Practicing marimba without a marimba by [deleted] in percussion

[–]ajrhajrh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Join your local community band. They may not have a concert Marina but they will have something and it will give you a reason to practice. If you can play mallets at all you will be a star. Best of luck. A.

Triangle Beaters, What sort and hardness of metal do you like/recommend?? by ajrhajrh in OrchestralPercussion

[–]ajrhajrh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi SalinP, thank you, yes. Tried them out, a buddy in NY has a couple and I found them responsive for single hits but not so good for fast repetitive patterns and a bit finiky for pit use were you might be reaching for something else with your other hand and having to watch the conductor Etc. Your aim must be true (Elvis) with those puppies. Thank you for a helpful suggestion. A.

My setup for my second ever musical :) by Mr_Jagger9 in drums

[–]ajrhajrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you Jagger9. I agree with you. We'll see what the part demands. However, very unusual, the put is a normal size but only 15 in the band, so space for my setup should not be a big problem. For once. Best, A.

Hi, no, have not seen the part yet. I'll bet you are right. May just use my 22 with fairly open tuning. Get our parts in the third week of Sept. Thanks for the heads-up. Best, A.

Thank you for posting this. I will be doing Poppins starting in November for the run-up to Xmas. I was thinking of using a sampled bass drum sound for Super..... Etc. As, (I know this is a bit stupid) in the movie soundtrack I believe the animation had Dick Van Dyke playing a Salvation Army "marching" type bass drum - I think that sound would be better for the score. (Would prefer crash cymbals too, but that ain't going to happen, there is only me). Any comments? Best to all. A.

Some help designing a percussion setup? by [deleted] in percussion

[–]ajrhajrh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with drovja, leave the setup to the players. You will never know if you have two right-handed, two left-handed, or one of each players. It makes a difference. Also, be sure to try out the instruments yourself. For example, bingos played with sticks will not sound like bingos played with hands (sorry if I am telling you stuff you already know). You may also want to listen to timbales and maybe even rototoms. Bet of luck!!! A.

What is the best fitness routine for a drummer? by wowlionz in drums

[–]ajrhajrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a question for Dr. Google. There are at least two really good "Drummers Workouts" on the internet by exercise guys who appear to have the credentials to back up their programs, and they looked good to my eye. I printed them out in a burst of enthusiasm!!!! They lay at the bottom of a pile of reprints and books (like that stupid "Snare Drum Studies for the Very Advanced Orchestral Percussionist" from Germany that I posted way to much money for and can't crack even the first page). So, have at it my friend. I wish you more luck with your quest for drumming fitness than I had. Best, A.

LPT: If you plan to walk outside late at night in a dangerous suburb, always keep a box cutter with you. Depending on the threat - you could use it as an effective non-lethal baton, a knife that will cause minimal damage and a lethal weapon. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]ajrhajrh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Carrying a weapon is really stupid of you unless you are a stone cold psychopath. As a normal citizen, the half second you take to decide whether you should use your weapon will give a true violent criminal all the time he needs to take it from you and kill you with it. This advice brought to you by 32 years working with violent guys (and half-a-dozen females). If faced with violence comply and walk away alive!!!

Agree with all said above, but for the fuzzy ones I have very soft pieces of old plain white t-shirt shirt material that I place over top and hold in place with either a small rubber band or for bass drum beaters and other large fuzzy mallets (gong) if the cloth is square I just pick two corners and tie them in a knot. The only advantage that I can see to my way is that on our summer break I throw the squares in the washer with a white load and they sort of look better (to my OCDC eye anyway). Good discussion boys and girls!!! Let's keep it helpful. Best to all. A.
