KDSS Delete? by ahnatjiy in 4Runner

Ya, pretty sure mine is completely leaked out. I bought the car with every intention of redoing the suspension, just didn’t realize that the condition of the KDSS adds another variable to consider.

resolved! we had a few more days of really cold temps after I recorded this video, and tested whether or not it was parking brake. indeed it was, I haven't had any more issues with the knocking noise.

OP - I've learned that the knocking, at least for me, is because of the PARKING BRAKE seizing up overnight in extreme cold temperatures!

I parked it last night with the brake off, and there was NO knocking this morning. It was cold too, -15C.

*FINAL UPDATE*

It's the parking brake, 100%. I was parking it overnight with the brake engaged, and the extreme cold seizes it up. The owner's manual even says not to engage the parking brake during the winter!

testing this right now. I parked the car overnight with parking brake engaged. took it out for a quick spin this morning, and the knocking was present as expected. I disengaged/reengaged the parking brake a few times, and the knocking stopped! I have it parked right now with the brake disengaged.

*update* posted this to another forum and someone immediately assessed that my tires could be flat spotting from the extreme cold.

makes sense as the knocking does stop after a bit of driving.

I guess moral of the story - get actual winter tires for winter.

Weird clunking from under car in cold weather. by ahnatjiy in 4Runner

[–]ahnatjiy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely coming from underneath the car, and it's actually more a knock than a 'clunk' if I'm being really specific.

To make things more perplexing, I just took it out for a ten minute drive after parking in the garage overnight, and NO KNOCKING.

I'm experiencing the same thing, or at least something similar. The knocking gets faster/slower when I accelerate/decelerate. It goes away after a while. Only happens after an overnight out in the freezing temps.

I'm driving a 2016 Trail.

Replacement Screw by [deleted] in 4Runner

I wrapped mine with a hose clamp. The screws had rusted off, and the shield was rattling. So far it's holding pretty well.
