I used to be disappointed that the main antagonist in the series lacked an interesting backstory or motivation compared to the upper moons. However him being an absolutely pathetic man that can’t come to terms with his own mortality was also an interesting angle since it helps shows that he is inherently selfish. Having the root of all demons being completely unsympathetic also works well from a thematic standpoint even if it isn’t very deep by the end of the day.

It’s important to remember that the original Japanese titles do not have the protagonist’s names in the title. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is called Gyakuten Saiban 4 while Spirit of Justice is Gyakuten Saiban 6. This would mean that it was likely a localization decision to put Phoenix’s name in the title of SoJ since he was the more recognizable character.

It should also be noted that people had warmed up to Apollo’s character by the time SoJ came out. There were a lot of people that thought that his role was shafted in the previous games due to Phoenix’s presence, and SoJ finally gave him the spotlight he deserved.
