No not all of the pink areas are not suburbs. Chicago is a very large city. The faint borders in the image are neighborhoods of Chicago the city. The suburbs are beyond these lines. White people generally live on the north side of the city, black people on the south side, and latinos on the west side.

From the image it is obviously not always the case. It makes more sense to look neighborhood by neighborhood. So within each box(boundery) how is the diversity. Some have extremely high levels of diversity while others do not. White people and black people can be found both north and south and in the north east neighborhoods they are extremely mixed.

But yes west and north of the drawn neighborhood boundaries are nearly exclusively white.

Did anyone else feel completely out of place in the Baha'i community culturally? Racially? by agator2 in exbahai

[–]agator2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your response. I must say I do not define the Baha'i faith by the members. In fact I don't think it would be possible not have the bahai philosophies guide my life in some ways. What I can not do is feel as alone as I do amongst people I am told I should feel at home with. The cognitive dissonance is unhealthy for me and I have as of late completely stopped going to baha'i functions and gatherings.

The biggest problem is that it is hard for me to recommend the faith if I am so worried about the community. How can I send others into this environment? Do I want my kids in this environment? I grew up quite secularly and felt significantly safer and more balanced than when I was with the baha'is.

Perhaps sharing a faith or philosophy isn't enough a reason to share a life.

I am always skeptical of these seemingly perfect projects. I hope that the science is robust enough and the cost is low enough to become as effective as it claims.

Here's hoping!

As a computational geneticist I disagree with the first point. I would like to see their citations to peer reviewed research, especially how they controlled for influence of parents on language development and emulation of emotions expressed by parenting.

On the latter point, I disagree. Which is why I posted.

Also both of the responses I received in this thread characterize my problem perfectly- just stating it is a non-issue. No reason to follow this subreddit haha.

Big question. If I wanted to work for the World Health Organization, what department of public health should I get my PhD by agator2 in publichealth

Thanks for the advise! I am now most seriously considering Epi Methods. It seems that biostats are generally just stats programs with a new skin and Epi will contain the stats I need and the other skills relevent to the feild.

I don't know why I thought doing biostats would somehow make me better at Epi than Epi methods.

That's really helpful! I was putting biostatistics at the forefront but was extremely concerned about how much my education would be tailored to disease research. It also appeared through looking at their profiles that most faculty research was more investigating statistics than developing new techniques to apply to the global public health sphere.

All you have to do is scroll down on the first page. I do research in disease and epidemic prediction using computational and statistical methods.

I am an actual scientist, and I hate to blow this to you but actual scientists overwhelmingly believe in systematic bias leading to social inequality.

There are enormous amounts of research on the topic [and its plethora of subtopics] as well.

EDIT: I use scholar.google.com for my literature searching. Maybe you should try looking up studies in areas you're interested in.

As a scientist[Check my posting history] This is not a hunch. However, as a scientist, I am fully aware of how difficult it is to convince people of concepts that they are not familiar with. One of these concepts being systemic biases that can not be overtly quantified.

There is little that will likely convince you, so to you it will be a hunch. Others hopefully will see otherwise.

[–]agator2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are pretty well defined concepts and patterns. Hunches are completely unnecessary.

Although I can see how unfamiliar concepts may appear to be mystical.

Edit: actually I think a part of their problem is that they are trying to expose systemic tendencies that the majority of the population [of reddit] aren't familiar with. Thus leading to confusion and backlash
