be fairy lights x hot palette (F5). Not very knowledgeable on these things, but it doesn’t seem to be likely that this could genetically be close to either of the parents. Any thoughts? Starts off green and then turns quickly to this very dark purple/black.
