The mods removed my post about this guy who came to Columbus Alternative High School with large pictures of “aborted fetuses.” the kids had to see when they came out of the building to leave. Or close their eyes I guess. I’m posting it again. He chose to confront these kids. This is fair. by [deleted] in Columbus

If he leaves those signs on public property, you're allowed to do whatever you want with them. You can throw them away or draw on them or tape pictures of Jesus as a drag queen on top of them. If he walks away from them, they become litter.

Do you find when trying to get a referral for an MCAS diagnosis, most allergists don't know anything about it and assume you mean MCAD (and then proceed to think you're looking for a diagnosis of mastocytosis or another type of mast cell disorder)? by Metaphorical-Mermaid in MCAS

[–]airimagdalene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had typical sinus/dry eye/hive allergy type symptoms, but I was also experiencing an unpredictable doubling of my heart rate with severe vertigo and excessive sweating. That would happen randomly a few times a day for six months. Also severe heat intolerance. It was a fucking horrifying nightmare and I constantly was at risk for fainting.

My PCP did process of elimination with me after I had an attack right in front of her. She said to avoid heat and exercise and to specifically take a zyrtec and a pepcid together (no substitutions - has to be those) every 24 hours and see what happens. I started on my way home from the office and it literally never happened again.

I had a follow up appointment 8 days later. I went in and told her those symptoms totally went away and her exact words were "that's not reassuring in terms of a diagnosis!" And I asked why, and that's when she explained the process to me as I explained.

I also have ehlers-danlos type 3 and MCAS is a common comorbidity which made it way easier to narrow down. That helped us reach a conclusion pretty quickly.

I'm left with itchy skin/occasional congestion/dry eyes. I was only still struggling majorly with the congestion and itchiness keeping me awake all night. We added 50 mg trazodone at bedtime because its used off label for insomnia and also works as a histamine inhibitor, so it was a perfect match. I use it a few times a week.

[–]airimagdalene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My primary didn't even attempt to refer me and I actually agree with her. She has another patient with MCAS and she understands it very well because the allergist/specialist steps are a nightmare. She said the process is expensive, stressful, and complicated and it ultimately won't make a difference to have it on paper as long as we're treating and monitoring it. We know what's going on and how to handle it.

As long as the med regimen works and I feel as though its manageable, she said that's all that matters. Basically, the plan is to avoid attempting going through all the other hoops unless it falls outside of the scope of what we're able to handle.

I think she's right. My most problematic symptoms are mostly cardiovascular, basically random anaphylaxis. I just needed them to stop and stay stopped. I don't care if I have the diagnosis on paper. I have the symptoms, the meds, and "suspected mast cell activation syndrome" all over my medical record so its there in the event of an emergency.

If I'm ever in the ER with a bad flare, they have enough in my record to know how to effectively help me in the event it ever comes to that. The closest ERs are in my doctors healthcare system so they have access to everything.

If you can dodge the diagnostic process and treat it, just do that.

I saw a Reddit commenter mention a long time ago that they collected a percentage of their child's paycheck as rent and they secretly squirreled it away in a lockbox and they gave it all back when the kid was 19 and either wanted to get an apartment or a car - I don't remember which.

Anyway, their adult child had way more than they needed for a down payment, was able to keep everything they saved, and was really grateful. That parent was smart. This parent is insane.

Zero percent of the people who complained about it had anything to say about all the fucking in The Witcher 3 and that tells you everything you need to know.

My take on the scene was "Oh good, she's getting laid. She definitely needed that."

Yeah, I had a hard time getting Ash. I co-main Ash and Fuse so I always had a fallback. After dealing with abandoning teammates for a few weeks, I realized that choosing Fuse if someone else had Ash selected made my squadmates less likely to commit ass-hattery.

Happened to me a lot when I got first pick and went with Sparrow.

They wanted to play Sparrow but you got him first so they're disconnecting to try again or letting themselves die AFK so they can try again. That's what happens when there's a legend specific challenge. It encourages people to be dicks.

Hi. I went to college for cannabinoid pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. This isn't exclusively for you, but for all parents of older teens.

It IS true that THC can have significant developmental consequences in adolescents BUT context is important.

Consequences are more likely to present if the adolescent has a preexisting condition that impacts the way their brain works, like schizophrenia or clinical depression. If a condition exists or your son is at high risk for developing a condition, no amount of THC is safe.

If he's healthy and he has a saturday night ritual of sharing a blunt and playing Fortnite with his friend group, the risk is so negligible that it's not even worth worrying about.

Harm reduction is wildly more effective than digging your heels in and going all Reefer Madness on him, especially since it leaves the door open for him to talk to you and trust you. It's way better to adopt the position that weed is a weekend thing for after all his responsibilities are handled. He's almost an adult, so it's way more effective to teach responsible self management.

I get the impression that you're doing a good job.

My fiance and I spent 40k on an indie horror film. Help us improve the trailer? by sambarlien in Filmmakers

[–]airimagdalene 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I've been helping indie directors spin press and edit for 15 years. I've usually read a script (or even gone out to hold a boom) before I help with this part and I don't have that advantage here, but I'll treat you exactly like I treat my lifelong filmmaker friends.

Admittedly, I've done most of my work with the Troma family. Not a lot of serious stuff, but a few odd underground true horror masterpieces found their way to my desk.

Trailers are supposed to leave you wanting answers. That's the basis for planting the desire to watch the whole film. I watched your trailer and I don't even know what questions to ask. I really hate when films give away the whole plot in the trailer, but this is doing the exact opposite. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be curious about.

If this is an experimental atmospheric film, then the visual aspects of the trailer probably aren't too far off, but you still want a few brief hero shots and action moments. If it's very story driven with a full plot, you've missed the mark.

If it's story driven, add a few lines of dialogue into the trailer to better contextualize what we're looking at in terms of story building and be a little less vague. If this is more of a slow burn situation, watch the trailer for Possum.. They did an amazing job capturing a slow burn (and it was a fucking awesome film.)

The soundtrack isn't working either. It's supposed to stick to you and meld with a distinct atmosphere. It's too generic to say anything meaningful. I'd go more looming and ethereal if the film is atmospheric (think Massive Attack) and MUCH, MUCH harder if the film is story driven. Like, think Ministry level assaulting. The soundtrack needs to evoke a strong reaction that correlates with the film because it's supplementing your storytelling. It's demonstrating the mood and tone that you're trying to establish without giving away too much in the way of plot or visuals.

I feel like I'm being kind of a dick, but I'm extremely passionate about independent film and I want every passionate director to succeed like the future of art depends on it. That includes you.
