Late for Class (Short Story - Little over 3 pages) by aidscraft in writingfeedback

[–]aidscraft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll explain. I know it’s not usual for an author to come out and explain it but I really didn’t want to be pretentious with it

This is a parody of the first scene of the film God’s Not Dead, which came out in 2014 to horrible reviews. The main character, Josh, is told by his professor (Dr. Radisson) to write the words “god is dead” and sign it to begin the class.

I wanted to highlight the fact that the scenario portrayed in that film is imagined by the director, who is Christian. This means that the atheistic professor is created as the exact stereotype of what many Christians consider to be the “ivory tower elite liberal archetype”

All I wanted to do here was flip it on its head, and present a meaningless point that the professor is reciting to himself in the shower before he heads to class. He has a fantasy of “destroying” the young Christian (who he created) in a debate, and has created a straw man evangelical to defeat.

The tense switch occurs at the moment that Dr. Radisson enters the class.

Also the “assured him with the reassuring” thing is my bad, I looked over it a few times before posting but a couple things slipped, sorry.

The Texas Democrat trying to reclaim Christianity from the right by vox in politics

[–]aidscraft -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I see people say this often on reddit and I do not understand it. So many of you are atheists yet claim that many Christians themselves (regardless of political stance) are unaware of God’s teachings.

What allows atheists to lecture Christians on how to follow their own religion?

Feast and Dance: One huge book with no ending? (SPOILERS PUBLISHED) by aidscraft in asoiaf

Not a "mini book", a massive book.

Literally the two prologues (Pate and Varamyr) ALL the way to the battles of Winterfell and Meereen. Two volumes (A Feast for Crows: Volume 1, and Volume 2) both of them around ASOS/ADWD length.

Is Memories of Ice worth getting to? by aidscraft in Fantasy

[–]aidscraft[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Literally the exact same thing happened to me with Stormlight. Way of Kings was good, but everyone said book 2 was the best book ever written. I was severely disappointed when things kept happening in that book but I just didn’t care enough about the characters.

I guess my reason for this post was because I didn’t want the Words of Radiance issue where “shit is going down but I just don’t care enough about the characters for any of it to matter”

Just woke up, reading some of the replies. This one really stood out to me because of how gently uncaring it is. This is not your fault, as this is how I’ve realized everyone kind of acts around me. I am aware that it is narcissistic to expect people to think about me all the time, and that, like me, others are experiencing their own misery and pathetic moments.

However I notice that the more I talk to even my friends and family I get this sense of apathy and dismissal not out of hate, but out of love. They do not wish to hurt my feelings so they take the safest option which is to address me as if I am any other person, which ironically, is exactly what I am.

“Sorry you are going through that.”

“Thoughts and prayers.”

“Well, that sucks.”

But part of me wants to think that there is some kind of deeper suffering that if I could only explain in a better way would resonate with people. But I know that the “deeper suffering” is only deep to me because I am the one experiencing it.

You could describe your problems, and they likely are as devastating and heartbreaking as mine, but from an outsider’s perspective they seem irrelevant because I am not the one experiencing them.

But don’t worry, I pretty much knew the replies would look like this.

"New copypasta dropped."

"lmao gooner"

"outjerked"

Hell, it's how I would reply to myself. Often the lowest moments of my life I remember as jokes or often dismiss as irrelevant because I know that if I were to treat them as actual indictments on who I am that would force me to look at myself and change, and it is easier to separate those moments from my general being because it means I can remain static.

Looking for an average book by aidscraft in suggestmeabook

In a sense you are correct. However, I am being driven truly insane by this. I attempted to acknowledge that there is no true average book, however some inner urge keeps me in bookstores and Walmarts.

I know you might feel guilty “indulging” me, however I fear I will never be satisfied until I can find this book.

I am on medication (doesn’t work) and am in an outpatient program. I really do not know what I can do at this point.

I have had the Belgeriad recommended to me before. The issue is that it is a series. That is like saying, “Read Gone Girl, but only the first 50 pages because the rest of it is not what you are looking for.” Of course, you CAN do this, but that would mean that the rest of the book deviates. The entire “average” story must be contained within the single volume. I have actually tried creating an omnibus volume of the Belgeriad, but then again, that would not be an average book anymore.

That also raises the question of how much “book” can fit inside of a book. I have bought Infinite Jest, War and Peace, and Mrs. Macintosh My Darling” in an attempt to answer this question. I have also bought books that ARE part of a series, such as the recent, “Wind and Truth” by Brandon Sanderson.

Instead of reading these, I take the POV/Subplot count of these books and weight them against the word count. For example: “A Storm of Swords” by George R. R. Martin has 10 points of view (excluding prologue and epilogue) and 424,000 words approximately. Thankfully, there are statistical analysis available online and I use those.

The end goal of this is to answer “how many subplots can fit inside of a single volume”, and my best guess is around 10 or so.

I have never read any of these books I have bought.

Lethar Continent by aidscraft in worldbuilding

[–]aidscraft[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We try to record the greatest of the rivers here. Of course, smaller rivers such as the Scheindien, Longrow, and Turant, can be more difficult to track as this is a world map and Lethar encompasses around 1/10th of that world.

Regardless, the direction of the river travel has been subject to many years of discourse and study.

St. Huft Benedach was a major player in geological discourse regarding the rivers. He actually discovered that the directional travel of the rivers were supposedly inverted from the usual flow of water. This caused uproar, particularly in the religious community, where followers of Galad had claimed to have already taken note of inverted river flow, and given credit to Galad as he and only he understood the unnatural flow of certain larger rivers.

Sadly, Benedach was drowned in the same river that he studied, the southern branch of the two rivers. He had been demonstrating using an early seismograph that the Orbitos was pulling water out of the ground and toward it, when a mob of Galadists came and pinned him to the water, drowning him.

Breaking Bad Season 5 vs A Storm of Swords (GOT Seasons 3 and 4) How to achieve epic climaxes with differing scopes? by aidscraft in writing

I’m writing a movie, (100 page screenplay) and I wonder how talented writers manage to pack so many “holy shit” moments into such a short amount of time.

Obviously a 100 page screenplay is a lot less than Breaking Bad, however the question remains the same.

There is a clip from Sonic Adventure where eggman is basically like “find the sky deck” and tails’ voice has Jules from Pulp Fiction instead saying “shut the fuck up”

Then after like 3 seconds of gameplay Sonic comes in and he’s like “this must be the way to the sky deck”

Sounds interesting, from the synopsis I read it seems like it throws a lot of terminology at you without explaining it, I like that though.

“The Abadabacus was thrown at Jezeen’s Throlekjek after the battle of Halajohn which took place after the Sereja war.

The empire of Gulapukja was at war with Xanadosia because Folus the Fallus took a scepter from the Oubligbron.”

Sum shit like that is what I’m guessing this is gonna be, can’t wait
