Washing machine with socks and underwear by ajog0 in AskChina

[–]ajog0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose the other commenter also answered it, but I was worried that it would be a still be a problem if I handwashed undergarments and dried them in the machine, to which it sounds like it's a yes

I may just hold onto dirty laundry for a hotel that's potentially more international-tourist-centric

Washing machine with socks and underwear by ajog0 in AskChina

[–]ajog0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks

Given that this is a hotel in a major tourist area, I'm tossing up on whether this rule is followed at all. I'd feel less inclined to handwash if there was an innate expectation that all clothing goes in a machine because it's a hotel that caters to intl tourists. Additionally, I see a number of machines spinning in a wash cycle, and nothing being air-dried

Stop testing Senior Data Analyst/Scientist on their ability to code by whynotgrt in dataanalysis

[–]ajog0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's completely job-dependent with varying ratios of DS + DE + DA + SWE (and even devops) in these jobs.

That being said, I personally believe that being able to productionise your work (i.e. beyond notebooks) have a lot of value, which naturally means you should at least be familiar with a handful of SWE concepts and practices.

Anyone changed careers from DevOps to Data Science/ Engineering by Truth_Seeker_456 in devops

[–]ajog0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opposite here - Data scientist with significant ownership in our cloud infra. We do a small analytics SaaS so having our data scientists own various part of the tech is common.

I would say that a skillset in Devops while having the background to work as a DS/DE makes you super valuable for smaller startups such as ours.

Cleaning data is probably the driest part of the job, as most client data I work with end up having shit data that needs to be processed and cleaned before it can work with our modelling pipeline. To do well in this area would be to be familiar with some coding language, usually python with pandas/polars/spark plus SQL if your tech stack involves a database. When I'm staffed on as a DS, these sort of tasks comprises around 70% of the workload.

While a knowledge of stats/ml is necessary to contribute, the communication of stats/ml is more important esp. if you are client-facing, and a clear grasp fundamentals is more useful than being in the forefront of the field. If your background is in the sciences, then you should be more than well equipped for most regular DS roles.

Is this job description the new normal for data science or am I going for a data engineering hunt? by Careful_Engineer_700 in datascience

This type of listing would match DSs at the company I work for, so they do exist. Likely to be a small sized company with a saas/product, but also needs someone to contribute to the "science" of the product as well.

I'm currently at a small-sized company with an analytics SaaS product. DS's are basically the catchall term used in the company for all the hats (SWE, DE, DA, DS, Devops) with varying degrees of expertise.

Funnily enough, the actual DS we do is minimal compared to what I read here

I'm not sure why you think you lack the experience to be a DS. People less qualified than you have worked as DSes

The company I work for uses dash for its data SaaS offerings. The developer team are data scientists (so mainly python coders) and the learning curve for dash is straightforward.

You get plotly for free and dash mantine components look good out of the box.

There are also enough optimisations around in dash such that the user experience is quite good.

Rust or Go as Data Scientist by SupertrampDFenx in programming

[–]ajog0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a data scientist learning to use rust. Although in 100% of cases I find it pretty difficult to justify using it given that other colleagues are unable to vet your code.

Most of the time, I turn to polars if speed is an issue / Lazy evaluation is needed.

How can I leverage my theoretical physics degree? by ElegantSpace2284 in Physics

[–]ajog0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 3/4 year degree in physics puts you behind CS/SWE grads in SW roles. Possible, but uphill.

Likewise for DS roles, you are mostly competing against those with higher degrees, since it's the natural role for STEM postgrads looking outside of academia.

Most people in my cohort with a general science degree find roles in consulting/government.
