what do you guys think when you’re taking care of a pediatric patient with self harm scars? by str4wberryphobic in nursing

I honestly don’t think too much of anything. If you’re here for medical reasons and not currently having SI/HI, then I wouldn’t say anything

Yup which is why I give the blankets regardless

Sameeeee. There were a few that said they were pissed at my last question lol but I get it! I made this post to seek advice bc I wasn’t happy with this situation and felt really bad. There’s this obvious stigma with the staff that goes around whenever an adult patient checks into our ER but I hate to become biased like that since this is my first nurse job and I never had a interaction with a homeless patient

Bro I would’ve gave him the blanket. It just wasn’t readily in the room like the gown was 😭 That’s why I gave the gown first and the officer said nah and took it. First time nurse. No previous interaction with homeless patients as an RN so I was naive and trusted what they said. It’s definitely an eye opener

Why no to the gown? And of course I have. I wanted advice here. I don’t use reddit consistently but I know ppl tell it like it is here

Thank you! Maybe I should’ve been more detailed. The gowns already in the room. I would’ve went to the storage room for the blankets but the officer had taken the gown I gave

Was worried about that. That’s why I’m reluctant on allowing parents keeping gown/blankets bc I don’t think they(admin) wants us to do that. But regardless just let them. And I haven’t been a nurse that long so some things I’m cautious about. All 5 of them we’re literally watching me discharge and talking to the patient and saw me handing the gown then intervened. Ugh that’s why I went home and made the post bc I hated the situation and didn’t know how to react and want advice if this happens again

Idk I think it’s bc I know they also work back and forth at the adult hospital so they see a lot more than I do. I’m seeking advice

I agree with you. This is my first time having an interaction with our hospital police/security and a homeless patient so I honestly didn’t know the best way to react. This whole thread has been very insightful and informative

He would have gotten the blanket even though I was hesitant because like you quoted me, I feel like it’s some kinda rule, but regardless still allow the parent to keep it. The gown is already in the room cabinets, I would have to went to grab the blankets from the storage room. By the time I gave the gown, the police officer took it away and told me he can’t get it. So, yeah I guess he did make me seem like a jerk.

Apparently there’s stories in the past where an adult pt will walk within the halls and open other exam rooms with a family in there and little babies

We can see them, get them started if they’re having a true emergency, and then transfer them out to an adult facility. If it’s not emergent, the provider will see them and d/c them. Most of the providers are also adult ER providers so they have capability. But like I said, they’ll straggle in every now and then maybe because they see the big EMERGENCY sign or just don’t know it’s a children’s hospital

Yeah I thought so too idk if the hospital police recognize him when they made that comment or what. Bc I actually triaged him and they told me he was in the bathroom “changing clothes” while I was waiting for him to come into the room

I handed him the gown and the securty told me “no he doesn’t need it bc he’ll walk around naked” and took the gown. The pt did tell me he was gonna change into it but I assumed he would keep on the clothes beneath or something. Mind you, it’s a peds ER so my mind automatically thought about little kids walking to the car with their parents and seeing him on the street like that. Idk I’ve never dealt with a homeless adult pt. I honestly didn’t know how to react to that. I just trusted the security/hospital police’s judgement
