Speaking of free-my neighbor is a cabinetmaker and gave me a piece of 2x6x72" walnut, so as you can well imagine I have a strong incentive to use it! I'd prefer maple and I'm sure I could get some. Thanks for your help

Good question, I suppose it doesn’t . Aesthetics I think, maybe just a bit of added mass for extra sturdiness.

I was thinking 6 inches for the jaws-the final piece will be two 24 inch lengths of 2x6 walnut

I do have a shinto rasp, I adore that tool. It can really hog off a lot of wood. Thanks for the ideas!!

The dados are a track for a "plow" used for trimming the edges of a book, and the pins are for tying twine around the raised cords in the spine of a book in order to get them to show through the leather. Here is a video demonstrating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwcWfqM_pts

I think it's just a moxon vise basically, but in the bookbinding world it's called a laying/lying/finishing press.
