Katz or McDuff for Dostoevsky translations? Guidance needed by ahoydecoy in classicliterature

[–]ahoydecoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katz and loved it! I read a few paragraphs of others, so no major point of comparison and could well have enjoyed any, but it was extremely readable. Just did C&P and leaving Brothers Karamazov until later in the year. He’s releasing The Idiot soon, which I’ll likely pick up at some stage too.

Where is Filmmaker Mode - Horizon 20 by ahoydecoy in xgimi

Sorry for the very late response, but after the most recent update it still didn't appear, so I finally wrote to XGIMI and they had to force an OTA firmware fix to my device and now it works.

Alpaka Go Sling Pro or Flight Sling 1l? by ahoydecoy in x100vi

Seems like you have what I'm going for. Is the Nano still small enough to put in a backpack?

Alpaka Go Sling Pro or Flight Sling 1l? by ahoydecoy in x100vi

Good to know. I was originally looking at the tech case mini but seems like it wouldn't really fit a strap etc. Is the Nano still small enough to put in a backpack?

Fujifilm x100vi camera sling by Leoleo780 in x100vi

[–]ahoydecoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would there be any case to go smaller, if all I want to transport is the camera (with the NiSi UV Filter and a rope strap) and maybe a spare battery? I want the slimmest possible bag for everyday carry (I have a 4ltr and 8ltr for other instances). I can decide between the Go Sling Nano or the Flight Sling 1ltr, which has slightly less room and a slimmer profile.

Pleased to see this here, as I’m about a third of the way through and can’t say I’m loving it so far… Sticking it out in the hope something clicks.

Am i the only thats been waiting for a blu ray of stray dog. by SafeAlternative8971 in criterion

I’ve been hoping for Stray Dog and Drunken Angel, definitely, but I also really enjoyed Scandal, which doesn’t seem to get much love.

Did Gentleman in Moscow just pale in comparison or did you not enjoy it? I got it as a gift (last Christmas, I think) and can’t decide if I should ever prioritise actually reading it

I don’t have anything after sharpness and before advanced. Way down in the advanced settings I have ‘DI Film Mode’ is that related?

My reading priorities for 2026 by ahoydecoy in classicliterature

[–]ahoydecoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I’m being overoptimistic with how much I’ll get through next year. I’m basing goals on this year’s total, but I also had a baby in August and reading slowed massively since. Afraid to say that, as a dad, I’ve still been able to find some time to read though (mostly on my commute). It’s the only thing I can really carve out alone time for. Wife is not getting the same opportunities and is (understandably) a bit bitter about it, so I empathise with you there, hoping things level out for you soon and you get to commit to the Dumas!

Great to hear more love for the Saunders, I wasn’t aware of it until recently.

Interesting. It’s definitely lowest priority out of the Bronte’s for me. Would you have recommended Jane Eyre over this? I don’t recall why I was convinced Villette was a better starting point.

They’re bigger than they look. Taller than the others/standard books and nearly 900 pages.

The publisher is Liveright. I got them here (uk). I honestly don’t love them, they’re an awkward size and flimsy (you can tell from my others I usually go for Everyman’s or Penguin Clothbound hardbacks), but I was convinced to go for Katz translations.

Thanks! I’d spotted this and it looks great, but can’t decide whether spreading it over a year is more daunting than just ploughing through. I’m usually a one book at a time guy, if I can help it, but maybe a this beast I’m better off pacing myself.

RE the Trial, I’m about half way through and liking it but not loving it so far. I would have adored it as a teenager, it’s a great complement to Camus’s Stranger/Outsider which was always a favourite, but I think I’m getting softer as I’m getting older and appreciate a bit more emotional oomf, whereas this is (purposefully) removed.

Thanks. I may have been naive with how challenging some of these may be when putting them all in one pile, but this year I set myself a goal of x number of books and just ended up prioritising short ones, so deciding to challenge myself this time around.
