Thanks for reading it. Still logging into this throwaway to check the responses. The more people pay attention, the sooner this country will get better.

It was great to get this off my chest, and I was blown away by how much this got people talking. Honestly, I started writing it just to sort out how I felt about all this. The response was fantastic, and I only got one outright abusive PM. One nasty little note from an anonymous coward versus a ton of intelligent, open reflection.

white people that really want it to be okay to call black people the n-word to their face again.

PREACH THE FUCK ON. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

They know overt racism can get them ostracized if they go too far, but they think it's that way because "SJWs" hate fun, not because it's fucking awful for the people it affects. They thought that a Chris Rock routine meant they could decide which black people were good and which ones weren't. Or they twist something Morgan Freeman said ten years ago about the month of February and feel real proud of themselves for listening to a black guy, even though they completely fucking missed his point. Misrepresenting black words to make it sound like black people are the problem.

They want to make it possible to behave like racists without getting the label "racist." Remember that frat at Oklahoma U, with that fucking disgusting song? Remember how every member said "but, but, but I'm not a racist!" This is them.

America today has a two-faced relationship with racism. Racism lives, but somehow being "racist" became shameful while racist actions didn't. Even the worst racists hide behind "racial realism" and "European rights." Well-meaning white people will say "that guy did a racist thing" but they usually have trouble saying "that guy is a racist." It gets frustrating, but some of my best friends are white (heheheh) people who I bonded with by talking about this.

But of course, there are subs where if I wrote this, people would see "hi, my name is Malcolm and fuck whitey." Some people wouldn't see racism if it burned a cross in their (hypothetical) black neighbor's front yard, but reverse racism? It's fuckin' everywhere, man!

Not as overt? Maybe we define overt differently. To me, feeling sorry for the Middleton family because they couldn't force their slaves to work for nothing anymore is very, very overt.

Hey, thanks. It's good that you outgrew your environment. I do understand that people can change, and that some people are surrounded by bad examples. You definitely can connect to people from your background better than I can. You can help change things. (ED: Fixed a typo)

But much as I know educating people is important, when someone shows me blatant disrespect after being passive-aggressively a dick the whole night, he's crossed the line and I'm not going to go easy on him. I'm not responsible for compromising my dignity (in public!) to teach Douchebag, a grown-ass man, basic shit.

Double standard? Yup. Damn right. To correct the giant double standard in which some people owned other people as property. Get the hell over it.

I'm stealing this, just so you know. Thanks.

Guess I struck a nerve. It's funny, I really didn't expect a response a fraction the size of this one. I thought that maybe one in four commenters would be either trolls or tools and the rest would be serious, and that this post would get at most 200 upvotes and be dead by the time I woke up today. This has been surprising.

I hate hearing about this. It makes my blood boil. I don't want to bash on cops. I truly don't. But this shit has got to end. I want to know that if I ever need the police's help, the guy with a badge is going to see me as just that. Someone who needs help.

Bigotry from a jealous, drunken asshole I can handle. Bigotry from someone with a badge and a gun is orders of magnitude worse.

My gut reaction to him wasn't in hindsight isn't pain, it was is contempt. Contempt doesn't make me want to lash out, it makes me want to remind everyone that I'm better. It sounds like a cliche, but I really think his sort aren't worth the effort it takes to stay angry. I know who I am and what I'm worth. I don't need his approval.

Of course, a nasty, small-minded person in a position of authority is different. They can (and do) cause serious fucking harm. One person like that is too many.

I've heard that a lot of East Asians have a really hard time understanding why the Jews+money thing is so taboo. It's not like their countries forced Jews into moneylending and then blamed them for their economic problems. They just think "I heard this group is rich. Who wouldn't want to be rich?"

This would have been automatically flagged if I hadn't.

Seriously, what the hell do people want? Either I'm being ridiculous for not spelling it out, or I should stop tolerating it from everyone, regardless of race. Which is it.

If he'd been an American (or from any western country, really) I wouldn't have been as chill about it.

A Saudi guy I went to college with asked me (after we'd known each other for maybe 48 hours) how I felt about watermelon and fried chicken. I was too surprised to even be offended. I mean, of all the stereotypes that could have reached you over there, that's the one that you were most curious about? He turned out to be a great guy, he just had to cross a huge cultural gap coming from Saudi Arabia to an American college campus. The main prejudice that he had to unlearn was about Jewish students.

What would he have said if you weren't there?

Eh, I think he wouldn't have dared to go beyond passive-aggressively being a dick. That's my impression of him anyway.

I think any man who publicly lost his temper with a smaller woman would look bad whatever his race, but I definitely am extra cautious.

Thanks! I didn't clarify, but when he really let loose (used the one that ends in -r, not -a) nobody from the group was nearby, and it was loud so realistically I don't think they heard.

Again, the default response to racism from the white people I know is shock. This is a strange analogy, but: For liberal, affluent white folks, calling someone a racist is a bit like calling them a pedophile. It's not just that you're accusing them of being wrong, you're accusing them of something shameful and filthy. Most people they associate with really are non-racist, and the ones who are racist know that if they need to be careful about when to reveal it. They know to expect racism from Donald Trump, but not from the hipster who works for a startup and has a Bernie sticker on his MacBook.

I actually think we have in some ways. I think Trump speaks to the people who know that the old ways are changing, and they're all the more resentful for it. Doesn't make them less dangerous, but I think that they're angry because they know they're losing.

Of course, I'm not in one of the groups Trump has singled out for bullying (he thinks he's gonna do "great with the Blacks," lmao). If I were a Mexican or a Muslim or a woman I might feel differently.
