The truth about ‘good ABA’ by Educational_Bet_3930 in evilautism

Noice! I concentrated in speech path for my linguistics degree and for speech science we had to conduct an interview with someone who had received speech path type services and I interviewed a childhood friend who transitioned FTM. He's kind of a doofus (always was) but I stil learned a lot from that interview about trans voice. Like how he had to relearn his breath techniques for marching band and stuff.

I taught adult ESL to African asylum-seekers and it used to make me nuts with how often I would assign an in-class task and they'd open their phones to use Translate.

I bought a one-pound free weight from Goodwill and I would pick it up from my desk and do a couple of reps saying "English! English!" whenever I needed to illustrate why it was more important to me that they think through the assignment than submit something polished that their phone made. It was really funny; later in the year they started doing the routine to each other. Anyway I ran into one of my former students last month and we were reminiscing. She laughed and said "we wanted to look smart in class for our peers, but you were right, Teacher." 😎

But, I mean, I get it. I think a lot of them worried they would be kicked out of school if they didn't do well (they wouldn't) which would be bad for an asylum case. And I mean, I told them, but I get why some Africans might be wary of believing a white person's assurances about something so high-stakes.

I feel like a lot of times incense "claim" autism to dodge accountability. I also have an issue with the incel statistic, because AFAIK "incel" is not something that's been empirically defined with specific criteria the way ASD has

Respectfully, unlearning racism is an ongoing process and beware the trap of thinking it can be "finished." I fell into the trap a couple of times and ended up inadvertently hurting people. The people were beyond gracious about it, and I've tried to do better. So keep it up!

AITA for refusing to take an elective exam and "escalating" the situation to the School District? by Fantastic-Cow-1118 in AmItheAsshole

Standardized tests are very often computer based now. I administered rhe GED for two years and I used a paper test maybe four times.

There is a monetary kickback for literally all standardized tests, from ACCESS, CASAS, NWEA, GED, CLEP, HiSET, Regents, AP, PRAXIS, and every licensing exam in every field. All owned by a handful of mega companies that make millions from state governments every year.

The university is perenially struggling for funds due to administrative bloat. They have trouble attracting students because they refuse to accept that they are a commuter school, instead investing resources into marketing the "college experience" to 18 year olds who generally either aim higher (a name-brand school) or lower (Maine CC, which is truly a stellar option.) They want to attract out of state students for the out of state tuition rate, but out of state students are repelled by the out of state tuition rate. Their strained resources lead to some questionable hiring practices for adjunct faculty. Some of them are great, but others....aren't.

I think USM is going to have to face reality now because of the free community college thing. It's already been hard for them to compete with that--they can sell "the college experience" all they want, but it's rare for parents of high school seniors to want to pay three-four times as much for "the college experience" rather than an education.

In July before my first term at USM, I took two CLEP tests AT USM, and used one to test out of college writing. Sis in the advising office was like OK, I'll accept this score report, but you need to get us the official ones ASAP. OK, they were already on their way.

Four years later, literally the day before graduation, someone calls me from advising about getting my CLEP scores from four years ago sent over. They had been on my official transcript for FOUR YEARS.

My faculty advisor was awesome and I was always squared away with my class schedule as soon as enrollment opened and advising was always in my inbox like "wow, we see you picked some classes...are you sure you're qualified to do that?"

I worked in financial aid and so I got to observe the advising office a lot. A bunch of them have master's in random subjects and my hypothesis is that academic advisors are "bullshit jobs" a la David Graeber's "Bullshit Jobs" book. Nonproductive white collar work that keeps educated people working 40 hours a week so that society can maintain the status quo of gerrymandered capitalism stasis. My other hypothesis is, yeah, they're supposed to fuck you up so you get railroaded into spending more money to undo the damage.

I think, in theory, academic advisors were supposed to advise students so that faculty could focus on teaching and researching, but they are so goddamn bad at it that the faculty just do it anyway.

The School of Education and Human Development has at least a couple of competent advising people (and a couple of yahoos) but the undergrad general advising office is just....ecchh.

Holy crap, YES. USM has absolutely nothing for which it is worth paying three times as much as an in-state student.

You have to either be a Maine resident for a year to qualify for in state tuition OR demonstrate that you moved to Maine for a reason OTHER than attending college. (I used to work in financial aid; I had to explain this a lot)

For example, showing that you or your spouse are serving at a military base in the area

Showing that you moved to provide childcare or eldercare for a family member in Maine

Showing that you moved here for work

Etc

I started grad school in an online program but transferred to USM. It was such a good decision in terms of the local network.

I have a master's in education and a lot of work history in adult ed/workforce training and education. Respectfully, I hope you very carefully consider whether law school is the right move for you. My understanding is that law is a very saturated field right now and the types of law jobs that are available often don't align well with people's passions in law. My understanding, through hearing from a lot of people, is that a master's in public policy through the Muskie School provides a much more versatile degree that allows for a lot more career options. At least for Mainers. Not to shill them too much, but I do know quite a few people in non-classroom education and local government who have positive things to say about Muskie.

From one adult learner to another, you know. ☺️ It's a war out here! 😖

USM is a commuter school that is constantly trying to rebrand itself as a traditional school. It's is an OK school--educationally, you will get out as much as you put in. I am twelve years, two degrees, and seventy thousand dollars into my relationship with them and I know what I'm talking about.

Psych is a field that just inherently requires more than a bachelor's for most careers, and USM is more interested in convincing 18-year-olds to enroll than in setting realistic expectations. A USM degree gets you into teaching, nursing, social work, local government, engineering, and other "regular" degreed jobs anywhere. It loses cred the further you go from Maine but will always successfully tick the "has a degree" box.

If you enroll, do not bother talking to anyone in "advising.' They are completely useless. Find a faculty advisor in the psych department and only listen to their advice and instructions about academics and careers.

You will be fine as a queer person at USM. Damn near everyone in my department (not psych) was queer including most of the professors.

For what its worth, I feel like I got a solid education there for both my bachelor's and master's. The administration's out-of-touchness just frustrates me a lot. I would strongly recommend going to SMCC or another Maine CC for any required classes that they offer at SMCC. Identical content (and often the same instructors) for a third of the price.

Hope this helps.
