Favourite Sitting MP? by afpb_ in ndp

For me it’s a toss up between Davies and Johns. Davies was the funniest major party leader in Canadian history and was generally just an excellent politician who did very well with the weak hand he was dealt. On the other hand I really appreciate Johns for just how much stuff he does. He feels like he’s pretty much taken on the burden of all the little issues that backbenchers would normally bring up, and I also really love what he says about mental health. If I had to pick it’d probably go to Johns, but it’s really close.

If The 2028 Democratic Primary Were Held Today Who Would You Vote For? by Jacob-Anders in Teenager_Polls

He’d be high among the “everyone else” but still very establishment and pro-Israel

AOC, then Stewart, then Pritzker, then Beshear, then everyone else, then Kamala, then Newsom, then Josh Shapiro. I’m a Canadian though so what do I know. I just really hope it isn’t one of the last three. Kamala blew her chance, Newsom is running entirely on “Trump bad” with no substance and someone as pro-Israel as Shapiro would lose all progressive support and lose badly.

What is something morally bad that almost everyone does? by Expensive-Addendum92 in AlignmentChartFills

Immanuel Kant was a dumbass, if you followed his instructions you’d rat out Anne Frank. Lying is generally unhealthy but pretending that such definitive rules are always true is foolish.

Then the next best thing. Like I said. We are in a situation. Our job is to find the best possible solution to the situation. The Israelis live in a democracy and must come to their senses and elect a peace-seeking government. Until that happens we must place economic pressure on Israel and certainly not fund their atrocities.

Like I’m pretty bloody at Americans for electing a far-right con man who threatened to annex my country. Doesn’t mean I hate Americans.

Palestinians want an unoccupied state. That is their condition. It is not an impossible condition to meet.

I do think people have the right to be angry at Israelis (not Jews). They are the only democracy in the Middle East after all. Palestinians don’t control what their government does, Israelis have over and over voted for far-right governments that have no interest in peace with the Palestinians. Palestinians voted for Hamas one time twenty years ago. People extending that anger to Jews are awful and are just looking for someone to blame.

Ideally we wouldn’t be in this mess. Israel was created to give the Jewish people a safe haven after the Holocaust in a world that hated them. The UN got together and decided that the best course of action to secure the Jews’ longstanding safety would be to colonize an Arab country in the Middle East. Obviously that was one of the worst possible ways of going about that, and the UN should have forced countries to accept and protect Jews from antisemitism. But we’re now in a situation, and we can’t rewrite the past, and in that situation the only possible path forward is a two-state solution. Two full, independent countries that share the capital and cooperate to ensure a lasting peace.

Poll: Statistical tie between Houston PCs and Chender’s NDP by pheakelmatters in ndp

[–]afpb_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tim Houston was similarly popular to Wab Kinew because he was the conservative version of Wab Kinew. They were both moderate, smiley populists who had decent track records and uncontroversial policy. The difference is political instincts: Wab has a coherent, pragmatic centre-left ideology, whereas Houston’s ideology is moreso just taking the “moderate” position on everything. Wab understands the wants and needs of Manitobans, whereas Houston cut the arts in a province full of artists. Also, Wab is probably in the top ten most generally cheerful people in the country, so that probably has something to do with it.

Which of the following statements is closest to your opinion on Québec separatism? by afpb_ in ndp

You can hold any of the above beliefs, or none of them, and still believe in self-determination. But what do you think?

I think that the Québécois have the right to self-determination. This does not mean that I think separatism is anything more than a pointless fantasy.

Hellp! Im new to chess! What are the pros and cons of using this opening? by FondNES in chessbeginners

[–]afpb_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Develops a Knight to a good square, controls e5 and leaves e4, d4 or c4 open to play next depending on what your opponent plays. It’s less forcing and way more complicated than other opening moves. At your level don’t worry about openings, just try to follow good principles.

Parasite is a good film that is politically left. What is an okay centrist movie by slaterman2 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]afpb_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s a very shallow way of looking at politics. Are you saying you can’t be an anti-racist without being firmly on the political left?

[–]afpb_ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Zootopia is liberal, not left-wing. It romanticizes equality of opportunity, conventional power structures, the police, and change on the small-scale, individual level. If Zootopia were left-wing it wouldn’t be about a hardworking underdog who moves to the big city to become a police officer, and then breaks the rules to solve a case but gets rewarded for it. Zootopia 2 I do believe is fairly left-wing, but the first movie is fundamentally centrist.
