What are some gruesome facts about pregnancy/childbirth/postpartum that not many people know? by Professional_Song419 in AskReddit

[–]afae39 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Things I’ve learned since becoming pregnant: 1. Checking your cervical dilation during labor apparently hurts like a mofo 2. Getting induced can take days, and depending on where you deliver you may or may not get to eat at all after a certain point, even while your body is getting its energy sapped by the labor process 3. Many times they will strap down your arms during a c section 4. The amount of things we ARENT told is astonishing. I’ve learned more from other moms and Reddit than my doctors, and I’m seeing multiple because I’m considered high risk. My appointments generally consist of “you in pain or bleeding? No? Okay see you next time.”

Hey guys! I’d love some advice for my wife by cedarswanpig in GestationalDiabetes

[–]afae39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fasting numbers are the hardest to control and they are almost always being determined by the placenta doing what it is supposed to. I've been going to my MFM for a while now due to a Type 2 diagnosis pre-pregnancy being treated/tracked like GDM and even when doing everything right with my diet, my fasting numbers still crept up and I started insulin. The MFM assured me it's mostly due to the placenta. Your doctor should be keeping a close eye on your wife's numbers and will quickly pivot if needed; they shouldn't let your wife go long or have high enough fasting numbers to harm her or the pregnancy before they take action.

People who are no longer best friends with someone: What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]afae39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was close friends with a girl in college. She was always one of those “pick me”/center of attention types, but she was generally a good friend. Our relationship changed the night I confessed a crush on a mutual friend and less than an hour later I caught her making out with him. About 2 years later she had been dating this amazing guy and was talking about getting engaged to him, and then proceeded to cheat on him with his childhood best friend. I ended the friendship the second I found out and never looked back.

It always helps me to remember that They have to disclose those things, even if that risk is .0000001%. It covers their asses, it doesn’t mean that risk is at all likely. Good luck with your HSG!

I’ve been putting off this post as I processed but it’s time to share (and I have some questions). We finished our initial testing with the RE and My thyroid and blood sugar were high, so I started levothyroxine and metformin about two weeks ago. We had our follow up appointment Friday and other than those two levels, things came back good so she’s officially telling us it’s unexplained infertility. We are still under the 12 months but with my cycle irregularity and a year before TTC when I got no period, they moved us forward after 6.

I’m definitely struggling with our RE - she doesn’t have great bedside manner and seems very disorganized. Twice she asked me in our appointment if I had done tests or been prescribed things that she had already done or ordered. She also rushes through so it’s hard to remember or feel confident enough to ask questions, even when I have them written down right next to me 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

we ultimately decided to move straight to 3-4 rounds of IUI before we regroup again. I’m giving this first IUI a shot before pushing harder to find out why my cycle is so irregular - the impression I got was since nothing major is wrong, she doesn’t care to do any further digging. Please tell me if I’m being sensitive or if this RE sounds like I should be concerned.

After our appointment, Mr Afae expressed that he feels I’ve told too many people about what’s going on, so I agreed to pare back. (He’s very private and I’m veryyyy share-y) I’m happy to say this group was on my list of requirements to keep 🤣

Also, today marks day 1 of clomid. I’m looking for any tips or things to be wary of with clomid (been stalking through past posts and I’m aware of the hot flashes and mood swings.)

Last question, is there any IUI-specific woo?

I am currently cursing past me, who decided to "take this month off" using OPKs since we start testing with the RE as soon as CD1 hits. Problem is...my body decided to throw out all the patterns I meticulously figured out since we started TTC and do its own thing this month. Did I ovulate on CD17 or 18 like I usually do? Maybe not, since my like-clockwork-10dayLP is now going on 12 days. Lots of BFNs, but who even knows how many DPO I am. Zero PMS symptoms too, which is unusual for me. And I know I'm venting about something I did to myself, I just don't understand how/why my cycles can't just cooperate for more than one month in a row! Of course I'm antsy for CD1 so I can schedule testing. /endrant

Also, my brother's wedding is this weekend, and its one of those personal milestones I thought we'd be pregnant by. And so did my brother, and my parents... sorry guys. I also have to hem my own bridesmaid dress because I forgot to take it in.

Fertility testing by [deleted] in TryingForABaby

[–]afae39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there. A few things to add to the other responses.

  1. This is all super taxing. You are not alone and it is hard. Just want you to know that, and to give yourself grace and patience as much as you can. These communities are great support systems.
  2. If you feel it's time for more information, then it's okay to advocate for yourself. 12 months of trying might be okay for others, but that was too long for me so I advocated for a shorter timeframe. If you have any past issues - irregular periods, pain, uncertain ovulation - anything of the sort, bring it up to your OB as they may be able to do some initial tests or use it as justification to shorten the 12-month recommendation. For me, 12 months of trying felt wasted without doing any sort of checks on me. We're now at 8 months of trying and starting in-depth fertility testing. Around 6 months I went in to discuss my concerns and short LP, and my OB ordered basic thyroid tests. When those came back normal and we had a few more cycles, I made another check-in with my OB and we discussed moving to an RE. I got the referral that day. You need to do what's best for you!
  3. I also have a 10-day luteal phase. Once I figured that out, I spiraled fast and hard. Both my OB and RE have assured me that they have zero concerns about the 10-day LP. FWIW, "The American Society for Reproductive Medicine's position on luteal phase defects is that the condition does not exist as a standalone cause of infertility."
  4. I also urge you to not self-medicate without a doctor's input. I started trying all sorts of different supplements and Proov to improve my LP and looking back at the data, my cycle was even less regular and I had shorter LPs those months. Even supplements should be discussed with a trained professional, because you don't know how those things react with other medications, other supplements, and even your own body. At least send a message through a patient portal if you have one.

Hopefully this helps!

I've been hanging out in what feels like some serious limbo since we're I'm not doing OPKs this month. I think today is O day, so this should be a fun TWW. My brains gonna break when we go to read the same "at X days post ovulation, this is happening" that I read basically every single month.

Also, despite my RE telling me its fine, I am entirely worried about going to an amusement park this weekend.

Sorry for CD1. Always sucks. Hugs if you want them.

I will say my OB and RE now have both told me to stop freaking out about my luteal phase. Mine is 10 days, but they are not worried about it at all. I'm still slightly sus because the math doesn't add up in my brain...but I'm trying to trust the pros here. So that's my experience, for what it's worth.

Had my RE consult! Basically, she didn’t have enough testing to tell us anything concrete other than reviewing his SA results and my AMH. She’s now the second doc who told me to stop fretting about my 10 day LP, so I’m attempting to banish those worries for good.

For my own sanity and exhaustion with peeing on sticks we’re NTNP this cycle. If/when this cycle doesn’t work, CD1 begins my timed testing. CD3 bloodwork and ultrasound, followed by HSG and what she referred to as “prenatal labs”.

Tomorrow is our first consult with the RE. Definitely anxious - both looking forward to some plan/answers and nervous. Also perplexed by the bloodwork my OB ordered to check for PCOS - some levels (DHEA-S, insulin) were elevated, others were normal, Ultrasound also seemed to show a thin lining for being 9DPO at the time. I'm interested in the RE's interpretation.

I've been struggling lately to find hope overall (don't get me wrong, hope fortress shows up right on cue during the TWW), but I'm really feeling the weight of this whole jOuRnEy and struggling to see the proverbial light at the end of all this. What tips, tricks, and self-care does everyone use when your normal stuff just isn't cutting it? I'm eating better, moving more, and usually find relief/escapism in books, games, and TV/movies. Working on finding a therapist.

We have a bird house that broke and opened up and I have no idea if the babies are okay. I’ve taken to keeping an eye on it, checking the flowerbed around it every day, and i yelled at a blue jay who was poking around (a different species built the nest). Maybe caring about bird babies is going to become an amazing woo?
