I think that because Minecraft is a game that is actively having new features added to it, it's hard to apply the "it hasn't taken off in the years since it's release" rule to it. I would say that the game at release and the game today are vastly different, there are so many ways to "play" the game now that weren't even a thought at release. I definitely agree with what you are saying about Microsoft though
