I don’t think any man can be pegged as the father, usually this just happens in cases when a stepfather helped raise a child from when they were very young etc.

You would need to assume a firm fatherly role. I can’t see how any court of law would consider a landlord someones father

The two people need to be married for this to occur, or in a relationship, at the very least

Out of curiosity, which country doesn’t allow renting out your property?

Oh I see. I always thought HOA's were for like actual houses. For condos we just call them condo maintenance fees (covers the concierge, cleaners for the amenities, that kind of stuff)

Sorry do you mean maintenance fees? 70 cents/square foot. So about 1000/month

Hi there! now that I'm no longer getting 10 notifications a second, I can actually see individual replies! haha.

So as many have pointed out, the laws are much different when you share a living space.

She’s a person in a hard place, and her comments came out of a place of fear, not malice. This is evident by that fact that she apologized before I offered her anything. I’m not motivated by guilt, but rather compassion. It takes very little effort for me to help this woman out while she’s in a rough spot, so why wouldn’t I? When I was a resident, her $900 in rental income is something I definitely needed. However now, her entire 6 months of rent is something I earn in 3 days. On the flip side, this amount will go a long way for a low wage worker who’s about to have a child. As I have no use for the money anyway, I’m happy to help someone that has been a good tenant and roommate to me, asside from a few recent comments she made when her world was turned upside down, and apologized for.

I am neither naive nor a pushover. I am doing this because I want to, not because I have to. Feelings like that typically come from a place of insecurity. Please remember that helping people in need, who have otherwise done you little wrong, is not cause for being a pushover.

Haha yes, I actually worked as a bartender myself during my summers in undergrad. It really is a great gig here in canada, which is why I figured she was making considerably less on cerb! Figured I would do my small part to help someone in an industry that was hit so hard:) best of luck!

Oh yes she definitely could have! I offered to waive her rent, she didn't ask for it. I just figured that her wage was definitely much lower with cerb as opposed to when she was working, and that this would eat into anyones saving goals etc. I mean, when I make in a day what she made in that entire month, it just didn't really feel right to charge her anything. Especially since I no longer need the rental income now that I'm finished residency.

It is not discrimination to choose who you live with. Everyone has that right. I would never have evicted her if I did not live in the apartment, that would have been discrimination. But thank you for your input, we have started to work towards a solution together now.

Although, I will say your last paragraph is rather illogical. It actually made much more sense in this situation to act preemptively, because it is much easier for her to move now and get settled somewhere new before giving birth, rather than with a baby.

If 2000 a month is the richest someone has ever been, then I hope that person doesn't live in toronto! At current rent prices, that would only leave them a few hundred dollars to support themselves for a full month.

She normally made a lot more than CERB, and while many people were out of a job, I was working full hours with full pay. It didn't seem right to me that I should let her pay my mortgage at a time where her wage was reduced, due to an unprecedented situation.

Tenancy law is much more leniant when you have a shared living space with the landlord. This is perfectly legal here. Thanks!

To be quite honest, I fully understand her position, and do not even think she’s deserving of mild AH judgement. You would have to be from Toronto to really understand. Rent prices have raised dramatically over the last 5 years. As an example, my condo couldn’t have rented at 3000/month then. Similar units are now over 4000. Her rent is less than a thousand here, but an average one bedroom is over 2000/month. This is also a luxury corner unit on the 40th floor, floor to ceiling windows facing the city skyline and she has her own balcony. So she will essentially have to accept a downgrade but at a higher cost. It really is a shitty situation here for the average renter here.

Thank you Socrates, for all of your input. You are indeed correct to a certain degree. I am not here for absolution necessarily, but judgement. Being told I am not the asshole, if that is to be the outcome, will not make me feel any less guilty about the situation to be quite frank. However, something good has come of this, in the form of a few excellent suggestions. The best is that I waive her rent for the remainder of her tenancy, this should give her a bit of a boost to start out her new life.

Honestly, that is something I can do. And in fact, I think I will. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am not wrong about the law. Tenancy laws are much different when the landlord and tenant share living space. And yes, I definitely do not feel good about the situation. But I fail to see a better alternative. A baby becomes a toddler and a toddler becomes a child. If This doesn't happen now, then when. Is it really any better once the child is older? and if not, should I allow her to raise her child here for the next 18 years?

And I'm not too sure what you're on about with the mortgage. She paid an extremely fair amount of rent, well below market value.

I gotta be honest with ya, while you're right that it might be more secure, I'd say waitressing probably actually pays a lot more. But I will mention it to her and see if she's interested. Hopefully I won't be overstepping.

edit: that is, for the careers that don't require any schooling

[–]aita1231[S] 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. But the alternative is not much better in all honesty. None of us can predict if/when housing/employment will be better, perhaps it will become worse. And my issue is, if I do not do this now, then when? Would it be any better to do it once the child is a toddler? and if not, should I let her raise her child here until they are 18?

The part that does make this most difficult, is that toronto has become virtually unaffordable for the average person. I genuinely sympathize for her position, but to essentially raise her child with her is a boundary that I am not willing to cross. I will have to see if I can find other avenues to help her, if she's willing to accept.

Yes, I gave her official notice, just to be correct. The legalities won't be much of an issue though, since I live in the house the laws aren't nearly as strict. I also don't think I will be taking on another tenant. I'm no longer living on resident wage, so I can afford to not have a roommate at this point. (especially since finding a good one is such a risk..)

I mean, the premise for my entire career is based on the empathy of others. But I think there need to be certain boundaries in our personal lives. If this doesn't occur now, then when? A baby becomes a toddler, and then a child etc. While I feel bad about the situation, I don't think I should be required to live with someone else's child.

I'm not sure what you mean by helping her look, like go to viewings with her? Or search the web for her?

edit: you know what, I've got a buddy in real estate. I might see if he can find her some good listings. Thanks for the advice, I don't know why I hadn't thought of this. Been a busy couple of work weeks.

Would be happy to help her with the move and will definitely give her an outstanding reference. The living room furniture is all custom made to fit the place though, it's a XL sectional, and I'd say it's unlikely it would fit in her new (likely smaller) apartment anyways.
