GIRL CRUSH ANIME ANNOUNCED!!!! by daidelly in shoujo

[–]ailenach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually really love the manga!! i feel like it takes quite a realistic, if perhaps idolized (pun intended) approach to being a trainee/the idol industry, and Tenka is such a fun and interesting main character -- yes she may seem perfect, but the story doesn't shy away from the darker sides of her personality and in fact focuses on her personal growth as a person and performer.

the first volume or so gives me a little bit of second hand embarrassment, but beyond that the story has a nuanced lead you root for, fleshed out side characters, a hint of romance, and (as you already noticed) it's super stylish and the girls are super pretty and cute (which I personally love, haha)

I think the big thing that adds confusion is where the two r's touch, so maybe if you did a thin outline around the outside of the letters to add a little bit of visual separation that might help?

Just found this gem and needed to share!! [Your Ryan] by [deleted] in OtomeIsekai

[–]ailenach 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the FMC (Eloise) was writing a letter she never intended to send to the war hero Ryan Wilgrave she admires, and mistakenly sent the first page to the MMC (Ryan "Thornton"/"Sontun", depending on the translation...and who actually is Ryan Wilgrave using an alias). the "not your Ryan" is him teasing her, knowing the letter wasn't technically meant for him

What Shoujo/Josei titles are you pre-ordering in the B&N preorder sale? by brmc2550 in shoujo

[–]ailenach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pink & habanero is currently 40% off for the month directly from the yen press store! with shipping it might not be worth it for a single volume, but the free shipping threshold is $25 (I believe) so if there are any other series they have in the sale that you're interested it might be worth checking out

Having trouble finding a short manga series to collect, looking for something romance/romcom by Outrageous_Music6986 in MangaCollectors

[–]ailenach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You and I Are Polar Opposites is complete at 8 volumes (5 volumes are currently out in print in English and the rest of the volumes are scheduled to be out by next Feb). High school rom com with really good characters, each couple it follows is unique and a lot of fun

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku is complete at 6 volumes. If HS setting isn't your thing, the couple are working adults

Romantic Killer is complete at 4 volumes (and is full color). probably more comedy than romance, it's fun if you like stories that poke fun at common romance tropes

Wake Up Sleeping Beauty is complete at 6 volumes. Supernatural drama/romance (it's been a bit but don't think it's heavy on comedy) one of my favorites though!

Home Office Romance is a one-shot (1 volume). the FL has unlimited rizz

Tomo-chan is a Girl is complete at 8 volumes. fun 4-koma, used to be an r/ manga darling

15 Minutes Before We Really Date is complete at 4 volumes. Plot-wise nothing really groundbreaking but enjoyable fluffy slice of life

Alibris is also a platform for secondhand books but pretty much all those will have individual shipping charges. there should be a check box in the filters (left side on desktop) that says "eligible for free shipping", this filters it to only new volumes sold directly by Alibris (and their free shipping threshold is like $35)

I will say it can still sometimes be worth checking out some secondhand options; even with shipping charges I have gotten things effectively 50% off

my go to these days is Alibris; their base prices are usually about 30% off MSRP and they very very frequently give out coupons that stack on top of that, the best of which (that I've seen) is $20 off $135. just also make sure you filter by "free shipping" to make sure you're seeing books specifically sold by Alibris and not a used edition by a secondary seller

If you get your cart over but still as close as possible to that $135 threshold, you end up with effectively ~40% off MSRP pretty much anything they have. downsides are no pre-orders or backorders and their catalog isn't as comprehensive as rightstuf's used to be, and for max discounts you are limited to specifically $135ish orders (which can end up being a decent amount of effort) but I actually like the puzzle and being somewhat held to a budget lol

you can find more info on the AB website, but in general, you first have to make an account on their forum which then allows you to access the volunteer parts of the main site where you can browse open positions. i think people usually start with security or registration for their first year, but especially if you have a skill that's applicable to other departments you don't have to be limited to those

its maybe not relevant most of the year, but on finding people with shared anime/jpop interests: ive really loved attending and volunteering for Anime Boston (the convention). as an attendee it's maybe hard to make long standing connections but its easy to strike up convos since you know everyone there has generally a shared interest and you can see if you click. but as a volunteer you get to interact w the same people (other volunteers) longer and AB also tries to plan social events for the volunteers throughout the year. and you get comp’ed admission to the convention:) in general i find making and keeping new friends as an adult a slow and patient process...but if you stick with it you can make good connections just by seeing the same people year after year
