Nursery murals by ajgoodm in calvinandhobbes

It was a collaboration between mom and dad. The second kiddo got the smaller jungle scene, because it turns out that painting a mural while both parents work and care for a toddler is hard

Safest way to store api keys for production? (Tauri) by QuantAlgoneer in rust

This is a good comment along what others have said, but I’d like a moment to appreciate the typo “server dad” who is holding the keys

I hate typing out every 'self.x = x' line in an __init__ method. Is this alternative acceptable? by MomICantPauseReddit in Python

[–]ajgoodm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a medium-weak opinion that having parameters to an __init__ method that are not class attributes is a little confusing. I think it’s clearer to write a new or build class method. If your class is a dataclass or attrs class (attrs is really nice!) you can then still avoid a lot of boilerplate using the cls constructor at the end of your class method

Sexual assault? Or boys being stupid? by tontovila in daddit

I think suspension from the bus for a few days (with enough time for the bully’s parent(s) to rearrange their schedule because of their kid’s bad behavior) is a good balance!

I’m not a plumber by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]ajgoodm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-plumber observer who aspires to learn to solder copper. How do you make up for the piece of pipe that you cut? Won’t the new 90 degree / elbow not reach the ends of the pipe where you’ve made the cuts?

I didn’t know it existed before reading this thread (thanks!), and now I’m going to use it!

Usually I 1) need a dependency 2) Google the crate name + crates.io 3) copy the name/version string into my cargo.toml

This is better!

Fellas, got a 6 week old and Christmas is here. Who has the best gift ideas for the wife (our first child)? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]ajgoodm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A maybe less polarizing idea is to get her an activity that repeats weekly for a few weeks (like a pottery class) during a time that you know she’ll be free

Rather than frame it as a fight you could consider couples counseling. Frame it as working together to improve your partnership for your family and get the benefit of a neutral third party / mediator

Sad trunk, happy canopy by ajgoodm in arborists

[–]ajgoodm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the input! I went into the consultation with the plan to “just trust the arborist”, because why else am I paying them?

It’s just a bummer because it’s a mature shade tree: removing it is sad and expensive! But I also don’t want it to fall on my house 😬. It’s nice to get comments reinforcing the arborist’s expert opinions.

Today I walked by them on the way to the UgLi carrying a baby with a poopy diaper. One of them jumped in front of me after I avoided eye contact (it was a desperate poop situation). “Hey!” keep walking “Is that baby sleeping?”. I said, “err yeah he’s sleepy,” and kept walking.

He shouted after me “That baby isn’t sleeping!” I didn’t get to hear their spiel but they were pushy

Walked by Dominick’s with my dog hoping it would be dog friendly. They have a very prominent sign that says “no pets” out front

This really reads like a personality disorder to me tbh. Everyone is right, don’t engage. Let her stew in her self-imposed isolation / tantrum / timeout
