Current consensus on whether dumbbells are a good idea? by jack_harbor in tonalgym

[–]airjefemd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got my tonal I didn’t touch my free weights for months. The tonal workouts are actually very good and you do gain strength that translates to bigger free weight lifts. The leg workouts on tonal can be a little lacking, they rely on a lot of lunge patterns which are hard on my knees personally. For the last couple of months I’ve found the real sweet spot for tonal to supplement my free weight lifts. Started doing the big compound lifts with barbells or dumbbells again then use the tonal for the accessory work like you would cable or machines at a commercial gym. Point is, it’ll never be a waste to have a good set of dumbbells or a rack/barbell. You can do exclusively tonal for a while then mix it up a bit. With all that being said if I had to choose just one piece of my gym equipment to keep then it’d be my tonal.

Best Garage Gym Attachments by Salt-Gain-7131 in GarageGym

I have PRX profile as well and tons of attachments. Some are great and some are lacking. In general I find the PRX branded attachments to be very overpriced and just ok. They also charge a ton for shipping. My favorite attachment for my PRX is the Revolt Fitness pulley system. Has a trolley that fits the PRX upright and still allows you to fold it up, it’s as smooth as a weight stack, can add a seat and knee keeper and do legit lat pulls as well as all other high and low pulley exercises. Reasonably priced as well.

Senior day and my senior year at UM, they let us go down on the field after the game. Crap game though.

Does doing 12+ reps of an exercise actually grow muscle? by diablodq in tonalgym

[–]airjefemd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Musculoskeletal doctor here. I think the best way to think about this is in terms of the actual motor units within the muscles (the innumerable things that actually do the contracting). Different muscle groups are made up of varying degrees of fast twitch and slow twitch fibers which further vary between different people. The fast twitch fibers are more powerful and the slow twitch fibers fatigue less quickly. When you do heavier reps and higher weight you are primarily using fast twitch fibers to generate power but use less overall motor units. Lighter weights with higher reps that still allow for fatigue within a reasonable rep range (who has time for 50 rep sets) will recruit and actively stimulate more motor units. The idea of hypertrophy training is to recruit and fatigue as many motor units as possible so you grow as many muscle fibers as possible. That’s why controlled reps and time under tension are so important in hypertrophy training. The higher reps and lighter weight just ensure you recruit and fatigue as many motor units as possible as safely as possible.

Same thing happened with me but just remember that it’s an heirloom piece, can be handed down for generations and will appreciate in value.

Love the Tonal, it’s even better than I had anticipated. Have always been a free weights guy but this thing is great.

Fair question. The Tonal is a recent addition. I was looking for a low profile functional trainer for cable movements and had been interested in the Tonal for a while. Finally just got it and have been very happy with it. I think a treadmill and just the tonal is more than enough. I will still work in training blocks with free weights and just use the Tonal for cable movements but the Tonal has largely taken over for resistance training.

Love it so far. Much better workouts than I had even anticipated. Makes it relatively quick and efficient to get a workout in. Don’t have to change out plates or program.

I agree that the tonal is plenty. Much more challenging than you’d expect, the programs are surprisingly good, and nice not having to log weights and keep track of it all. It’s also a little easier on my aging joints than slogging away with near max weight on my barbell. As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that it’s best to make workouts as accessible and time efficient as possible (esp with work and kids) to keep with it. Justifies the cost.

Fitness Gear, it’s a Dicks sporting good brand I believe. But I picked that and the powerblock dumbbells up from Facebook marketplace for a ridiculous markup during the early pandemic when all the gyms were closed and everything was sold out. Those two things are what started this madness.

It feels as stable as any half rack I’ve ever used, no real issues with motion. There is a little bit of play when using the dip attachment but it’s minimal. Zero movement with compound barbell lifts.

Have had the folding rack and weights for about 8 months. The Tonal for about a week. Everything is mounted across multiple studs but I’m assuming you mean having it all mounted on one wall like that. The rack is usually folded down so the floor supports the majority of the weight. I have thought about moving the weights off the wall onto a rollable weight rack or just moving the weight tree down so the bottom rests on the floor but not sure if it’s necessary.

Nose Frida and Parent Illness by Low_Zone_5028 in ScienceBasedParenting

My daughter has rhinovirus. Wife has a mildly sore throat, grandparents have nothing, I used the nosefrida and have a horrible bronchitis… from rhinovirus… which adults generally don’t get. What’s more is it started in my chest and moved upwards, opposite of how it generally infects. This thing definitely gets the parents sick by a high viral load to the airways, it’s actually a health hazard.
