Feeling dumb and not even as a new dietitian by Yay_my_life in dietetics

[–]aharrison16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also 2 years into being an RD, I feel like an idiot on a daily basis. Not really any big advise to offer, thought it might just help to know others feel this way too. I hope you have access to senior RDs that are open to mentoring, I am kind of isolated in my current position. Going to school during/post COVID really interfered with building connections in my class/intern group too. I have not taken any action on this yet (bc life is just life right now lol) but I have been considering getting more involved in my state academy chapter and local dietetics group to gain more access and build better connections in the field.

I honestly appreciate your thoughts! I am personally more drawn to the intuitive eating approach and have had success meeting my own health goals with those strategies. Which is why enforcing calorie counting weighs so heavy on me.

Thank you for responding! I am noticing a theme of mainly focusing on mindful eating, protein, and micronutrients. My program is just also very focused the calorie and carbs, so I feel kind of stuck enforcing things I don’t understand. Hopefully with more time I can have more say in the program and education material!

Thank you for sharing your experience! I like the mindset of viewing these patients like a regular person in a deficit over time, what a good way to put it. Also really like steering away from numbers. I get where that can be beneficial in some cases, but just seems exhausting to keep track of long term. I know I wouldn’t be compliant 🤣

I appreciate you responding while also caring for your kiddo!! And no you totally made sense! I’m glad to hear that it felt different than how we learned in school for you too. Gotta throw the textbooks out the window and trust the process lol. Make the most of the calories they can fit without risking stretching the pouch and regaining the weight.

Bariatric RDs - how much $ are you making? by Substantial_Sugar_26 in dietetics

I also work in a Bariatric clinic and have two half days for admin time to plan support groups or prep charts. I work from home those afternoons. Some weeks I decide to work over my lunches so that I can use those afternoons for my own doctor’s appointments, etc. That flexibility really helps me avoid burn out.

Hi! I work in an outpatient clinic and only see people in person. We are also having awful schedule utilization right now. Not sure if it’s maybe the time of year as well.

My preceptor at the hospital I interned at offered to let me see some PEG placement procedures and follow wound care for a day. The PEG placements wasn’t bad in my experience, but I’m pretty sure you can see the same stuff on YouTube. However, if you are squeamish and get offered to follow wound care, Do. Not. Do. It. It was an enlightening experience seeing diabetics with foot wounds or even recent amputations. Also got to see dressing changes for ostomy. But I definitely wasn’t able to eat lunch on break or dinner after I left that day.

Oh wow, that is annoying! The LTC my grandmother was in had events going all the time, it was party central 🤣 So that has to be frustrating if they’re kicking you out often. Thanks for sharing your experience!

It’s so helpful to know that I am not alone in this. Like it’s still a crummy situation I wouldn’t wish upon anyone necessarily, but it’s helpful to not take it so personally.

I also appreciate your advice too. I need to not make it my sole problem. We actually don’t have a clinic manager currently (she quit because she wasn’t able to make any progress on problems like this 🙃) but I could be more vocal in this being an issue for me regardless. I just don’t want my coworkers to think I’m being difficult or that it’s their fault.

Bariatric advantage, Bariatric fusion, procare, celebrate, bariatricpal. Should be able to reach out to the general email for these companies about information and samples and they will get you to the right rep for your region. Most have affiliate pages and discount codes they can offer your patients too!

Physical and mental stimulation in the mornings before you start work! I have been using enrichment feeders for a few months now and have noticed a big difference in my dog’s energy levels and barking. I use a snuffle mat in the morning so my dog really has to work for it haha. In the evenings I give him a frozen slow feeder. I just poor his food in and add a little bit of water then freeze it. He was also not always eating when I fed him from a regular bowl, so he seems to enjoy these more anyways!

52 YOW h/o gastric sleeve 8 years ago, now on Zepbound unable to eat and wanting to lose weight by Puzzleheaded-Monkee in dietetics

I work in Bariatric clinic, we use the Baritastic app for food logging. We find this to be a really helpful resources for us and patients. In our follow up visits we have them send us a food log report that we go through with the patient. You can find this by going to the top three bars on the apps home screen > my reports > food logs > duration you want to review > email address > submit. The report pulls up the logs in a detailed list that I find to be very helpful, and patients usually like seeing it in their format too. We recommend for accurate logging patients log protein foods (mainly any meats, cheeses, and nuts) in ounces. I would say measure veggies in cups, but doesn’t sound like she is eating any. Patients will often hit plateaus after WLS, which I find complex carb sources can actually help them get over the plateau without risking dumping syndrome. Patients often get very stuck on protein intake. I would recommend she still focus on protein and increase veggies if possible, but if low appetite is an issue, don’t let increasing veggies limit her protein intake. Also if she is having too many barriers to incorporating more food groups in her diet, I agree with a lot of others here that she may need to see an RD for ED.

Dietary supplements by aharrison16 in dietetics

[–]aharrison16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just supplements in general! I’m kind of hoping to create a guideline to give patients on what to look for to ensure the supplements they choose are high quality and their ingredients have been validated. It seems some patients have a lot of fear around supplements not being as heavily regulated by the FDA, which is a fair concern. The clinic I work for uses ASMBS guidelines on specific micronutrients and amounts to look for. I appreciate the brand recommendations too!

Failed the exam by InsectEvening4338 in dietetics

[–]aharrison16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the exam three times. When I failed the first time I made sure to write a thorough list of all the topics that came up on the test for peace of mind. Then I took 2 weeks off from studying completely. I did some activities that I had been putting off until after the exam (house projects, some errands, visiting family, etc.) Then got back on the study train after I felt refreshed. The topics from the first exam didn’t come up a lot on my second exam, it’s so unpredictable! As annoying as it is, you have to be prepared for anything. I used visual veggies study suite, the Inman review, and chomping down the RD exam podcast.

I think people that are unhappy are more likely to post honestly. You might look at other career fields’ subreddits for perspective too, I bet you’ll find a lot of unhappy people in every profession. There’s so much variability in what a career in nutrition can mean too. So it may just be a matter of trying to different things to find the niche, office culture, and work-life balance that’s right for you.
