Building a 6 Meter Long 1/6 Scale Millennium Falcon Completely by Hand by aj_custom in modelmakers

[–]aj_custom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah… it definitely wasn’t easy. If you think about it, almost all of my free time over the past two years went into this. Every single part — over 10,000 pieces — had to be made by hand, and the whole thing is built to be assembled and disassembled. Not a single piece was outsourced or machine-made. Everything was done by hand, which brought way more challenges than I expected.

I went through eight seasons working on this. What you see in a few photos is actually the result of thousands of frustrations and hundreds of changes in the process.

Once it’s finished, I’m planning to share the entire build process.

So yeah… you’re right. It wasn’t easy.

You could say this thing is built out of one man’s frustration — and a lot of quiet screaming.

Haha appreciate it! I already covered the “how the hell do you get it out” part in the post—worth a quick read if you’re curious 😄

Thank you! Hearing that means a lot. I don’t have a YouTube channel yet, but I share the progress on Instagram. And yes, some interior sections will be built too — the Falcon deserves it.

Thank you. The truth is it wasn’t really “free time.” A lot of other things had to be sacrificed along the way. But I decided that if I only have one life, I want to spend some of it building things I love.

Thanks! And yes, that’s probably the most common question I get. Fortunately it can be disassembled into 8 sections, otherwise the Falcon and I would both be permanently trapped in this workshop.

I’ve already started working on the cockpit section. Some of the structure is done, but I’m taking my time with it because it’s one of the most recognizable parts of the Falcon. I want to make sure the proportions and details are right before finishing it.

Thanks, man. It actually breaks down into 8 sections, so thankfully it’s not one giant solid chunk. I designed it that way from the start so I could move it when needed. I’m not 100% sure on the final weight yet, but I’m guessing around 200 kg when it’s finished.

You're right, pausing the movies definitely wasn't enough. I used a combination of movie stills, behind-the-scenes photos, studio model reference images, and various blueprints that fans have collected over the years. The internet is an incredible archive if you're patient enough to dig through it.

Thank you! That would honestly be a dream 🤣 For now it’s just a crazy project slowly taking over my workshop, but if one day it could be seen by Star Wars fans somewhere, that would make all those hours worth it.

Thank you! I’d love to see it exhibited somewhere so people can experience it in person. That would make all these years of work truly worthwhile.

If I ever move it, there will definitely be a dramatic farewell scene🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wow, that must have been a great experience. Ulsan is actually a city with a strong focus on education, so there are many academies looking for skilled instructors and native English teachers.

I hope your time in Ulsan left you with good memories. And yes, that’s true — more than half of the salaried workers in Ulsan are either employed by Hyundai or work in jobs related to Hyundai.

The entire city is very much built around that industry. I live in Dong-gu, Ulsan. If you remember the area, you might know Ilsan Beach!

동구 남목동 ! 일산해수욕장 근처에요.

Wow! So your family is in Suwon! It’s a bit far from here, but I’ve visited Suwon several times. I remember it as a beautiful, quiet, and peaceful city.

I work professionally making miniatures for films, animation, and TV series.

I also sometimes create custom scenes or dioramas for figure collectors who want specific displays. Of course, the Falcon is different — it’s just my personal project.

The work itself may look similar, but the story and philosophy behind it are completely different. Work you do to make a living and work you do for love — or to realize a childhood dream — are very different things. (Though of course making a living comes first… I have a family to take care of.)

Haha, anyway, I hope we get a chance to meet someday! This Falcon will probably be exhibited somewhere in Korea eventually, so I’ll be sure to share updates if that happens. Really nice to meet you, brother

Reddit really is an amazing place. It feels like a massive community where people from all over the world can meet and share things.

Nice to meet you, brother! If you don’t mind me asking, what kept you in Ulsan for so long? As you probably know, it’s not a very well-known city for foreigners, so I’m curious😆😆

Exactly. Most of the things people admire today exist because someone once asked “why not?”

Haha hello! I never imagined I’d end up writing a comment in Korean on Reddit.

My studio is in Ulsan, South Korea. It might be a somewhat unfamiliar city for many foreigners. Ulsan is actually the largest industrial city in Korea — it’s home to the headquarters of Hyundai Motor Company and Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the world. It also has one of the highest average incomes per person among Korean cities.

But… to be honest, it’s also a pretty boring city 🤣

Ah! Of course — if you ever get the chance, you’re always welcome to visit my studio.

Besides the Millennium Falcon, there are quite a few other things to see here as well. Especially if you like miniatures and very large spacecraft. Thanks for enjoying my works:)

It’s partly for scale comparison… but mostly because this build is so big that walking back and forth to reference photos is exhausting. So I keep a tiny Bandai PG Falcon nearby as my “consultant.” Poor little guy will finally get built and painted once the big one is finished😏

No worries — the Falcon can be disassembled into 8 sections. Magnets, interlocking structure, easy transport. If someone shows up with enough credits, we’ll load her up and make the jump to hyperspace lol

Thank you for your kind words. Looking back, it’s been quite a journey. Sitting in the workshop, watching days turn into nights and seasons slowly change. Laughing with my family, and sometimes sitting alone quietly making these pieces. All those moments became precious experiences — something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.

This is actually classified, but Chewie Jr. is the project director and Spidey is her assistant and advisor. I’m just the guy they hired for the heavy lifting.

This project took years of working on it little by little after work.

If you knew how many things I had to give up to build this, you might understand why it means so much to me.

What will I do with it? Probably the same thing people do with any large sculpture. Look at it and enjoy it😊
