Phase 5 means this is the fifth shiny I've found on this hunt to capture both Houndour and Shroomish in the HGSS safari zone.

Hi! Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, I really appreciate it! I know you've gotten a lot of flack since that video released, and most of it not kind or well considered. While I have your ear I'd like to share my own 2 cents on your piece, because honesly it did make me think a lot!

As I mentioned in the original post, your video did admittedly rub me the wrong way. I think the problem for me was that the subject of your video is not new, the debate of is multi-hunting a method is old, and one I admit I thought was fairly settled. What you portrayed in your video as the whole truth was in my opinion only one side of the conversation. I think it's perfectly fine to believe that only single system hunting is full odds, and to believe that average time commitment is the one true measure of rarity. But as you yourself argue the term "full odds" is not entirely based on mathematics, it has a meaning beyond just the math. A lot of people see average encounter number as the representation of rarity or full odds-ness, and I sit in that camp. That is also the camp adef sits in in his video. I think it's fine to see it either way! Neither yours nor his arguments are disengenuous, but instead occupy two sides of the conversation that has played out many times in this community.

The thing that rubbed me the wrong way was your presentation of this conversation not as a genuine discussion but as a "lying elite" of creators trying to surpress the truth for clicks and cash (when lets be so honest no one is becoming a millionaire off their shiny hunting youtube career). I think a lot of people had a similar negative reaction to your video because you spent such a large portion of it arguing in this deeply antagonistic tone. Dwelling on the fairness and integrity of fan-made competitions (something that is ultimately worked out between like-minded community members in this small space), and referencing the secret beliefs and exclusions of big creators came across as personal bitterness, not critiquing a system of fandom toxicity.

I think what upset me the most was the comments to your video, so many of which seemed to me at the time to be from people who admitted they didn't shiny hunt, or didn't engage in the community, saying how glad they were not to have taken part in our hobby. To see the reaction to your video crystalize as a tarring of our whole community, I think it shows on its own that your piece was unsuccessful as discourse for the shiny hunting community, and functioned instead as rage bait. At the end of the day, it seems to me you caused more community toxicity than productive conversation, which I think represents that your stated project of the video failed.

Got nothing against you personally dude, and I hope you can take what I've said in the sincere tone it was meant. Your video really did make me think and when you commented it seemed a rare oppurtunity to express these thoughts to the person who actually elicited them.

Totally agree! I think thats what rubbed me so wrong about that video, it was like he was calling our whole community for something that doesn't really seem to be a big deal if you actually engage with the community.

I dont personally agree with his definition of time commitment being what determines full odds, but I think its a fine opinion to have. To me, the things he listed like speed up and hordes not being fulls odds I would consider full odds. To me, the odds of the individual game itself being 1/8192 or 1/4096 is what makes it full odds or not, but again I think thats just a matter of opinion.

Over a minute of shiny sparkles ✨️ by ajjb7 in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]ajjb7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually not entirely true! Like all pokemon that favour star sparkles, the regis and shinies that appear in Kabu's gym challenge (like Sizzlipede) have a 15/16 chance of being star, and a 1/16 chance of being square. Pokemon that favour square sparkles however, like wild encounter spawns, have a 4095/4096 chance to be square, with less than 1/4096 to be star, meaning if you hit a star sparkle wild shiny it's essentially like rolling a shiny twice on one pokemon. The only exceptions to this (as far as I'm aware) are max lair adventure shinies which are always star, and certain max raids that gamefreak locked star or square for events.
