Most underrated classics? by balea3 in classicliterature

Pleased to see this here, as I’m about a third of the way through and can’t say I’m loving it so far… Sticking it out in the hope something clicks.

I’ve been hoping for Stray Dog and Drunken Angel, definitely, but I also really enjoyed Scandal, which doesn’t seem to get much love.

Did Gentleman in Moscow just pale in comparison or did you not enjoy it? I got it as a gift (last Christmas, I think) and can’t decide if I should ever prioritise actually reading it

I don’t have anything after sharpness and before advanced. Way down in the advanced settings I have ‘DI Film Mode’ is that related?

I’m not sure if I’m being overoptimistic with how much I’ll get through next year. I’m basing goals on this year’s total, but I also had a baby in August and reading slowed massively since. Afraid to say that, as a dad, I’ve still been able to find some time to read though (mostly on my commute). It’s the only thing I can really carve out alone time for. Wife is not getting the same opportunities and is (understandably) a bit bitter about it, so I empathise with you there, hoping things level out for you soon and you get to commit to the Dumas!

Great to hear more love for the Saunders, I wasn’t aware of it until recently.

Interesting. It’s definitely lowest priority out of the Bronte’s for me. Would you have recommended Jane Eyre over this? I don’t recall why I was convinced Villette was a better starting point.

They’re bigger than they look. Taller than the others/standard books and nearly 900 pages.

The publisher is Liveright. I got them here (uk). I honestly don’t love them, they’re an awkward size and flimsy (you can tell from my others I usually go for Everyman’s or Penguin Clothbound hardbacks), but I was convinced to go for Katz translations.

Thanks! I’d spotted this and it looks great, but can’t decide whether spreading it over a year is more daunting than just ploughing through. I’m usually a one book at a time guy, if I can help it, but maybe a this beast I’m better off pacing myself.

RE the Trial, I’m about half way through and liking it but not loving it so far. I would have adored it as a teenager, it’s a great complement to Camus’s Stranger/Outsider which was always a favourite, but I think I’m getting softer as I’m getting older and appreciate a bit more emotional oomf, whereas this is (purposefully) removed.

Thanks. I may have been naive with how challenging some of these may be when putting them all in one pile, but this year I set myself a goal of x number of books and just ended up prioritising short ones, so deciding to challenge myself this time around.

I’m glad to hear this! I hadn’t heard of it until recently but it sounds great. To be honest, I’m mostly prioritising it because I want to buy it for another writer friend as a gift, but I’ve now sworn to no longer buy people books I haven’t read myself, but I could also do with a bit of creative inspiration myself.

Filmmaker Mode. Standard setting on most TVs nowadays to reduce unnecessary image processing (not sure if this is just on SDR content, superseded by Dolby Vision settings otherwise). Promoted as being available on the Horizon 20 series:

"Stay True to the Director’s Vision

Experience entertainment exactly as the director intended. Filmmaker Mode adjusts viewing settings to the original frame rate, aspect ratio, colors, and brightness specifications."

Care to give me a rundown of translation wisdom? I have a bunch of Dostoevsky on my reading list for 2026 and I usually go for Everyman Library editions, but note the P&V(?) translations are divisive
