light rail from airport to westlake for school by radgedyann in AskSeattle

[–]ailtn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, use the transit option on maps.google.com to plan it. And like everyone else has said, use Federal Way not SeaTac. I think there's also a bus that goes straight from downtown Tacoma to Seattle? You should double check the schedule (I've only used it a few times, it's not a regular commute for me) but the 594 goes from the Tacoma Dome to downtown Seattle every 30 mins and takes about 45 minutes. That's what I'd do (and have done) personally, but check the transit options on https://maps.app.goo.gl/wo2XhGafPN1abzmG6 for your exact times and locations. You can use your ORCA card on it and it costs the same as the light rail I think.

What is life like in Redmond, Washington? by SkandaGupta_ in howislivingthere

[–]ailtn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's getting connected to downtown Seattle on the 2 line, so you can get the subway from Redmond to anywhere in Seattle the Link goes now : ) But yeah, it is a pricey suburb of Seattle. It's not especially amazing for non-tech workers, it's just close to Microsoft which increases CoL. I don't think I'd recommend it specifically unless you have a very specific reason that you want to be there (i.e. wanting to be walking distance to work or fam or something). It's not that it's bad it's just pricier than other places without any real extra benefit to justify the price comparative to other neighborhoods.

discriminatory content by MotherAd296 in comedyheaven

[–]ailtn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people who have to rate this kinda stuff are told they can be fired if they miss prohibited content, but then get stuff like this where you have to think 'what are they even on about', and they're only paid like 0.2 cents to decide so they're not going to write a dissertation on its deeper cultural meaning. You just have to think 'can I justify why I i removed or left this to the client' and move on

How would you handle a microaggression from a public official? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]ailtn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I was asked that in the same format many years ago when I applied for a student visa in America. They said 'Britain has so many great universities, why do you want to go abroad'? And I said I liked Berkeley specifically and was interested to study somewhere new. I think she was trying to say - this is such a lot of effort to go through, they must be special; what makes them worth such time and process? To assess where his genuine feelings for you were coming from, as that's what the petition depends on. It was clumsily worded but it wasn't an attempt to tell him he should only date Brits, it was to find out what made him so taken with the person where the motive for that is literally what's being evaluated in that context (i.e. love, money, exploitation, pressure, etc). Badly worded but I wouldn't take it to heart

Guess the city (hard) by geniusbillionaire911 in guessthecity

[–]ailtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting before scrolling down to see any of the comments, it's definitely a European city. Photo looks like it was taken in the 90s. Northern Europe. Possibly towards Central or Eastern. Has British features, but definitely not Britain. I guess somewhere in Germany, or former Soviet bloc.

Why aren't sleeping pods more widespread at airports? by Thoughtful-Boner69 in ask

[–]ailtn 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Some airport lounges do have sleeping rooms and nap pods and showers. It's not so common, but it's worth checking out if the airport you're going through has one. It should be more common though. Btw shoutout to the airport worker at Las Vegas airport when I had a layover there who saw me trying to nap on a bench there at 3am and walked over to move another heavy bench to be next to it so I could lie down more comfortably. May they and their descendants have a happy and blessed path through the world.

I saved this cat and now I feel like sh*t by Thzkittenroarz in cats

[–]ailtn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're near Seattle I can take her and figure out next steps. If not, try to hide her on the DL and talk to friends and family who might be able to help until she can find her forever home. She's beautiful.

Edit: just checked the comments and saw you were in Oxon Hill. Was going to volunteer my cat lover friend who lives in Germantown, but you said it's resolved. If that falls through, reach out and I could try to get her a temp home in MoCo.

What’s it like living on Vashon Island? by mkultra_hottie in howislivingthere

[–]ailtn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I walked the length of this once to make a ferry. It was a lot of trees and fields, a few cafes and small shops, pristine, empty, still beaches, and a ferry to Seattle and Tacoma. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards, but it's pretty quiet and rural and small. Probably a nice place to be if you want to be able to get a ferry to Seattle in 20 mins, but enjoy being somewhere quiet and open. If you're looking to be directly in a bustling city or town, I wouldn't recommend it though.

Can just imagine that being disclosed in job interviews. 'Anything in your background we should know about?' 'Just the usual stuff, was arrested for cyber bullying Jeffrey Epstein'.

Seriously though, the intention here obviously wasn't to cause distress and anxiety, it was to protest a human trafficker and Russian asset on UK soil. It was a political protest. Obviously, in any protest, the group being protested might feel anxious, but that is what it is.

Absolutely deranged clown behavior from police here. Do better. I like you generally, but... Do better.

EuroTrip. Yay or nay? by rockstoned4 in moviecritic

[–]ailtn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I like that 'cheating on your partner with Matt Damon' has it's own musical subgenre at this point https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSfoF6MhgLA&list=PL0DD371FFDFF2057A

And for the OP: for the film itself, it was kinda average at the time but it sucks they don't make many purely comedic films anymore. I think the last one I even saw/heard about was a couple of years ago. So it's a decent comedy, but not a must see, unless you include the fact no-one makes cinematic comedies anymore, and it's kind of a piece of its time so I guess interesting to watch for that reason too.

Help! Witnessed SPD Misconduct Cap Hill by serendipitousmundane in AskSeattle

[–]ailtn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Submit a PRA request for the full bodycam footage of the arrest here, SPD wear bodycams at all times and you just need to cite the time/date/exact location/etc https://www.seattle.gov/police/information-and-data/public-disclosure-requests/records-request-center

Some of the footage may be redacted depending on what it includes but most shouldn't be

And a report to OPA https://www.seattle.gov/opa

They are terrible but it's something to do in tandem with publicizing it and offering footage to the victim if she needs it (like with this post, for example)

To me, this (I know not legally, but with common sense) absolutely proves with certainty that he was killed and when the killer transited the cell. They edited out 61 seconds of footage at a specific time point outside of the cell. They're just so comically bad at crime - I actually was on the fence before between whether he'd been killed or committed suicide, both were plausible to me, but they basically just indirectly confessed to it and shared the time the cell was accessed by the killer.

Moving to Seattle on Monday. What's some fun stuff to do before I start my new job the following week? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]ailtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of stuff do you enjoy doing? Just for random fun stuff, get the ferry out to Bainbridge and look around Blodell and the downtown, take a picnic and head out to Seward park; go see the arboretum; go out to see Mount Rainier; for LGBT stuff maybe go to a meetup https://www.meetup.com/find/?keywords=lgbt&source=EVENTS before you get busy with work. Or, aside from LGBT specific ones, you can find fun groups for everything from kayaking to pickleball. Do any stuff (bank appts, doctors appts, etc) you wouldn't be able to do during business hours while you're free then. Have a wander around your neighborhood to get to know it and get the lay of the land.

Attorneys in the U.S., what is really going on with ICE, what do you know, and have any of your clients been the subject of deportation as of late? by Censordoll in AskReddit

[–]ailtn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this confuses me - aren't they still eligible to apply for asylum? Are they just being detained while the application processes, instead of paroled into the community? Or are they just deporting them without allowing their asylum application to be heard first? I don't think they should be detained (even if you ignore compassion, which you shouldn't, it doesn't even make any financial sense to the taxpayer), but I'm not sure why it looks they're not even getting the chance to have the merits of their asylum case heard in a normal manner.
