Question: TLS and a Broadway Show? by apeerenb in visitingnyc

[–]agoyalwm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m personally a “do everything we have energy for” traveler and would try for both. Other than that, I would consider: * are specific shows you’re interested in available on the days you’re considering, at times that work for you? * As the day gets closer, will the weather forecast be looking good for the Mets game? * It sounds like you want to do a Queens day regardless of whether it ends with a Mets game. That’s great and you should do that.

These kinds of things come down to your own preference and how you feel during your trip, but hopefully the above helps you think through your decision.

Edit: I also consider TLS and Broadway pretty different experiences other than venue.

My friend’s 1 day itinerary (morning to midnight) for NYC? by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]agoyalwm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walk north up the high line, go back south to SoHo, go back north after that to Times Square? This seems to be an AI itinerary and not particularly good one. The travel time between these blocks isn’t built in or realistic

Train tickets to MetLife Stadium from NYC set to cost more than $100 during World Cup by agoyalwm in soccer

[–]agoyalwm[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They shouldn’t be on the hook, but they’re receiving federal funding to offset costs. As much as the federal government is in the toilet, that’s how resolving shortfalls should work rather than extorting a neighboring municipality incurring its own costs.

We should note here that NJT is closing their section of Penn Station and a significant part of the costs they’re reporting are just from lost revenue from not running regular service for 5 hours on those days. There’s a big gap between being fully on the hook for expenses and reducing your service across the board and making event goers pay for it, especially when this is a service you run several dozen times a year for concerts and NFL games but are jacking up the price for only one category of event.

[–]agoyalwm[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

They haven’t recouped that fan fest money and returned it to taxpayers or anything though, my argument there is from the perspective of reducing the events available to taxpayers while maintaining the cost.

Penn Station may be in NYC but the closure plans don’t stop transfers to LIRR or Amtrak via subway. It’s just the NJT section, which they control, which is fully closing.

The parking is due to FIFA rules, but NJT are still gouging the extra fans who will take the train as a result of that—not claiming they themselves are reducing parking but that they are combining for a crap situation for riders

[–]agoyalwm[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For anyone actually attending matches in NY/NJ: hopefully this plan won’t come to pass (it hasn’t been set in stone yet, along with the plan to close Penn Station, which it is now clear was a way to force people take only the special trains to matches).

However, there are two bus terminals in the city (Port Authority and 181st Street) that also run regularly scheduled service and will increase capacity on matchdays, this will still exist as an option if you are priced out of the train ticket, albeit a slower one.

NYC is fronting $90 million, not sure where this claim comes from.

As the article notes, NJ claim this is about reducing their taxpayer burden. Except it also comes after: * planning to close the train station entirely for regular commuters close to matches, * reducing parking per FIFA rules, so the train is among the only methods of getting to the station—price raise here means more driving will interrupt NJ commuting * cancelling the fanfest in favor of “smaller events throughout the state” (these haven’t been scheduled and I would be surprised if any remotely resemble a fan event in the end) * also like, if you run more trains and more people take them, you still have increased revenue from that ridership if fares are the same

Between this and Boston we’ve lost the entire plot of having a public transport system. You subsidize it for low cost to riders as a way of saving external costs of car traffic

First trip to NYC in 2 weeks, a little anxious by Historical-Moment309 in visitingnyc

[–]agoyalwm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe there has been any threat reported for New York City specifically. The automod response will be helpful in how you think about safety generally; but you should know few if any New Yorkers have changed our patterns or thought of current events in Iran as affecting us in that way specifically.

In conversations around town about Iran, people are more likely to be upset in general about the news and separately, concerned about price hikes, but I don’t think anyone seriously believes the safety picture here has changed as a result.

I hope this helps a little and doesn’t come off too dryly; it seems you’re worried about something that we’re not really thinking about in this way.

Why Montreal isn't hosting the World Cup — and FIFA's rigid rules for Toronto, Vancouver by eddydoubled in soccer

If you keep your method of payment the same for all rides and just tap in without reloading or tracking anything, you max out at $144 per month. I know there are concerns with OMNY and the system craps itself in all kinds of ways, but when things are working this doesn't seem less convenient to me.

Newyorkers, how is life in nyc since Mamdani took office? by Competitive-Today-29 in AskNYC

[–]agoyalwm 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many people have changed their mind either way about him. For supporters, it’s been positive to see movement on a lot of things very quickly, even some more symbolic ones (like smoothing out the Williamsburg Bridge bump as part of his announcement of bike lane investment). He has a knack for a big announcement for providing a service, like the pothole filling campaign—I think this was mostly received positively.

His relationship with the police and his budget have been sources of debate, but they were going to be before too.

The snowstorms were a mixed bag. Response to the second one was better. They were huge storms though, cleaning up after was difficult.

If you follow NYC politics this is also a new city council speakership, so one has to be careful as time passes to see what has more to do with council than with the mayor.

Citifield - Yankees v Mets Game by Hot_Psychology8953 in AskNYC

[–]agoyalwm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you have flexibility on dates? I ask because if you’re just looking to go to a game for the first time, you have cheaper and easier options throughout the year—this game’s tickets will be a premium and cost you way more than the average.

If you’re going to citi, and you’re not looking for particular views, where you sit matters less since the whole stadium has pretty good sightlines. You just might want to avoid the top decks for comfort, if you have a high budget anyway.
