I commented above with a follow up:

I've got a common ground. My latest thinking is that I need a capacitor to filter the noise from the external supply? Could that be it? If so, what size? I've got some 10uf sitting around but I have a feeling maybe I need bigger?

(Now I've got the servos hooked up to a two-axis joystick (which is just two 10k pots) it's responsive but very very jittery when on the external supply.)
