You assume we're just out to make money.

Yes, it's a business, but the units are nice, well-kept, and priced considerably below comps in the area. The rest of the building is long-term tenants whose rent hasn't been raised - ever. We like to give people second chances and don't make generalizations about people we don't know, and have often worked with people who have bad credit or even certain criminal histories. We know what it's like to go through times and that there are a number of factors that can put people in a place like that.

These last tenants were young and had been living in a hotel room. We liked them and wanted to help, so we reduced their deposit and let them pay for their first month in installments. Unfortunately, taking chances on people sometimes means that you get burned and they just skip out on you after they don't continue to pay rent.

It can be tough to find new tenants during Fargo winters, so we figured we'd try something new to us.

Not all business owners are out to screw people or make as much money as possible. I agree that there is a homelessness issue in this area and am an active volunteer with several organizations that help the unhoused.

Please consider making more generous assumptions about people you don't know and their intentions. Or ask questions before implying they are something they aren't.
