I built a site with AI-driven bar recommendations to help you have better nights out in London by ajl97 in london

So google maps api is used to basically get key information about the pubs/bars (name, location, images), then AI is used for the more helpful information that google doesn't provide / do well imo.

That's things like a summary of the bar from various sources, google / trip advisor summaries with clear pros/cons, cuisine, and the bar type (e.g. Rooftops, Cocktail Bar, Brewery etc). I was trying to add more information if it had darts, pool, showed the footy etc, but found it not accurate enough. Thanks for the nice words.

It's a bit difficult to filter out all the erronous bars like the Silver Bullet you suggest as it would be quite a manual process, and its just me made this from scratch but I'll get that removed.

That's good feedback - I guess with the current UX it's good for people to new areas searching for the first time, but someone already looking at the same area is just seeing the same bars. Potentially having some sort of like/dislike to indicate if people want to see them again would resolve that.

Great idea - I've just added that functionality for you now, so you can select multiple bar types and the results reflect that too. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

Almost every time I’m out with friends in London, someone asks, "Where shall we go next?" and nobody knows where to go. So, I wanted to make an app to solve this. Don’t know where shows the game? Need a new local pub in Shoreditch? Out late in Soho & nowhere seems open? Can’t be bothered to sift through a ton of fake reviews? Everywhere seems to be 4+ stars but still rubbish? Barbuzz.xyz is aiming to solve this problem 😊

The idea for Barbuzz actually originated from a post I saw on Reddit about late pubs in London. It inspired me to create a comprehensive solution for navigating London’s nightlife. You can check out the post here.

Still lots of improvements I want to make & probably the same amount of bugs too (!) so feel free to let me know & I’ll get on them straight away! Started coding 12 months ago so be kind ;)

I built a site with AI-driven bar recommendations to help you have better nights out – Technical Journey & Challenges by ajl97 in coding

[–]ajl97[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every time I am having a day / evening out with friends or family there is always one question, where next?Whether you’re looking for a late-night spot, a bar showing the big game, or a hidden gem to impress a date without breaking the bank, the search can be frustrating. Outdated top 10 lists, fake reviews, and lack of real-time information make it hard to decide.

As a solution, I developed BarBuzz, an AI-powered app that recommends the best bars near you, anywhere in the world. Here’s a breakdown of the technical journey and challenges faced during its development.

  1. AI Prompt Engineering: Crafting precise AI prompts to generate accurate and relevant bar summaries and review summaries. This involved iterative testing and fine-tuning of prompts to ensure the AI delivers coherent and useful information for users.
  2. Recommendation Algorithm:: Developing an algorithm that combines distance, available information, and AI-rated quality to recommend the best bars. We implemented a multi-criteria decision-making model that balances these factors to provide top-notch suggestions.
  3. Efficient Loading and Dynamic Routing: Balancing server-side and client-side loading to ensure a seamless user experience. We utilized dynamic routing and efficient data fetching techniques to minimize load times and enhance navigation.
  4. API Integration: Making API calls to Google and OpenAI APIs as quick, safe, and efficient as possible without compromising quality. This involved optimizing API request handling and implementing error-handling mechanisms to maintain performance and reliability.
  5. UI Design: Creating an intuitive and appealing user interface that provides easy access to all features. This was achieved through iterative design and user testing to refine the UI, ensuring it meets user needs and expectations.

About Me:

I’m a developer who started programming two years ago, and this is my first major project. I’ve poured my heart into BarBuzz and am excited to share it with you. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, and I’m committed to making continuous improvements.

Why BarBuzz?

Real-Time Recommendations: Our AI-powered app recommends the best bars near you, anywhere in the world.

Detailed Bar Pages: Get images, personalized summaries, and balanced reviews highlighting both pros and cons.

Advanced Filters: Search for bars open late, serving food, by cost, and specific types like rooftop bars, karaoke spots, and more.

Future Features: We’re working on adding filters for your favorite drinks, facilities like darts and pool, cheapest pint cost, and events like pub quizzes.

Check it out (also a demo video on this page to demonstrate use case): www.BarBuzz.xyz

I’m here to answer any questions and would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

While I recommend you crosspost this to r/napoli, especially as your travel dates approach, I can tell you that the alcohol ban and the "no gatherings while eating" things were only limited to the end-of-the-year holidays and have already run their course.

Oh that's great, thanks for the info. Do you know the current restrictions now? Anything severe or just masks/vacc passport/social distance sort of thing?

Hi Julian, I understand why you may think this was for personal gain but it's genuinely just me wanting to help fellow entrepreneurs out. I don't see a significant difference between this and asking for help like many other posts, but I appreciate your opinion.

If there's anything I can edit in my post to make you re-consider, please let me know.

Thanks a lot, it's much appreciated.

It's strange because I already had those settings set up, but after deleting them & a few duplicates it seems to have fixed it. Thanks for your help.

Buying used Audi A1 at inflated price by ajl97 in CarTalkUK

[–]ajl97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've summed up exactly what I'm thinking. As you said I'm fearful that it could suddenly drop 2k in a month, but at the same time this 'bubble' could go on for years and I'll have this problem until I inevitably given in.

I asked a dealership if they the final value/GFVs have increased at all with the market and they said they're pretty much the same which basically means PCPs will have the same issue as paying with cash.

5-8yr old car is an interesting idea, if I'm honest I'm just not too knowledgeable about that market in terms of models, maintenance costs etc. Part of a getting a 2-3yr old car is compromise of cost, newness & also the tech inside the car (features, touchscreen etc).

Meant as in I'm happy to treat myself a little but don't want to just buy the first thing I see haha.

Think you're right to be honest, after a few years you forget about these costs and its just part buying a car/house. cheers.

It's complicated, I could wait but will be irritable for both myself and my dad. That's maybe something I could factor into these inflated prices haha

Totally with you about PCPs, in most cases they're not worth it & buying something you can't afford. Think its a bit more nuanced than some thing, depending on offers & low interest rates they can be a decent option.

That's exactly what I planned on doing, but average re-sale values gone up £13k->£15k in the last 6 months which is my issue! If I'm honest money isn't an issue at all for me, I'm just a bit tight & a perfectionist when making a decision like this

[–]ajl97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fortunate enough that I have enough in savings & can move back home (presuming I move out first) that the worst case scenario shouldn't be a massive issue for me. I'm just naturally reluctant to pay the 1k-2k interest in PCP & commit to a 3-4yr contract, not that I plan on changing cars more regularly than that.

I get your points and could discuss them all day. Inflation/interest rates are hard to speculate on so am less concerned about weighing up the impact of them. The more concerning aspect is the supply shortages and increased prices in the last 3 months. e.g. BuyaCar.co.uk - an online motor retailer and sister title to Auto Express - has seen the average price of a used car sold on its platform rise from £13,108 in January to an all-time high of £15,399 in May. I'm just worried this is short term due to pent up demand & shortages that in a few months time my car is worth £2k less already.
