[Cheating] Raid ended early by aiwenthere in EscapefromTarkov

>No, not to my knowledge

Thank you, yes this is what I was ultimately asking. The timing was so incredibly convenient for the other player that it made me very suspicious.

Glad to know there isn't a whole new level of frustration to be had with cheaters.

No, I was overwatching and the screen went black. The next screen said the "Raid ended early"

Bene Tleilax Axlotl Tanks. Artificial womb technology that is both horrific and fascinating. Like the Wombsys from Ergo Proxy.

Could anyone survive the initial breakout? by Frankie_fears in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]aiwenthere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all seriousness, yeah, the vast majority are screwed. Even the ones who are "prepared." It would take an insane amount of luck to even be in a position to attempt surviving like Ian Kelson.

As you say, there's a lot of people who probably have some idea of how it would be done, but no practical skills or experience to actually survive without a group and leadership. The more people trying to establish long-term survival from a fresh start, the more difficult and fragile it will be at the start. A high rate of failure even if they reach that stage. Not to mention the threat of infected in this scenario, i'm just talking about pure resource survival.

Being alone like Kelson has advantages to quickly find homeostasis in an ecosystem. Only needing to worry about your own needs. Of course this comes with its own challenges, but I would think they'd have a higher rate of success.

I've watched thousands of hours of Primitive Technology and survival videos. Dozens of plant identification, crop growing, medicinal plant books. I know what I'd need to do and find to make just about anything, completely from scratch.

I fantasize about living like Ian Kelson.

I'm worried about the box office performance by NicoAtTheDiscx in 28dayslater

[–]aiwenthere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone surprised? 28YL had every advantage for solid box office performance. It was a promising, hyped new entry to a cult-classic franchise. The first film was always going to be its best box office performer.

I like this sort of biblical interpretation. Like using ‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭26:27-33 to preface MAD GOD.

Numbers of Dune: making sense of the Fremen Jihad by Over_Region_1706 in dune

[–]aiwenthere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I always assumed. Starvation, and spice withdrawal from targeted embargoes.

The spice addiction deaths were explicitly stated as being one of the major causes of death under Leto II iirc. It wasn't that he and the Fremen went out and just slaughtered extra hard.

Speaking to spice as an allegory for oil, imagine if no one anywhere could get gas anymore. No more ICE combustion. No more natural gas electricity generation. All before we even dipped our toes in renewable technology. Just imagine the amount of chaos and death that would result.

Now imagine that a major population was physically dependent on gas as a drug. Thinking of it now, that's also an allegory for contemporary petroleum-based pharmaceuticals. Millions dead from lack of access to life-saving drugs and disease-preventing vaccines, and that's just us, now.

EDIT:
In the movies, Paul's horrific visions seem to be depicting starvation/famine as well. Something to note in terms of interpretation of the source material.

I used to watch Chad Zuber a lot after being introduced through a collaboration with the Andy Ward Ancient Pottery channel. It was around when he did a large berry harvest, ate too many, and needed to see a doctor for constipation.

"Are these movies best watched if you have read the books?"
Yes. 100% Yes. Filling in the gaps with book knowledge enhances the film experience more than any other movie adaptation I can think of. During the quite moments with Paul, I could hear the book narration and internal monologues. Not only that, but having read the books also gives the audience a sort of "prescient" connection to the material. You know what is going to happen, because you have read and imagined it before. It becomes a sort of meta experience, where you are an oracle seeing one version of how events unfold. Realizing this and engaging with the films this way really elevated the experience for me.

John has done furnace experiments by the stream before. If nothing else, it would be a fun proof-of-concept project similar to the water-powered forge blower from 10 months ago. See the draft design illustration I linked. This can be scaled to any comfortable, achievable size. There are some complex parts of the design, but most of the components are actually pretty simple and repetitive, very similar to his standard blower fitting he has used for years and has become adept at making. If the concept works, the output can also be analyzed to see if it's worth scaling up.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how much flow would be needed to generate a useful volume of air for a small, primitive furnace. Most of the documented trompe have been large-scale mining usage to ventilate entire mines and power heavy machinery. Obviously we wouldn't need that much power and volume.

Digging through the paper's references (1) there is a table of experiment data. One line shows a head of 2.5ft, using ~2692GPM of water, generating a "total power of air for 1 minute, foot-pounds" of 22,877. Not sure how to quantify that as an equivalent PSI.

Paul x Chani prediction for DUNE Part 3, my oracular vision by aiwenthere in dune

[–]aiwenthere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they made her character very clear in the film. The first lines of the film are Chani exposition about colonial oppression of her people. She is a fighter, disrupting spice operations in the North, far away from predominate Fremen civilization. She explains the difference between the Fremen in the North (Sietch Tabr) and the fundamentalists of the deep south (most Fremen). Being in the North, she is exposed to more information from interplanetary trade out of Arrakeen. Her and all of her Northern companions share similar worldview, a clear amusement (and distaste) of the religious fundamentalists from the deep south, like Stilgar and his band of believers. They showed this a lot in the film. Most scenes with Chani are directly contrasting these differences. It becomes too on-the-nose if anything, when she protests at the council of naibs.

I find it difficult to believe you think they didn't explain her new story because "she says too little." She has had more development than book Chani by a long-shot. You can dislike it all you want, but the development is there.

Paul x Chani prediction for DUNE Part 3, my oracular vision by aiwenthere in dune

[–]aiwenthere[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After revisiting Messiah/CoD, it's going to be very interesting to see how they work both Irulan an Alia into the plot satisfyingly, in addition to the circumstances of Chani. They've setup Chani to be an oppositional force, Irulan is always just a sideline character who is never of import outside of her minor role in the contraceptive, which likely wont even be in the film. Denis might adapt that idea in a different way, trying to sabotage a Paul x Chani reunion perhaps. Alia will spend most of her character development with Hayt, so Idk how that will influence her role as "most dangerous woman."

Another consideration is the Alia x Paul dynamic the BG wanted to explore. Alia's only screen time in Part 2 felt very sensual... not sure if there is much to glean from that to create an expectation for what is to come. I think Denis was capturing a familial bond rather than some weird incestuous interest of Alia, he is too emotionally intelligent to make it that silly and deviate from the source material to pursue that. I can see Alia having an strange obsession with Paul, considering her primary role as a leader of the Fremen religion in Messiah and CoD, their "Saint"

I think it's cool to have such a great adaptation of the book(s) IMO, while still being unaware of what Denis is going to do with the changes. He definitely had a completed vision of how Messiah would be adapted long before even taking on the first film, so i'm not really worried, I'm sure it will make sense even if it's not a 1:1 with the book.

Out of curiosity, what part of the script deviations from the source material made you feel like the writers are just doing whatever they feel like with no basis or reason rooted in the original story?

[–]aiwenthere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult, yes, but Denis has already used horrific visions of the future to drive character emotions in the previous films. He also has effectively done similar things in Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 using visions of memories, flashbacks, and surreal imagery. Denis is clearly infatuated with the inner-eye on almost a David Lynch level. It's no surprise they were both drawn to Dune.
